BRHS Students, Parents, and Faculty:

Th anks to everyone for a great start to the school year. As we look for ways to make it better, we welcome your constructive feedback.

September is busy with the start of school, back to school nights in our cluster, SOL testing, setting directions in our classrooms and school, as well as getting to know those who are new.

One major area of focus this year will be in how we design our instruction to have our students ‘own’ more of the individual and collective learning. We will do this through our One to the World activities, as well as look for ways in our daily classroom instruction. When students have more ownership in their learning, they engage more.

In the coming weeks please look for information on school pictures, PSAT (October 19), and homecoming. Always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. Dave SpagePrincipal, [email protected]

On August 24, the Administrative Staff hosted a Rising 9th Grade & New Student Welcome Night for parents to learn about the nuts and bolts of Broad Run High School, including the importance of communication and collaboration with teachers and school staff to ensure that each student has a successful year. A Rising 9th & New Student Orientation was held on August 25 for students to get their schedules, take a tour of the building and meet their teachers. WHAT DOES A SCHOOL COUNSELOR DO? School counselors are licensed professionals who are qualified to address all students’ academic, career and social/emotional development needs. Here’s more about our role and how can we help your student: https://www.schoolcounselor.org/asca/media/asca/home/RoleStatement.pdf

ACADEMICS: PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) The PSAT will be given to all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students on Wednesday, October 19 from 9 am -12 pm. No registration necessary. LCPS pays for students to take the test. Students will test in their homeroom and will receive an Official Guide to the PSAT prior to the test. The guide has information about test-taking strategies and a practice test is included. This is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT. For more information, please visit: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html. Governor’s School An interest meeting was held for sophomores and juniors interested in learning about Governor’s School for Academics and the Visual and Performing Arts on September 12. An interest meeting for parents will be held at Stone Bridge High School on September 14 at 7 pm. Applications will be due the first week of December. See Mrs. Pasek in the School Counseling Office with questions or for more information. Sigma Tau Sigma Freshmen Mentoring Program

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, all Freshmen participated in the second annual Freshmen Pep Rally. Th is special event was led by our freshmen mentoring program, Sigma Tau Sigma. Th e program promotes a school culture of belonging and connectedness. All freshmen are assigned a careful-ly selected junior or senior to mentor them throughout their freshmen year. Th ese connections cover a range of topics from helping freshmen get organized to helping ninth graders navigate social media. A dynamic team from CORE TRAININGS meets with our mentors monthly to conduct trainings. Th ese trainings involve enhancing life skills such as empathy, service and collaboration. Faculty members involved see fi rsthand the diff erence one student can make in the life of another student. We are so very grateful to Mr. Spage and the administration for their enthusiastic support of this program that impacts so many SPARTANS!

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Loudoun County School District is committed to providing a quality Physical Education program that builds knowledge, fitness, movement skills, social well-being and confidence, so that all students can enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle. Understanding how fitness affects general long-term health and performance will empower students to make informed decisions about their lives.

As part of this curriculum, students will receive developmentally appropriate instruction in topics such as: development of motor and movement skills, the components of fitness, goal setting, nutrition, physical activity strategies, and personal-social development. In physical education your child will also participate in fitness measurements to evaluate their current fitness levels in the following four components of fitness:

• Cardiorespiratory endurance will be assessed by the PACER • Muscular strength and muscular endurance will be assessed by the curl-up & push-up tests • Flexibility will be assessed by the back saver sit & reach test

Your child’s fitness levels are compared to the minimum health-related standards that have been developed for children of the same age and sex. National standards and protocols for the above fitness measurements are derived from the Cooper Institute’s set of assessment procedures, scoring guidelines and defined healthy fitness zone standards. Fitness measurements will consist of 3 phases: pre-measurements, goal setting, and post measurements.

This systematic approach to the development of fitness begins to build a value of how to maintain or improve individual fitness. WELNET® will simplify the process of gathering student fitness data while providing historical data to demonstrate change and progress. Your child will have the ability to access his/her own personal WELNET® Fitness Profile, fitness scores and history from any internet-enabled device at school or off campus. As a parent/guardian, you will be able to track your child’s fitness scores and progress through system-generated reports to be able to discuss your child’s progress in meeting health standards together.

To access your child’s WELNET® information, please go to www.focusedfitness.org and enter in your child’s student ID for username and then the password is their last name. Students can change their passwords once they have logged in. Your log-in information will be the same as your child’s.

If you have any questions about our fitness testing procedures or the WELNET® system, please contact your child’s respective Health & Physical Education teacher at 571-252-2300 or via email at: [email protected],[email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]@lcps.org .
