“I am the Bread of life

whoever comes to me shall never be hungry, whoever

believes in me will

never thirst.”

Our St. Paul Parish and School Capital Campaign continues with pledges coming in from many parishioners. We are grateful to all who have been able to make a pledge. We are also

grateful to those who have considered the Campaign but prayerfully decided their personal financial situation does not allow them to make a pledge at this time. We count on their prayers and hope in future years

they may be able to help.

Any questions about the Campaign can be directed to our Pastor, Fr. Larry

Dorsch (304-748-6710).

Fr. Larry will be meeting on Monday wilh the Diocesan Development

Director and the Building and Property Director to see where we go from

here. We have not quite met the goal for phase one and we have not

received many gifts or pledges from parents of school children nor from

local businesses. Also school is set to reopen on August 17. Work has

begun on the kitchen but will likely not be completed by school reopening and may require students to bring bagged lunches for a few weeks. Work on the heating and cooling

system, while urgently needed, has not begun; this will be the major topic of conversation at Monday’s meeting.

Annual St. Paul Parish Picnic August 23—11 am

As always we begin with our outdoor Sunday Mass, followed by dinner, socializing with fellow parishioners, games, wonderful desserts and music! Mark your calendar and plan to be part of our parish summer celebration!

This week: The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15 Ephesians 4:17,20-24; John 6:24-35

Background: What are your memories, reflections, associations, emotions associated with

bread? Do you remember a family member or neighbor who baked a wonder kind of bread—do you remember the smell in the house or neighborhood? Do you remember a certain crunch to the

crust or feel of the melted butter? When Jesus declares himself to be the Bread of Life, what does that conjure up inside of you? Does Christ fulfill any hunger in

your life? Can you name that hunger? When do you feel that hunger most? He said if we come to him we will never be hungry

again: is that true for you? Have you never been hungry since you have come to him? His claim is boldly sweeping and expansive:

what does he mean.

Next Week: I Kings 19:4-8 Ephesians 4:30-5:2 John 6:41-51

VOCATION DISCERNMENT DINNERVOCATION DISCERNMENT DINNER

Local priests of Brooke, Hancock, Ohio, and Marshall Counties, and participants will gather for an evening of prayer, fellowship and discus-sion. The schedule is as follows: 6:00 p.m. we gather for Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, at 6:30 p.m. We will have dinner, at 7:00 p.m. The priests will discuss individual stories on how they discerned their vocations followed by a question and answer session with the evening concluding at 8:00 p.m. Parents are welcome to join for the beginning evening prayer and for dinner. There will be a separate discussion for parents on “How to Help My Child Make Good Vocational Choices.” For more information please contact the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston Office of Vocations and ask for Mr. Rick Teachout, Assistant Vocation Direc-tor, (304) 233-0880 ext. 442, [email protected].

Thoughts on the Gospel: “Just as many were attracted to Jesus in the synoptic Gospels because of the wonders he worked, so many in the Johannine community refused to look beyond the sign of the bread to the one who gave it. This fascination with signs and wonders precluded their full appreciation of what Jesus was revealing to them. No longer would they be fed by manna and quail or even by the plentiful barley loaves and fish. Rather, Jesus was offering, as food, the gift of himself, his teaching, his very body and blood given up in sacrifice for sin. Through the ages, faith in Jesus’ unique gift of himself continues to challenge believers.” Patricia Datchuck Sánchez Aug. 5, 2012, National Catholic Reporter
