Lend Me Your EarsExposure to extremelyhigh noise levels may causepermanent hearing loss. In-dividuals vary considerablyin susceptibility to noise-

induced hearing loss, but nearly everyone willlose some hearing if exposed to sufficiently in-tense noise for a period of time. The U.S.Government’s Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration (OSHA) has specified the per-missible noise level exposures shown in thischart.

According to OSHA, any exposure in excessof these permissible limits could result in somehearing loss. To ensure against potentiallydangerous exposure to high sound-pressurelevels, it is recommended that all personsexposed to equipment capable of producingthese levels use hearing protectors while thisunit is in operation. Ear plugs or protectors inthe ear canals or over the ears must be wornwhen operating this amplification system inorder to prevent a permanent hearing loss ifexposure is in excess of the limits set forth here.

INTRODUCTIONM•1400i and C300s. A Phase switch gives youthe option of reversing the polarity of the signalto the full-range speakers by 180º. A SubwooferLevel control allows you to adjust the balance be-tween the subwoofer and the full-range speakers.

The built-in amplifier produces 600 watts ofcontinuous power. The amplifier module sits ona mammoth heatsink that eliminates the need forfans, dramatically extending life expectancy, andeliminating maintenance cycles. A tremendousbenefit of having the amplifier located within thesubwoofer cabinet is that the SRS1500 functionsas a system, optimizing acoustic, electronic, andmechanical designs to achieve the highest level ofperformance and value.

The cabinet is constructed with 18mm thickmulti-layered birch plywood. Carrying handlesare integrated into each side for easy loadingand transport.

Thank you for choosing Mackie Designs’active sound reinforcement speaker systems.

The SRS1500 is a high output activesubwoofer system. It features a high-precision15˝ transducer combined with applicationspecific amplifier technology. The system iscomposed of a single, compact subwoofer cabinetwith built-in control and amplifier electronics.

Connecting and setting up the SRS1500 is abreeze. It accepts a stereo line-level signal viafemale XLR input jacks. Male XLR Thru jacksare provided for daisy-chaining the signal toadditional SRS1500 cabinets. The built-incrossover separates the low frequencies fromthe high frequencies, and routes the high fre-quencies to the male XLR high-pass outputjacks. Connect these to the inputs of full-rangeactive speakers such as the Mackie DesignsSRM450s, or to an amplifier powering a pair ofpassive speakers such as the Mackie Designs

REAR PANEL DESCRIPTION

POWER SwitchUse this switch to turn the SRS1500 on

and off. Make sure the signal source’s levelcontrol is turned down before you turn it on.

AC ReceptacleThis is where you connect the AC line-

cord to provide AC power to the SRS1500’sbuilt-in power amplifiers. Plug the linecordinto an AC socket properly configured foryour particular model.

PROTECTION IndicatorThe SRS1500 has a built-in limiter and

thermal protection circuit that protects theamplifier and transducer. The PROTECTIONindicator lights when the limiter is activated. If the protection indicator blinks frequentlyor lights continuously, turn down the signalsource’s level control until the protection in-dicator only blinks occasionally.

If the internal temperature should exceeda safe operating level, the signal is mutedto allow the amplifier to cool. When thetemperature cools to a safe level once again, the thermal protection circuit deactivatesand normal operation continues.

Note: Activation of the thermal protec-tion circuit is an indication that you shouldtake steps to avoid continued thermal prob-lems. See “Thermal Considerations” on page 7.

POWER IndicatorWhen the POWER switch is turned on

and the linecord is connected to an activeAC power supply, this indicator lights greento let you know that you’re ready to rockand roll. The cool blue LED on the front ofthe cabinet works in the same way.

FULL RANGE INPUTThese are female XLR-type connectors

that accept a balanced line-level signal froma mixing console or other signal source.

THRU (FULL RANGE OUTPUT)These are male XLR-type connectors

that produce exactly the same signal that isconnected to the FULL RANGE INPUT jack.Use it to daisy-chain several SRS1500s to-gether off the same signal source.

HIGH PASS (MID/HIGH FREQ) OUTPUTThese are male XLR-type connectors

that produce the frequencies above 120Hz.Connect these to a pair of full-range activespeakers or to an amplifer/passive speakercombination. The SRS1500 reproduces thefrequencies below 120Hz.

SUBWOOFER LEVEL ControlThis adjusts the subwoofer level. The

center detent position provides 15 dB ofheadroom with a nominal +4 dBu inputsignal. Use this as a starting point for set-ting the balance between the subwooferand the main speakers.

PHASEThis switch reverses the polarity of the

signal at the HIGH PASS OUTPUT jacks.Depending on the placement of theSRS1500 subwoofer relative to the full-range speakers, you may get a betterlow-frequency response in the room if youreverse the polarity of the signal. Experi-ment with this switch to determine whichposition sounds best.

PLACEMENTThe SRS1500 subwoofer is designed to

sit on the floor or on sturdy stands.A socket is provided on the top of the

SRS1500 for mounting the MackieSRM450 active speaker. Use the optionalMackie speaker mounting pole to mountthe SRM450 on the SRS1500 (see HookupDiagram on page 5).

As with any poweredcomponents, protectthem from moisture. Ifyou are setting them upoutdoors, make sure theyare under cover if youexpect rain.

CONNECTIONS

Balanced XLR Connectors

The SRS1500 has two female XLR in-puts that accept a balanced line-level signal. When connecting a balanced signal, be sureit’s wired per AES (Audio Engineering So-ciety) standards:

XLRHot (+) Pin 2Cold (–) Pin 3Shield (Ground) Pin 1

If connecting an unbalanced signal to theSRS1500 balanced input, be sure that thesignal high (hot) connection is wired to Pin 2and the unbalanced ground connection iswired to the low and the ground connec-tions of the balanced input (Pins 3 and 1).If there are ground-loop problems, try con-necting the unbalanced ground connectiononly to the input low connection (Pin 3),and leaving the input ground connectiondisconnected.

Unbalanced Male XLR Connector

There are also four male XLR connec-tors labeled THRU (FULL RANGE OUTPUT)and HIGH PASS (MID/HIGH FREQ) OUTPUT.These are also wired according to theAES standard.

The THRU output connectors allow youto connect more than one SRS1500 to yoursystem. Simply plug the signal source (i.e.,mixer output) into the first speaker’s FULLRANGE INPUT jacks, and patch that speak-er’s THRU jacks to the next speaker’sINPUT jacks, and so on, daisy-chainingmultiple speakers.

The THRU jack is wired straight from theFULL RANGE INPUT connector — there isno electronic circuitry between — so thesignal coming out of the THRU jack is ex-actly the same as the signal going in.

The HIGH PASS OUTPUT jacks provide aline-level signal of the frequencies above120Hz that you connect to a pair of activespeakers (or to a stereo amplifier powering apair of passive speakers). See the diagramson the rear panel of the SRS1500 for addi-tional connection information.

Page 7: SRS1500 Active Subwoofer System User's Manual - UNSHeat — This Mackie product should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, or other devices which produce heat. WARNING:The

7

AC POWERBe sure the SRS1500 is plugged into an

outlet that is able to supply the correct volt-age specified for your model. If the voltageshould drop below 97% of the specified linevoltage, the built-in amplifiers will nolonger be able to supply rated power. (Theywill continue to operate down to 80% ofthe rated line voltage, but won’t reach fullpower, resulting in lower headroom.)

Be sure the electrical service can supplyenough amperage for all the componentsconnected to it.

We recommend that a stiff (robust) sup-ply of AC power be used because theamplifiers place high current demands onthe AC line. The more power that is avail-able on the line, the louder the speakers willplay and the more peak output power willbe available for cleaner, punchier bass. Asuspected problem of “poor bass perfor-mance” is often caused by a weak ACsupply to the amplifiers.

Never remove theground pin on the powercord of the SRS1500 orany other component. This is very dangerous.

THERMALCONSIDERATIONS

The SRS1500 has a powerful 600 wattamplifier built-in. As amplifiers produceheat, it is important to dissipate the heat asquickly as possible. This results in increasedreliability and longevity for the amplifier.

The amplifier module is mounted on alarge heatsink, which is cooled by convec-tion where cool air is drawn through it’sfins, carrying the heat away. In order forthis convection cooling to work efficiently,it is important to provide adequate airspacebehind the loudspeaker. When you positionthe SRS1500, we recommend leaving atleast six inches of air space behind it.

In the unlikely event of the amplifieroverheating, a built-in thermal switch willactivate, which mutes the signal. When theamplifier has cooled down to a safe operat-

SERVICE INFORMATION

Warranty ServiceIf you think your subwoofer has a prob-

lem, please do everything you can toconfirm it before calling for service, includ-ing reading through the followingTroubleshooting section. Doing so mightsave you from being deprived of yourMackie loudspeaker.

Of all Mackie products returned for ser-vice (which is hardly any at all), many arecoded “CND” — Could Not Duplicate—which usually means the problem lay some-where else in the system. The followingtroubleshooting tips may sound obvious, but here are some things you can check:

Troubleshooting

No power• Our favorite question: Is it plugged in?

Make sure the AC outlet is live (checkwith a tester or lamp).

• Our next favorite question: Is the POWERswitch on? If not, try turning it on.

• Is the POWER LED on the rear panelglowing green? If not, make sure the ACoutlet is live. If so, refer to “No sound”next.

• The internal AC line fuse may be blown. This is not a user serviceable part. Ifyou suspect the AC line fuse is blown, please see the “Repair” section on page 9.

ing temperature, the thermal switch resetsitself, and the SRS1500 resumes normaloperation.

If the thermal switch activates frequently, try turning down the level control a notchor two on the mixing console (or other sig-nal source) or on the subwoofer itself toavoid overheating the amplifiers.

If the temperature in the room is toohigh, it could cause the amplifier to over-heat. In this case, you should try aiming afan at the rear panel to move more airacross the heatsink panel.

Page 8: SRS1500 Active Subwoofer System User's Manual - UNSHeat — This Mackie product should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, or other devices which produce heat. WARNING:The

8

No sound• Is the input LEVEL control for the input

source or the subwoofer turned all theway down? Verify that all the volumecontrols in the system are properlyadjusted.

• Is the signal source working (and makingunion scale)? Make sure the connectingcables are in good repair and securelyconnected at both ends. Make sure theoutput volume (gain) control on themixing console is turned up sufficientlyto drive the inputs of the speaker.

• Make sure the mixer does not have aMute on or a Processor loop engaged. Ifyou find something like this, make surethe volume/gain is turned down beforedisengaging the offending switch.

• Is the thermal protection circuit activated?Make sure there is at least six inches offree space behind the SRS1500.

Poor bass performance• Check the polarity of the connections

between the mixer and the loudspeak-ers. You may have your positive andnegative connections reversed at oneend of one cable, causing one loud-speaker to be out-of-phase.

• Try switching the PHASE switch on therear panel. This affects the polaritybetween the full-range speakers and theSRS1500 and may improve the low-frequency response.

Poor sound• Is it loud and distorted? Make sure that

you’re not overdriving a stage in thesignal chain. Verify that all level controlsare set properly.

• Is the input connector plugged com-pletely into the jack? Be sure allconnections are secure. It’s a good ideato periodically clean all electricalconnections with a non-lubricatingelectrical contact cleaner.

Noise• Make sure all connections to the active

loudspeakers are good and sound.• Make sure none of the signal cables are

routed near AC cables, power trans-formers, or other EMI-inducing devices.

• Is there a light dimmer or other SCR-based device on the same AC circuit asthe SRS1500? Use an AC line filter orplug the SRS1500 into a different ACcircuit.

Hum• Try disconnecting the cable connected

to the INPUT jack. If the noise disap-pears, it could be a “ground loop,”rather than a problem with theSRS1500. Try some of the followingtroubleshooting ideas:

• Use balanced connections throughoutyour system for the best noise rejection.

• Whenever possible, plug all the audioequipment’s linecords into outlets whichshare a common ground. The distancebetween the outlets and the commonground should be as short as possible.
