Storing your rain barrel for the winter
Rain barrels are popular methods of gathering rain water, which can then be used in various ways. Rain barrels are typically attached to a home’s gutters and downspouts to collect water as it flows off of the roof. The collected water can be used for gardening, washing cars and watering the lawn. Some water collection systems can be used for drinking water, but such products require special ized fi l t rat ion and sanitizing systems. While rain barrels can be effective in various climates, to prevent damage, water barrels may need to be stored in regions where freezing temperatures are common in the wintertime. When storing your rain barrel for the winter, consider the following tips.
* It is best to disconnect the downspout from the rain barrel and reattach the gutter extension to funnel water away from the foundation of the house.
* Make sure the rain barrel is empty. Frozen water expands as it forms into ice, and it can crack the rain barrel.
* Flip the rain barrel over so that it will not collect any rain or snow and store it in an out-of-the-way area outside. If you have enough room, you may want to store the barrel indoors in a garage, basement or storage shed.
* Take in any hoses so they do not freeze and crack from the cold weather.
Common concrete problems avoided with proper installation
Concrete is a popular structural material among homeowners. One of the more affordable options for patios and other structures, concrete also can be durable and a t t rac t ive . However, because no material is impervious to damage, concrete will need to be maintained, and certain problems can arise when concrete is not properly installed.
Though an excellent material, concrete is not perfect. Even under ideal conditions, concrete can crack and breakage can occur. Here are some of the common complaints regarding concrete.
* Scaling and spalling: Scaling and spalling is the crumbling effect of concrete. Very often this occurs from changes in climate, particularly freezing and thawing that causes structures to expand and contract. In areas where freezing and thawing conditions exist, masons should not overwork the concrete in an effort to keep an abundance of air in the mixture. Entrapped air will help buffer the freeze/thaw conditions. Use of chemical fertilizers in and around concrete can also lead to scaling. Chemicals can break down the surface of the concrete. This is a particular problem when using rock salt and de-icing products during the winter. Over time, something as simple as table salt can etch concrete or cause spalling. The National Research C o u n c i l ’s S t r a t e g i c H i g h w a y R e s e a r c h Program has found that
magnesium chloride salt blends produce the least amount of damage on concrete surfaces.
* Discoloration: Concrete should have a uniform color if the same mix is used. But discoloration can occur if water is added at the job site, the concrete is of varying thickness or if the material does not cure uniformly. Color issues can also occur if hard troweling is used on the exterior concrete.
* Crazing: This is a phenomenon when the concrete shows several LQWHUFRQQHFWHG¿QHFUDFNVCracks will appear when the concrete is damp. Usually this occurs when cement paste comes up to the surface and then shrinks. To avoid this,
masons should be careful QRWWR¿QLVKFRQFUHWHXQWLOall water has evaporated and not sprinkle water onto the concrete while ¿QLVKLQJLW8VLQJDEURRP¿QLVKDOVRFDQKHOS
* Cracking: It can be disheartening to have a pristine concrete surface only to see cracks begin to form. Sometimes even with the best application, concrete can crack from subgrade settlement or shrinkage during drying and curing times. Utilizing ÀH[LEOHFRQFUHWH MRLQWV WRhelp with the expansion and contraction of the concrete can help. Also, including a low-shrinkage aggregate in the mix may alleviate major cracks.
* Staining: Staining does not result from concrete
installation or finishing. Staining occurs after the fact, when liquids or other materials discolor the concrete. This can happen when fluids from a car in a driveway stain the concrete. Leaves and plant matter left on the surface of the concrete may also cause staining. The best way to alleviate stains is to prevent them in the ¿UVWSODFH$OZD\VVZHHSor blow away debris. Maintain vehicles so they
don’t leak fluid. Power washers can remove some stains, but it’s still best to prevent them in the first place.
Problems can arise when building with concrete, but finding an installer who understands the nature of concrete can reduce the risk of those problems presenting themselves.

GOOD NEWS For Seniors!
Cook ahead of the holidays to save time
Hol iday hos t s and
hostesses may want to put
a storage freezer on their
wish list this year. Having
the ability to prepare
meals in advance and store
them easily for later use
could prove invaluable --
especially for those who
are opening their homes
for the holidays.
Food and celebrations
a r e u n e q u i v o c a l l y
i n t e r t w i n e d . W h i l e
presents and decorations
may be important parts of
holiday festivities, food
is just as important for
hosts who want to throw
a successful holiday party.
Those who are welcoming
guests to their homes
for the holidays may fret
over what to serve and
how long preparation
will take, especially when
they’re busy with other
tasks. However, stretching
out food shopping,
preparation and cooking
over a few weeks can
make the process much
more manageable.
A freezer can be a party
host’s best friend come
the holiday season. Many
foods can be prepared in
advance and then frozen
until the celebration. Also,
having small portions of
pre-made foods can be
helpful when visitors pop
in unexpectedly and may
be hungry for a meal. Just
take something out of the
freezer and heat it.
Certain tips can ensure
foods made in advance are
stored properly and heat
up quickly.
* Casseroles, baked pasta
dishes and vegetables can
be prepared in advance
and frozen. Be sure to
consult with any recipes
to see if items can indeed
be frozen if you are unsure
how they will fare in the
freezer.
* Instead of preparing food
and storing it in one large
container, separate it into
two smaller containers so
dishes defrost quickly and
dinner time isn’t delayed.
* U s e p a c k a g i n g
specifically designed for
use in the freezer. These
products will offer extra
insulation against freezer
burn, which dehydrates
food. Keeping air out of
the packaging will help to
alleviate cases of freezer
burn and potential waste
of good food.
* Mark packages with
the date the foods were
packaged as well as what
is inside. This makes it
easy to keep inventory of
what is in the freezer.
* Defrost foods in the
refrigerator the night
before the holiday meal
will be served. Heating
foods that aren’t still
frozen considerably cuts
down on cook times.
* If food cannot be
defrosted before cooking,
keep in mind that you
may have to cook foods
longer than normal.
* Many desserts also
can be frozen. Freeze
pies before they are
cooked. Cakes can be
frozen if you freeze the
layers separately. Then
assemble and frost the
cakes before serving.
Cream pies cannot be
frozen, but you can use
pudding in place of
cream in many recipes
and be able to freeze
them. Brownies and
other “bar” recipes will
freeze and carry well.
* If you don’t want to
have everything prepped
in advance and enjoy the
taste of a freshly cooked
meal, consider preparing
side dishes in advance
and then leave the roast
or turkey to cook. Any
steps you can take ahead
of time will dramatically
cut out the time you have
to spend in the kitchen
while guests are around.
* Don’t feel shy about
cutting corners when
poss ib le . I f you’re
cooking the entire meal,
invest in pre-made frozen
appetizers to save time.

Make household drafts a thing of the past
(MS) -- Outside is below freezing and the heater is working overtime, but throughout the house there are cold, drafty areas. Does this sound familiar?
Specialists in the field say that any cold or drafty areas within a home are typically caused by air leaks within the building envelope. Air leaks can make rooms uncomfortable and allow the air to escape, forcing heating equipment to work continually to compensate.
Whether building a new home or renovating, it may be worthwhile to consider a complete solution that makes household drafts a thing of the past. A modern insulation material, like that offered by innovators Icynene, can both insulate and air seal in one step.
Spray foam insulation seals the entire building envelope and provides a cost-saving option for homeowners looking to reduce energy waste and save on their monthly energy bills. Over the long-term, the savings quickly add up.
Modifications to the way you manage your home’s energy consumption leads to significant financial rewards and reassurance. Consulting a professional, such as an energy rater or inspector, will help make an educated assessment to the actual requirements within the home and where the value lies. More information can be found at www.icynene.com.
Get the facts about mold and your health
Mold can grow in many areas of a home. Though not always dangerous, mold can, in certain instances, cause serious illness.
Experts estimate that there are tens of thousands of different types of mold in the world. A type of fungi, molds are single-celled or multicellular organisms without chlorophyll that reproduce by spores and live by absorbing nutrients from organic matter. )XQJLFDQEHFODVVL¿HGDVmolds, mushrooms, rusts, mildews and yeasts. Some of the common types of molds found indoors include cladosporium, alternaria, penicillium, and aspergillus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that molds can be a health hazard to some people. Some individuals are more sensitive to molds than others, and may experience anything from a mild allergic reaction to severe symptoms, such as trouble breathing or other complications with their lungs.
Mold spores travel very easily through the air and can also travel on people and pets. Coming in contact with mold in one location and then traveling to another can cause spores that hitched a ride to dislodge in the new area. People who may have never had mold problems at home before FDQ¿QGWKDWPROGTXLFNO\takes root if mold spores have been accidentally brought into a home.
In addition to moist areas, molds flourish in other conditions as well.
* Food source: Molds are not picky eaters and can feed on various materials, including wood, fabric, wallpaper, and drywall.
* Air: Although mold needs oxygen to grow, mold fares best in areas that are poorly ventilated.
* Warmth: Mold can grow in temperatures between 40 and 110 F. Therefore, unless it’s below freezing outdoors, there’s a good chance mold spores are thriving.
Mold’s versatility to live in a variety of areas and feed on just about anything make it a formidable foe. But there are natural ways to tackle it.
Mold thrives in moist conditions, so removing the source of moisture is the primary way to control mold growth. ,QYHVWLQDGHKXPLGL¿HULIyour home is plagued by moisture. Dehumidifiers are especially useful in basements and crawlspaces where moisture tends to be a problem.
It’s also good to avoid using bleach to address a mold problem. Although bleach is an excellent disinfectant, it is not always successful in killing mold spores. The most it may do is whiten areas where the mold is growing. Plus, bleach has its own strong aroma and can be noxious to breathe in at high doses.
Instead of bleach, consider all-natural methods of controlling mold. Straight vinegar reportedly kills 82 percent of mold. Using it in a spray bottle on mold can help to kill it and keep it at bay. Tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract are also very effective at eliminating mold. Unlike
other methods of mold removal, grapefruit seed extract does not have an odor.
Keeping a home ventilated is another way to fight mold. Mold prefers s o m e w h a t s t a g n a n t conditions, so allowing fresh air into the house can
make it harder for mold to thrive. In bathrooms and kitchens, use exhaust fans or open windows to reduce the humidity and moisture left behind.
Mold can be an irritant to people who are sensitive to the spores, but in many cases, mold is more
of an eyesore and a nuisance than something a homeowner needs to worry about. Using some smart strategies to reduce its growth can keep mold under control.

Tips for unclogging drains
Clogged drains can be a nuisance. And if left untreated, that minor nuisance can turn into an expensive repair.
A number of different things can cause drains to clog. Food particles, hair, grease, soap residue, oil, and even a foreign object lodged in the drain can each cause a drain to clog. Before you have to call a plumber, there are steps to take that may get water flowing once more.
Bubbles GaloreBaking soda has many uses in the home. This versatile product can be used dislodge items in drains. It is better to try baking soda when clogs are minor and water drainage is sluggish rather than waiting for the clog to get so bad that water is impenetrable.
When baking soda and common household vinegar are mixed together, they form a new chemical called carbonic acid. This acid immediately begins to degrade into carbon dioxide gas, which produces foam and bubbles in the process. This bubbling action can upset the source of a clog in a pipe and dislodge particles that may be causing the water backup. Keep your face away from the drain as the smell of vinegar mixing with the baking soda may be unpleasant.
Baking soda also can be mixed with salt and boiling water to break down grease that may be clogging drains. Repeatedly washing this mixture down drains can gently scour pipes and keep water moving steadily.
Plunge aheadIf a clog is especially stubborn, you may need to use a plunger. A plunger works by forcing the energy you push on the plunger into the surrounding water, which then applies pressure against the clog. Repeatedly forcing water against a clog can move it along until it frees up the drain. Plunging can be messy, so wear old
clothes when plunging. Make sure the head of the plunger is filled with water; otherwise, your work will be for naught. You may want to keep a separate plunger handy for sink work so you are not transferring bacteria and waste from a toilet plunger into the sink, especially in the kitchen.
Pop and fizzColas are loaded with phosphoric acid, which is more acidic than lemon juice and is also corrosive. This acid will fizz in the drain and break through any greasy, stubborn residue. It’s even effective at d issolving ca lc ium deposits, which may be a byproduct of hard water.
Snake itSome clogs are more stubborn and require some extra elbow grease to fix. A pipe snake can push hair and other debris through the pipes until water can run free. They also can be used to pull the obstacle back up out of the drain. While there are snakes of various lengths, sometimes a small one that makes it just to the bend of the elbow trap can be sufficient. A snake is essentially a flexible piece of wire that is inserted in the pipe. It may have a coarse or wound end to ensnare a clog.
Call a plumberU n l e s s y o u f e e l confident taking pipes apart to check for and clear out clogs and then reassembling everything, you may need to call a plumber if the clog will not relent. It may be lower in the system than at house level, especially if there are clogs in multiple sinks or appliances in the home. Multiple clogged drains may be indicative of a more serious problem.
Many clogs can be alleviated with simple household items. Serious clogs may require the expertise of a plumber.
