Breakfast Program at SSES
Big Brothers Big Sisters In-School Mentoring
Program
SSES Community Schools
The Canadian Food
Guide recommends
that children have 5
servings of fruits or
vegetables each day.
During the month of
December our break-
fast volunteers will be
offering bananas and
clementines in addition
to cereal, milk and juice that are available
daily. The Breakfast program runs
smoothly due to the
dedication of volunteers
from the following busi-
nesses: Ganongs, Kents,
Scotiabank, Atlantic Su-
perstore and RBC Royal
Bank. Working in coop-
eration with business
volunteers we have the
following Parent/Grand-
Parent volunteers: Tricia Acheson,
Jeannine Fowler and Amanda Williams.

In-School Mentoring in-
volves spending one hour
a week with one child,
doing non-academic ac-
tivities in the child’s
school. It’s about being
someone a child can talk
to and learn from– sharing
interest with them, en-
couraging them, building
on their strengths, all of
which can lead to im-
proved self-esteem and
a more positive outlook
on their life.
This program has been
so successful, now in its
fifth year, we are in need
of new mentors as we
have had so many
matches move on to mid-
dle school!
Thank you to the following
for taking the time to
make a difference in the
life of a child:

Every Class and POD had a visit
for Career Week, November 5 to
November 9. We were very for-
tunate to have local profession-

persons provide career presenta-
tions to classes. A wide range of
occupations were covered and a
big thank you goes out to those
who volunteered their time to
give a glimpse into their careers:

Have you been using your WITS?
The Scholastic Book Fair at SSES
was held from November 28-
December 3. It is like having a book
store dropped into your library for a
few days. The book fair’s success
relies heavily on the support of vol-
unteers. Through the assistance of
12 volunteers we have sold over
$4500 (our goal was $2000). SSES
will receive a percentage of the sales
to purchase materials for the library.
A huge thank you goes out to:

The Wits program brings together
schools, families and communities to
create a responsive environment
that helps children deal with bullying
and peer victimization. The WITS
program kick off assemblies were
on October 29th. The community
leaders have been assigned to class-
rooms and have now started their
monthly visits to drop in on classes
to see if students have been using
their ―WITS‖. We want to express
our appreciation to the community
leaders that believe in the WITS
message and are willing to help
SSES deliver the program to our 420
students: Dot Larsen- SSES Cross-

dance club, martial arts club,
guitar club, glee club, craft club,
yoga club, zumba club, knitting
club, photography club…. The
possibilities are endless. We just
need the volunteers to enable us
to provide these additional op-
portunities for our students.
We are very for-
tunate at SSES to
have 21 noon-
time clubs run-
ning for the
month s of No-
vember and De-
cember. This is
made possible
through the in-
volvement of 6
community volunteers, 12 staff
volunteers and 26 student lead-
ers. The recess clubs provide
the opportunity for students to
socialize in a supervised activity
with students who share similar
interests.
We will be
starting a
new batch of
six week
noon-time
clubs after
Christmas.
We are look-
ing for vol-
unteers that
have an hour
to share to lead these clubs. You
may have a skill or interest area
you would like to share. For ex-
ample we are looking for volun-
teers for: cooking club, Lego
builders club, sewing club, wash-
ers club, woodworking club,
