Growing from a humble beginning in 1992, VELS Group of Institutions are now spread across 4 Campuses within the city of Chennai. Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies (VELS University) has successfully marched into the sixth year since it was declared as Deemed to be University in 2008. Vels University enjoys a respectable position as a seat of learning and research amongst the reputed universities in India. It is indeed a matter of great satisfaction for me to note that significant improvements have been made in the sphere of imparting higher education at the University.
Sri Venkateswara Dental College & Hospital, a unit of Vels Group of Institutions was started in the year 2007 with the main objective to produce high quality dental surgeons and provide quality dental treatment to the rural population. Sri Venkateswara Dental College and Hospital o�ers the best and the right educational environment in dental medicine, producing professionals who possess the capacity and ability to deal with an ever-increasing knowledge base and rapid technological changes. Innovative research facilities and teaching methodologies have been introduced which will greatly help to create an atmosphere essential for acquiring a high academic standard.

INTRODUCTION
OBJECTIVES
VELS Group of Institutions was established in 1992 with the aim of transforming an individual into a complete man with character and ability committed to national service and development. VELS Group was founded by Dr. Ishari K. Ganesh, M. Com., M.B.A, M.L., Ph.D., a visionary and an eminent educationist, in fond memory of his father Shri. Isari Velan, the Former Deputy Minister in the popular Government of Dr. MGR. The main motive of VELS Group of Institutions is to take education to the humble thresholds of first generation learners and weaker sections of the society.

LOCATION
Sri Venkateswara Dental College and Hospital campus (Vels Thalambur campus) is located in Thalambur which is 20 kms from Adayar, 16kms from Tidel Park and 3kms from Navalur o� the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), IT Highway of Tamil Nadu. It is located just before the SIPCOT Software and Biotechnology Parks in Siruseri. Old Mahabalipuram Road is a 4-lane highway, with public transport buses flying frequently. VELS Group has its own fleet of buses connecting the campus with di�erent points of Chennai city and suburbs. The campus is situated in a calm and peaceful area amidst sylvan surroundings with an atmosphere conducive to academic pursuits. The institutions at VELS Thalambur Campus are managed by Vels Institutes of Sciences, Technology and Advanced Studies (VISTAS). Shri Isari Velan Mission Hospital, a palliative care center is also situated within the campus.

The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is one of the oldest specialities in dentistry. It deals with correction of dental malocclusion and correction of skeletal deformity with growth modula-tion or surgical orthodontics. We believe in sculpting a better smile to lead a better life.Department o�ers services in treating malocclusions with Removable orthodontic appliances, fixed orthodontic appliances, Growth modification through functional/orthopedic appliances, Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics, correction of severe deformity through orthodontic treatment like miniscrew anchorage / orthodontic treatment assisted orthognathic surgery.
1. DEPARTMENT OF ORTHODONTICS & DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS
Prosthodontics is the department, which aims at improving the oral health status of geriatric patient by providing dentures thereby increas-ing the chewing e�ciency and self-confidence leading to improved quality of life. Department vision is as follows – perpetual preservation of what remains is utmost important than meticulous replacement of what has been lost.
2. DEPARTMENT OF PROSTHODONTICS & CROWN & BRIDGE
The Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics is dedicated towards quality education of dental student in the subject of Conserva-tive Dentistry and Endodontics along with the preclinical and clinical skills for the management of various clinical cases, which includes diagnosis, treatment planning, follow up and post treatment care. Apart from the curriculum given by Dental Council of India, research work in the various fields of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics including latest advancements and technological development are being carried out by the department. The department has a preclinical wing which is devoted towards the teaching and training the under graduate students about the basics of the subjects preparing them to face the various challenges in clinical wing and bringing out the best dental health care professionals in them.
3. DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY & ENDODONTICS
Periodontics is a department which deals with diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases a�ecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, and study of dental implants. The department provides clinical training for the undergraduate students and caters to the periodontic needs for the patients. The department provides various treatment facili-ties like scaling & root planing, splinting, gingivectomy, flap surgeries, mucogingival surgeries and dental implants. The department consists of latest equipments like implant units, dental operating microscopes and lasers.
4. DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialty of medicine and dentistry that focuseson the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of diseases and disorders of the face and jaws. The department trains students in treating trauma, congenital and acquired defects and disorders, facial infections, cancers of the head and neck region, as well as to perform extractions, place-ment of dental implants, and dental anesthesia and sedation. The department handles minor oral surgical procedures and cases under General anesthesia and also provides basic Life Support Program since 2012.
5. DEPARTMENT OF ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY.
Oral and maxillofacial pathology is the specialty of dentistry and pathology that investigates the cause, nature, process and e�ects of the diseases a�ecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. Department of oral pathology is also involved in training the undergraduates in oral biology, a composite of basic Dental Sciences & their clinical applications which includes instruc-tions in the subject of Dental Morphology, Oral Embryology, Oral Histology and Oral Physiology. This is essential for understanding the histological basis of various dental treatment procedures.
6. ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY
Oral medicine is a specialty within dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and management of complex diagnostic and medical disorders a�ecting the mouth and jaws. Clinicians with advanced training in this discipline manage oral mucosal disease, salivary gland disorders, and facial pain syndromes and also provide dental care for patients with complicated medical disease. Our department also trains students in taking and processing Intraoral and Extraoral radiographs.
7. ORAL MEDICINE, DIAGNOSIS& RADIOLOGY
Paedodontics is an age defined specialty that provides primary and compre-hensive, Preventive and Therapeutic oral health care for infants and Children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. The implicit in the philosophy of children’s dentistry is a commitment to consider the child’s feelings, to gain the child’s confidence and co-operation to perform the treatment in kind and sympathetic manner, to be concerned with not only providing the treatment currently required but also promoting child’s future dental health by stimulating the attitude and regarding dental-behavior.
8. DEPARTMENT OF PEDODONTICS AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY:
Department of Public health dentistry, earlier known as Department of Preventive and Community dentistry focuses mainly on serving the needy, under privileged locality people through the outreach activities. Outreach activities includes
Free dental screening & Treatment camps. Dental screening & Treatment via PHC in collaboration with TN Govt. Stimulating, Implementing dental health awareness to the people through mimes, social dramas, short films, health education posters & videos, rallies. Another important part of the department is “RESEARCH”, encourage students in performing research activities. In the last three years 42578 patients were benefited via camps and 24381 patients were benefited via PHCs.

Dr. LODD MAHENDRA - PRINCIPAL, PROFESSOR AND HOD-DEPT OF ORTHODONTICS & DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS
Dr. LODD MAHENDRA completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1981 from Madras University. He was adjudged the Best Outgoing student in 1981 and has been awarded with numerous medals and prizes. He completed his Masters in Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) from Government Dental College, Chennai in 1986. He has completed his M.S in orthodontics from Edinburgh University. He has a rich experience in training Undergraduate and Postgraduate students for the past 30 years. He has held numer-ous important posts like Chairman, Indian Board of Orthodontics and Editor, Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society. He has several presentations and publications to his credit.

Dr. V. RANGARAJAN - VICE PRINCIPAL,PROFESSOR AND HOD-DEPT OF PROSTHODONTICS & CROWN & BRIDGE
Dr. V. RANGARAJAN, an eminent Prosthodontist, completed his bachelors from Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu and Masters Degree from Dr. R. Ahamed Dental College, Kolkata. He has held numerous posts in the past such as Former member of DCI, Secretary & treasurer of Indian Prosthodontic Soceity, Immediate past President of Indian Dental Association (Madras Branch), Editorial board of Journal of Indian Prosthodontic Society and Indian Journal of Research, Faculty member of Board of Studies for Rajiv Gandhi University of Health and Sciences, Guest speaker in Asian Academy of Prosthodontics (AAP) in November 2014 at Taiwan, Organising Secretary of Asian Academy of Prosthodontics. He is a Diplomate of ICOI and has undergone training in Germany and USA. He has authored Textbook of Prosthodontics in 2013.
Dr. M. R. SRINIVASANPROFESSOR AND HOD-DEPT OF CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY AND ENDODONTICS
Dr. M. R. SRINIVASAN has 27 years of experience as teaching faculty. He has won fellowship award from ISDR. He has 23 publications to his credit and has delivered innumerable guest lectures. He served as the Secretary General of Indian Society of Dental Research and has served as Executive Committee member, Vice President and President for IACDE. He is a member of the editorial Board of Journal of Conser-vative Dentistry and Journal of Indian Dental Association. He is currently the presi-dent elect of CEAT and executive committee member of IDA Madras Branch. He is a recognized Ph D in Dr. MGR University. He has authored chapters in the book “Face-1” and “Face-2” by Dr. Lakshmi Narayanan.
Dr. S. SABITHA SUDARSAN,PROFESSOR AND HOD-DEPT OF PERIODONTICS
Dr. S. SABITHA SUDHARSAN has more than 20 years of experience as teaching faculty. She completed her Bachelors and Masters Degree from Government Dental College, Chennai. She has innumerable national and international publications to her credit. She has co-authored a book on Evidence based Periodontics. She has guided Postgraduate students in their dissertation and has served as inspector for DCI and Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.

Dr. T. SRINIVASA PRASAD completed his Bachelor’s degree from Vinayaka Mission Dental College and his Masters degree in oral maxillofacial surgery from Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu. He has 15 years of teaching experience and is a Fellow member of the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India. He holds the position of DCI Inspector for the Dental Council of India. He is University external examiner for UG and PG course. He also serves as University Exam paper setter for Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.

Ms. B. Niranjana, first batch student of Sri Venkateswara Dental College and Hospital secured triple university gold medal for ranking first in University exams. She won Prof. B. P. Rajan Gold Medal for securing University First Rank in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. N. Gnanasundaram Endownment for securing university First Rank in Oral Medicine & Radiology and for ranking overall First in University Exams.
She received the triple gold medal from the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. J. Jayalalitha & His Excellency, Governor of Tamil Nadu, Dr. K. Rosaiah at the Silver Jubilee year 25th Convocation held at the Centenary Auditorium, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai on 20.08.2013.
As per the policy of the institution and management, Ms. B. Niranjana was awarded a cash prize of Rs.3, 00,000 for her academic excellence by Dr. Ishari K. The student should have completed 17 years as on 31st December of the year of admission.
Age Limit
The student should have passed Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu orany other equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as main subjects.
• Students belonging to category other than SC / ST, should have obtained 50 percent and above marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany / Zoology)• Students belonging to SC / ST category should have obtained 40 percent marks in the above mentioned subjects
Eligibility
1. The policy of the State Govt. of Tamil Nadu is followed in admissions2. As per policy 65% of Total intake (65 seats) is filled by Govt. of Tamilnadu through single window system.3. The remaining 35% of seats (35 seats) is allotted for Management quota.4. TNPPCA-HS conducts an entrance exam with prior approval from the Govt. of Tamilnadu and anybody who is seeking seats under management quota shall take this entrance test.5. Seats are filled as per the directions of the Govt. of Tamilnadu taking into consideration the marks obtained in qualify ing examinations and in entrance examinations.6. Prospectus for the BDS course may be obtained either form the institution o�ce or from the Administration o�ce.7. The candidates should submit the following original documents during admission
a. Three Passport Size Photographs of the applicant b. One self addressed stamped(10/-) envelope along with the photocopy of : i. Mark sheet of the qualifying examination or equivalent.
ii. Provisional Pass certificate/Degree Certificate of the qualifying examination
iii. Transfer Certificate and contact certificate from the institute last studied.
iv. Community Certificate
v. Applications that have passed from institutions outside Tamil Nadu should get Eligibility Certificate from the
Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University for Dental and Nursing Courses.
c. Any other document or certificate required as per the rules of the university or Dental Council of India. Foreign Students must also submit i. No objection Certificate from the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
ii. Eligibility Certificate from the respected University.
iii. Appropriate Visa.
8. Candidate and his/her parent/guardian should admit a declaration in the prescribed form at the time of admission.9. The original certificate submitted at the time of admission will be returned only after the completion of the course.10. Candidates are advised to take enough number of photocopies of mark sheets and certificates before submitting them to the college at the time of admission.11. After admission if any student wishes to discontinue the course, he/she shall pay the entire fee payable for the complete course of study, before being relieved from the college.12. Fee once paid by the student/parent will not be refunded under any circumstance.13. The admitted students should obey the rules and regulations of the college and the college reserves the right of dismissing a student in case of disobedience.14. The institution is not responsible for any accident to the students due to careless handling of equipment/chemicals.

1. The tuition fee payable will be intimated at the time of the admission.2. Entire fee is payable in advance for each year.3. Fee should be paid either in cash or Demand Draft at the college o�ce.4. Delay in payment of term fee will invite a fine of Rs. 500/- per week beyond due date.5. The management reserves the right to modify the fee structure without prior notification.6. Students who do not remit fees by due date will not be permitted to attend classes or to stay at the hostel.
Fee Structure:
Scholarships for eligible candidates are given by the central and state governments. The students have to apply within 21 days from their admission. The management provides fee concessions to the most deserving students who score ranks in the university examinations.
Scholarships and Fee Concessions:
1. Students should not leave the institution premises during the class hours without the permission of the competent authority.2. Latecomers will not be allowed to the classes.3. Students will be responsible for all the equipments entrusted to them.4. Cell Phones are banned inside the college premises.5. Students should compulsorily were their identity cards inside the campus.6. The management reserves the right to modify the class timings and schedule.7. Ragging is totally banned and is punishable as per the Government order.8. The decision of the Principal is final and should obey in all matters pertaining to the institution.9. Legal disputes, if any are subject to the jurisdiction of Courts at Chennai.
General rules and regulations
1. Absence from attending classes without prior permission is a breach of discipline and such absence will attract punishment and should be avoided.2. Absence for more than a week without getting prior permission from the HOD/Principal may lead to removal of the name from the nominal roll.3. Sri Venkateswara Dental College & Hospital: Students should require a minimum attendance of 75% in each subject theory and practical as per the regulations of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
Attendance:
If any incidents of ragging comes to the notice of the Anti-ragging committee and authority, the concerned student shall be given liberty to explain and if his explanation is not found satisfactory, the authority would expel him from the institution.

Individual lecture halls for each year that are Air conditioned and fully equipped with excellent acoustic systems, adequate teaching and learning facilities including audio visual aids,, LCD projectors and ample seating capacity.
LECTURE HALLS:
The central library of the institution serves as the ‘Center for knowledge’ with a seating capacity of 200–300. It houses 3260 books with 1097 back volumes. A total of 15 national and international journals are subscribed in the library. Further, it has e-learning resources in the form of EBSCO and ERMED. It has various sections including sta� reading room, journal section, reading hall, stack section and photo copying facility. The library functions from 8.30 A.M to 8.00 P.M. Faculty and students can avail the borrowing facility against their Identity card.
LIBRARY:
Shri Isari Velan Mission Hospital was established in 2012 with the objective of providing a�ordable health care to the weaker section of the society. Located within the institution campus, it also serves as a teaching hospital for under-graduate dental students. It is equipped with in-patient and out-patient wards, consultation rooms, operating theatre, observation room, male and female wards, Dialysis ward, physiotherapy department, pharmacy and lab facilities. It houses a palliative care unit for terminally ill patients. HOSPITAL:
Our Strength is the facilities within the campus. The audito-rium serves as the venue for various curricular, extracur-ricular as well as cultural activities of the institution. Built in a very spacious area it can accommodate around 1500 delegates at a time. The auditorium also houses a fully air condition board room with a seating capacity of 50.

Sri Venkateswara Dental College and Hospital provides accom-modation facilities for both students and sta�s. The ambience of these facilities makes them feel at home. The boys and girls hostel have 73 and 143 rooms respectively. Rooms of various sizes that can accommodate two or three or four students are available. Each room is equipped with cot, study table, cupboard, table, chair with good lighting and adequate ventila-tion. The hostel is supported with 24 hours power back up facility and clean drinking water filtered using R.O system further, the college has also accommodation facilities for the faculty. The sta� quarters consists of four blocks of buildings. There are two double bed room flats with attached bath rooms in the ground floor of each block. In total, there are eight double bed room flats for the occupation of sta�s.

The hostels and sta� quarters are Wi-Fi enabled.

Large TV sets with cable connections have been provided in each hostel and sta� quarters.
Entertainment facilities :
The mess in the campus runs through a catering contractor. There are separate dining portions for girls and boys. The mess is provided with latest infrastructure and adequate ventilation and exhaust fans etc. About 200 students can dine at any given time. In addition to the above, a separate cafeteria to cater to the need of the day scholars is also available here. Good quality raw materials are used in this canteen and cooking is done with R.O water..
Mess :
Sri Venkateswara Dental College and Hospital operates college buses in di�erent routes to di�erent parts of the city to facilitate ease of transport of the students and sta�s to the college. These buses drop the students and sta�s back to their respective bus stops after the college. Separate buses on special routes operate to and fro nearby areas for patients comfort.
TRANSPORT
Sri Venkateswara Dental College and Hospital has two Board Rooms to conduct the regular sta� meeting and Annual General Body meeting. The Board rooms are air- conditioned and equipped with audiovisual aids.

Keeping this in mind the institution has set up a huge playground with basketball, volleyball, throw ball, kho kho courts etc. There is separate room for Indoor games including Table Tennis, Chess and Carroms. Apart from that a gymnasium with advanced fitness equipments has been made available to students within the campus. The institution has a well qualified physical director to train the students in sports and games.

The third South Indian Undergraduate Dental Convention - Mokshaa’14 was organised in our college campus on 26th and 27th April 2014. The premier dental Convention was inaugurated by Dr. J. Radhakrishnan IAS, Secretary to the Government, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu and Mr. M. N. Manjunatha IPS, Inspec-tor General of Police, North Zone, Chennai. Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, IAS, in his special address stressed the importance of oral care and its link in systemic diseases. After the grand success of Mokshaa’12 and Mokshaa’13, the third edition of the South Indian Undergraduate Dental Convention- Mokshaa’14 was even bigger with much valour and splendour with 2500 Student delegates from 40 Dental Colleges across South India. About 200 Paper Presentations and 100 Poster Presentations were presented in the Convention. Overall the convention was remarkable and one of its kind in serving as a rostrum to academics, cultural events and sports to chisel out the best in every student delegate. Mokshaa’14 was a complete regal ostentation that would become more sought after event in the years to come.
