Hello Brothers and Sisters
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bob Perkins, Jordan Blue, Stephen Coxe,
Dave Dykstra, Charles Myers, and Rick Chumbley for all their hard work on wiring a Habi-
tat for Humanity house a few weekends ago. A huge thanks go out to Andrew Dessauer for
heading up and running the whole job. Great job guys you made the local look like the great
bunch of electricians that we are. On September 6th @ 8am Andrew will need help to trim
out, anyone that can help contact the hall and get on the volunteer list. The local will be
needing a lot of volunteers for the building of the Jolly Holiday lighting display at Water
Works Park, the Annual Christmas party and the tear down of the lights in January.
I can’t stress enough how important it is for you as a Union member to get out and vote
in this November’s election. Educate yourself about the issues that affect you the most and
I think you will see that there’s only one choice for Governor and that’s Jack Hatch and for
United States Senate Bruce Braley. There are numerous other elections in State, County
and City Government on the ballot. Trust me they have a huge effect on our pocket book
and you need to make sure that you support the people that support unions.
Attendance was down a little at last month’s union meeting. There where 63 people at
the meeting, not too bad for an August meeting, but I think we can do better. What do you
say, shall we pack the house again in September? Remember that until it gets cold we will
be cooking on the grill for every meeting and it is always good to talk to brothers and sisters
once the meeting is over and enjoy some good food along with a nice cold drink. Mark
your calendar now for September 11 @ 5pm sharp! Hope to see you there.
Pat Wells and I recently had to go to CIR (for those of you that didn’t know that’s the
Council On Industrial Relations, where we go to resolve disputes that can’t for whatever
reason be resolved locally) and I’m happy to report that they agreed with us. The contrac-
tors have to pay 1% of their gross payroll on all electricians whether they are a JW,CW or
an apprentice. The Council also said that it will be up to the Des Moines JATC to decide
what training is appropriate for the CW’s. Beginning January 1st 2015, the Des Moines
JATC will be receiving a little more money to reach their goals.
The work picture in our area remains very strong. The hydroelectric dam at Red Rock
just hired some guys, DM5 is well underway and we have about 20 guys already working
and the second building at Facebook is well underway. Our local contractors seem to be
getting real busy as well with some of their calls going un-answered. I think it’s important
that we take care of our regular customers. We don’t want to lose their business.
In Solidarity

Hello Brothers & Sisters,
By the time you receive this newsletter we will have approximately 65 days until Election Day. Granted a
lot of people consider this an off year because it isn’t a Presidential race, but as Iowans this election cycle is very
important to us as working union families. We have a great opportunity to take back the House of Representatives
and keep the Iowa Senate in our favor.
As you know we have some of the nations most heated races 2 of the biggest are Bruce Braley against
Joni Ernst & Staci Appel against the magician David Young. As far as the US Senate race you can believe what
you hear about Joni Ernst. I wish I had the time & space to fill you in on Joni’s voting record. If you have the time
I encourage everyone to look up her voting record, it would make you sick. She wants us to believe she has Iowa
in her best interests (Google: Project vote smart). Then we have our 3rd Congressional race Staci against Dave
Young. In the past few months you’ve heard me speak very highly about Staci, in my mind we could not ask for a
better congressional Representative than Staci. I could certainly go on for paragraphs about how bad David Young
is for working families and union projects but the proof is in the pudding. Wait and watch to see what comes out
in the news in the following weeks.
Here are some of the important races that will affect us as union members and our communities that we
live in.
Dan Mulbauer –HD 12 Carrol Counties
Scott Ourth -HD 26 Warren Counties
Joe Riding -HD 30 Altoona
Ben Westphal -HD 72 Tama Counties
Tom Leffler -HD39 Grimes & Johnston
Hans Erickson -HD 47 Green Counties
Kim Robinson -HD 43 Clive
Matt McCoy -IA Senate 21 Polk County
Daryll Beall -IA Senate 5 Webster County
Amanda Ragan -IA Senate 27 Wright County
Chaz Allen -IA Senate 15 Jasper County
Tom Hockensmith -Polk County Supervisor
Angela Connly -Polk County Supervisor
John Mauro -Polk County Supervisor
Bard Anderson -Secretary of State
Steve Roe -HD 20
Jon Neiderbauch -State Auditor
Mike Fitzgerald -State Auditor
Tom Miller -Attorney General
These candidates are on our side, they will fight and they believe in working families. A lot of them have
been in the union or their family members are union. Pat and I have sat and chatted with several of them to make
sure they stand with the IBEW & express our concerns with the communities. I am continuing my interviews to
assure our members that our endorsed candidates stand and will fight for our beliefs.
In closing we as Local Union #347 have a big day coming up on September 13, 2014. We will be can-
vassing for Bruce Braley and Jack Hatch. It is very important that we have a good showing to support our candi-
dates and show them that the IBEW stands behind them strongly. Please come out and show your support for your
union. Another big date to keep in mind is September 27th the Labor Jam at Labor Park. Please come out and sup-
port this event and our park.
If anyone has any questions about any events please feel free to contact me at the union hall.
Thank you
Your Brother Matt Marchese

August has been a busy month here at the Des Moines Electrical Apprenticeship. The First Years Apprentices have started their Boot Camps which include OSHA, CPR and First Aid. All other apprentices are renewing their CPR and or First Aid certifications. If you are working with any of these new indentured apprentices be sure to congratulate them. Sep-tember marks the start of another school year for all of the apprentices. Just a reminder for all apprentices that when you come to school be sure that you bring hand tools, safety glasses and proper attire for doing labs. Journeyman training classes will be coming soon so check our web site for more information.
