QUOTE OF THE

DAYGujarat to connect 26 APMCs under e-market program

Come November, a farmer in Ahmedabad would be able to check stocks, buy or sell his farm produce to another sitting at Unjha at the click of a button. If things go according to plan, by November, Gujarat to begin the electronic market (e-market) platform for its Agricultural Produce Market Committees (AP-MCs) under the online National Agriculture Mar-ket (NAM) initiative. Initially 26 out of a total 210 APMCs will be connected on the e-market platform while the rest will be implemented in a phased man-ner. The 26 APMCs include those from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Himmatnagar, Unjha, Surat, Da-hod and Gondal, among others. “In the first phase we will connect 26 APMCs in Gujarat on e-mar-ket platform. The total project cost is about Rs 21 crore and we have submitted our proposal to central government to get financial assistant,” said Mona Khandhar, secretary, agriculture and cooperation de-partment, Gujarat. Gujarat government is planning to develop two type of markets under e-market plat-form, one is local real time market and second is virtual market. Khandhar said, “The local real time market will see trading of smaller lots by local trad-ers on the e-platform wherein traders will have some time to study before bidding. On the contrary, virtual market will allow all traders who have valid license from anywhere to trade in larger lots. Laboratory re-sults can also be shared on the lots during trading (which will give idea on quality of goods offered for trading).” Currently traders can participates only in single APMC for physical trading but in e-market, traders can participate in multiple APMCs with sin-gle license. The idea is that a farmer should be able to get the best price for its produce offered within the state which as now not possible due to limited area covered under each APMC. On its part, the Centre is willing to provide all kinds of financial support to ensure APMCs join a single platform for better realisations for farmers, “Our aim is to put all the AP-MCs in one platform so that farmers can get better price for their products. Union government will pro-vide all kind of financial support to develop e-market platform,” said Mohanbhai Kundariya, minister of state for agriculture, Government of India. Govern-ment is aiming to put up at least 100 APMCs on the e-market platform by end of March 2016. For this, the Union Government has allotted a total of Rs 200 crore for the National Common Electronic Market, a project being implemented through the Small Farm-ers’ Agri-Business Consortium SFAC).

Taxi aggregator Ola is in talks with investors to raise over USD 500 million (about Rs. 3,320 crore) to drive growth across smaller cities and compete head-on with rivals like U.S.-based Uber and home-grown Meru. In April this year, Ola had raised USD 400 million (about Rs. 2,500 crore) from a clutch of investors led by DST Global. According to sources, the Bengaluru-based firm is looking at raising upwards of USD 500 million in a series F round, which will value Ola at about USD 5 billion. An announcement is expected re-garding this in the next few weeks. When contact-ed, an Ola spokesperson said the company does not comment on market speculations. The Moto X name has been associated with Mo-torola’s flagship smartphones ever since the origi-nal X was launched over two years ago. The Moto X was a good phone that was let down by its poor camera and battery life, though its successor fixed the battery problem to a large extent. 2015 rep-resents a dilution of the Moto X brand, first with the launch of the ‘super flagship’ Moto Turbo, and more recently, the unveiling of not one, but two new Moto X smartphones - the Moto X Play and the Moto X Style. The latter is closer to Moto X’s flagship ethos, while the Play is a mid-range of-fering by today’s standards. So how does Moto X Play perform in the real world? Let’s find out. The Moto X Play is another solid, good looking phone from the Motorola’s stables. The phone is pretty traditional in its design and layout, apart from the SIM-plus-microSD tray that sits on the top edge. The tray pops out to reveal two Nano SIM slots on one side and space for a microSD card on the other. We quite liked this idea, but if you are some-one who likes to pop microSD cards in and out fre-quently, you may be perturbed by the fact you will lose cellular coverage every time you do that.

Star batsman Suresh Raina will look to get some batting practice ahead of the upcoming South Africa series along with some of the other fringe players as India A take on full-strength Bangladesh A in a three-match One Day series, starting on Wednesday.

Some of the other play-ers, who will be aiming to impress the selectors are Karun Nair, Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey, Dhawal Kulkarni and Karn Sharma to name a few. Jadhav and Pandey had in fact played well in India’s last limited overs series in Zimbabwe and are in the 30-member probables lost announced

With all the senior players set to be available provided they are injury free, at the most couple of slots will be up for grabs, when Sandeep Patil led selection committee sit down to pick squads for the three T20 Internation-als and five ODIs against the Proteas starting next month.

Legendary former West Indies batsman Brian Lara has thrown his full backing behind newly appointed Test skipper Jason Holder. Lara, him-self a former captain, said here on Monday the way Holder handled the ODI captaincy during this year’s World Cup proved that he possessed the mettle to deal with the challenges of the Test captaincy, reports CMC. “I think it’s an excellent choice. I saw the young man while working during the World Cup in Australia,” Lara said. “And the pressure that he came under, personal-ly with his bowling and even as a captain, and the

Roelant Oltmans is taking every care to avoid ‘con-flict of interest’ as India’s hockey coach leading up to the Rio Olympics Games next year, and that is the reason behind him turning down the offer to coach UP Wizards in the Hockey India League (HIL) in the coming sea-son. Oltmans has been handed over the senior men’s team’s reins after Hockey India’s fallout with Paul van Ass that

led to his unceremonious ouster. The High Per-formance Director will now double up the team’s chief coach until the Rio Games. And the Dutch-man wants to take every care so as nobody can ac-cuse him of “favouritism” or bias. “I have said no to the coaching offer from UP Wizards so as to avoid possible conflict of inter-est. This I have done be-cause of two simple rea-sons. Let’s say if a player selected in the Olympics core probables list be-

longs to UP Wizards, then the other players or hock-ey fans might just accuse me of favouritism,” he.“It might attract criticism that I am selecting play-ers from the franchise which I have been asso-ciated with. Even if the players from UP Wizards are genuinely good,” Olt-mans said on the sidelines of a training session at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Del-hi,” he said. Oltmans was coach of the UP team last HIL season.

Indian tennis player Ro-han Bopanna said it is up to Sania Mirza to decide whether she wants to part-ner him or Leander Paes in mixed doubles at next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Sania partnered Paes at the 2012 London Games where the pair lost in the quarter-finals of the event. “In mixed doubles, it is up to Sania to take that decision. She is No.1 in the world, she is out there playing the best ten-nis of her life. So she has

to make that call on who she wants to play with or who she is comfort-able with,” Bopanna said at the Delhi Lawn Ten-nis Association (DLTA) Complex here on Tues-day. “Obviously, I want to play with Sania, Leander wants to play with Sania, so it depends on who she wants to play with, that is the bottomline.” When it comes to men’s doubles, it is likely Paes will part-ner Bopanna for the best chance of bringing back a medal from the discipline

as Mahesh Bhupathi is currently not playing on the circuit and is con-centrating on his venture -- International Premier Tennis League (IPTL). “Of course, if you take Rio, apart from Leander and me there is no one else playing doubles. If I am not mistaken, to qual-ify for the Olympics you have to be a combined 60 or 65 (in the rankings). So there is no other player in that category,” added Bopanna, who is ranked World No.13.

needs a rocket… I hope you understand what I am saying. I (Ishant) think he lacked a bit of discipline. Eight years ago I thought he will be a world beater, but he lost the plot some-where.” Referring to In-dia’s last tour of Australia, Thomson picked a loss in concentration as one of the key reasons for the mis-takes of the bowlers.

executive committee in the board, had last week signed on former Pakistan greats Wasim Akram and Rameez Raja as brand ambassadors for the T20 league which is being hyped up by the PCB. Gayle, a specialist T20 player has featured in all the foreign T20 leagues in the cricket including

the Bangladesh Premier League and is a regular crowd puller in the Indi-an Premier League. Ac-cording to Sethi, nearly 80 foreign players have signed consent forms to take part in the PSL and the process of short-list-ing the best available 20 to 25 players would be completed soon.

way he handled it. He’s very eloquent and big in stature and he reminds me of another version of a Clive Lloyd.” Holder’s elevation, first as ODI captain last December and more recently in the Test format, has drawn criticism in some quar-ters because of his rel-ative inexperience. The Barbadian seamer is the second youngest ever Windies Test captain at

23 and has played just eight Tests and 33 One-Day Internationals. He replaced the more expe-rienced Denesh Ramdin who was sacked after just 15 months in charge. However, Lara, who led West Indies in 47 of his 131 Tests, said once Holder received the nec-essary support from the team and the West Indies Cricket Board, he could succeed.

For example, the lady-finger which costs Rs 20 per kg in Jamalpur mar-ket is being sold at Rs 30 a kg outside the market. By the time this vegetable reaches the consumer in Satellite or Vastrapur, its rates go up threefold.

BEHIND THE rapid turn of events through Satur-day night and Sunday, when Patidar agitation leader Hardik Patel decid-ed to put off the “reverse Dandi march” and hold talks with the Gujarat government Monday, is said to be IGP N D Solan-ki and Dinesh Navadiya, president of Surat Dia-mond Association, who decided to bring the Pa-tidar leaders to the table. Solanki, currently posted with CID (Intelligence) in Gandhinagar, has done a long stint in Surat. He was seen outside the CM’s of-fice, monitoring the sit-uation Monday. Solanki said: “I am an intelligence officer. I tour everywhere as part of my job.” The countdown to the talks began Saturday night, but not without its share of differences between Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti convener Hardik Patel and his Surat lieu-tenant Alpesh Katheriya.

The ire of the Patel com-munity in Gujarat which has been protesting for reservation is still sim-mering. On Monday eve-ning, Hardik Patel, con-venor of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) who is spearheading the agitation, met state chief minister Anandiben Patel at her residence in Gand-hinagar with a set of de-mands. The meeting was fixed for 4.30pm on Mon-day, but at the eleventh hour, 22-year-old Hardik said that he would be ac-companied by another 144 Patel community mem-bers, putting the meeting on hold. After some con-fusion, the meeting took place around 6.30pm. Hardik and about 15 other members were allowed to attend the meeting along with some ministers and state government officials. In the meeting, he sought action against police offi-cers for using force against

the during a rally at the sprawling Gujarat Miner-al Development Corpora-tion (GMDC) grounds on 25 August and release all arrested. The state gov-ernment has sought 10 days’ time to consider his demands. The 25 August rally attended by about five lakh people witnessed violent incidents when the police briefly detained Pa-tel. Ten people from the community were killed in the incident and army and paramilitary forces had to be deployed to control the

situation. “In our meeting [with the chief minister] we have demanded that all police officials involved in the lathicharge at GMDC Ground be suspended and action be taken against all police officials who were posted at the police sta-tions where as many as 10 people died. We have also demanded that the Pa-tels arrested by the police during our agitation last month be released and that there should be no further arrests,” said Hardik, af-ter a three-hour meeting

with the chief minister. He also demanded that the state should bear the med-ical expense of all those who were injured in the two-day violence. Hardik also announced that on 19 September PAAS will take out a reverse Dandi March, a throwback to Mahatma Gandhi’s iconic protest against the Brit-ish a century ago, from Navsari to Ahmedabad. The march was to be held on 13 August but was put off in view of the meeting with the chief minister.

The other factors that contributed to the deci-sion to put off the “re-verse Dandi march” was the possibility of clashes with other OBC commu-nities like Kolis, who had threatened to counter the rally. Besides, there was an apparent loss of sup-port following differenc-

es within the communi-ty over its people facing another round of police assault, as the rally did not have permission and the administration had decided to bar all internet services. Differences also emerged between Kadva and Leuva Patidars, who had supported the quota

agitation so far. Pressure had started mounting with the police forbid-ding entry of all vehicles beyond Eru Cross Road in Navsari district, from where Dandi is 18 kms away. Katheriya admitted that many Patidars who had earlier offered night halts had backed out.

as there were adverse re-marks against him by the Supreme Court in 2004. The petitioners said that Pandya was public pros-ecutor in the 2002 Best Bakery riots case in which all the 21 accused were acquitted by the trial court and the order was upheld in the Gujarat High Court. “The apex court ordered for a fresh trial in 2004 and trans-ferred the case to Mum-

bai. The court made an adverse remark against Pandya for the manner in which he conducted the trial as public prose-cutor. The court went to say that he should be re-moved. Even after such a strong observation the state government ap-pointed Pandya as public prosecutor for various terms,” said advocate R J Goswami who appeared for Meghwani.

on which the states were assessed in the report, the answer points to one di-rection–how corruption free is the state As the tree cutting example shows no state government (not even AP) will hand over an approval certificate to cut a tree, online. So it is not surprising that none of the states have scored above 75 per cent in their overall score card. For a business person this is a sobering thought. MSME works in collab-oration with the National Institute of Design (NID). It asked Ankit Vyas, an NID alumnus, to support Dashrath in modifying his design. With Ankit’s

help, Dashrath was able to change the materi-al and design and bring down the weight of the sofa to just 35 kgs. The first prototype had been made entirely of wood — even the hosepipe was made of wood, which made the design heavy. In the new design, all the wood parts were replaced with fibre and PVC was used for the pipe.
