SKANDA SHASHTI FESTIVALMonday, October 28 – Sunday, November 3, 2019
Skanda Shashti marks the triumph of Lord Subrahmanya over the evil Sura Padma. The son of Lord Siva killed the demon Sura Padma with His Holy Spear (Vel) and brought relief and joy to the suffering celestials and humans. Allegorically the Vel represents the Jnaana Shakti (Power of Wisdom) of the Lord and Sura Padma the demon of Ego and Ignorance within us. Lord Subrahmanya is hence considered to be the lord of wisdom who dispels our ego and ignorance. The devotees of
Muruga (as Lord Subrahmanya is called in several parts of the world) observe austerities such as fast and mouna vratham starting from the day of Prathama Thithi to (and including) Skanda Shasti day. The Shashti Vratham begins on Monday, October 28 and ends on Sunday, November 3. The day after Skanda Shashti is celebrated as Devasena Kalyanam. Participation in these Archanas and Homam is believed to ward off evil and usher in peace and prosperity.

The actual MANDALA UTSAVA AARAMBHAM will start on Sunday November 17, 2019 morning with Ganapathi Homam, Dwaja Aarohanam, Sahasra Abhishekam, Archana, Deeparadhana and end in the evening with PADI PUJA, Athaazha Puja, Seeveli, Harivaraasanam. The Ayyappa MANDALA PUJA is on Friday December 27, 2019, and the MAKARA SANKRANTHI Puja is on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Ayyappa Pujas will be performed in the morning and evenings
every day, and special Ayyappa Pujas will be performed on weekends as per schedule found elsewhere in this Newsletter.Irumudi can be prepared at the temple at 8:00 am on Special Puja days. SSVT SENIOR CITIZENS MEET UPThe SSVT Senior Citizens Group meets twice a month on the second and fourth Wednesday in the Education room from 11 am to 1 pm followed by a potluck lunch in the cafeteria. Every time, roughly about 1500 sandwiches are prepared and delivered to Martha’s Table, a DC shelter. SSVT encourages all devotees especially youth to participate in the program. We hope you have visited this center. In his book on Shirdi Sai Baba, Shri Rangaswami Parsarthi, a sub editor of the newspaper “The Hindu” describes Sai as “God who walked on Earth”. Baba helped his devotees in many ways to remove their fears and anxieties, ward of disease and misfortune and bring hope and cheer into their lives. All Sai wanted from his devotees was Shraddha and Saburi, or faith and patience. As Baba said, once the strings are entrusted to the Satguru, there is no cause for grief.

Ayyappa Vratham Devotees who wish to go to Sabarimala have to observe vratham (follow certain austerities) for one mandalam (41 days) to purify the mind and soul. On the first day of the month of Karthika/Vrichikam (the middle of November), devotees wear the mudra maala and start the vratham.

Important austerities to be observed during vratham• Observe Brahmacharyam during the vratham • Always start the conversation with “Swami Saranam” • Take shower twice daily and chant the names of Lord Ayyappa • Control your temper and be kind to others • Consume only freshly cooked vegetarian food • Do not smoke or consume alcoholic beverages • Attend Puja either at the temple or wherever conducted • Treat your body, mind and intellect as the abode of Ayyappa
How to prepare irumudi (in brief) After performing Ayyappa Puja, fill the mudra coconut with melted ghee. If you are a Kanni Ayyappan or Kanni Maalikappuram (first timer), Guruswamy will help you to fill the mudra coconut with ghee. Mudra coconut and other Pujaitems must be placed in the front pocket of the Irumudi and the other two coconuts must be placed in the rear pocket. Always keep chanting the names of Lord Ayyappa while preparing the Irumudi. Never place the Irumudi on the floor; always place it on a towel and treat it with Bhakthi.

Akshaya Vata SandeshHindu Dharma prescribes that our parents and forefathers should be worshipped on a daily basis while they are alive and also when they depart from this world. When they leave this world it becomes the Vedic duty of their descendants to worship their departed souls on a daily basis (through Brahma Yagna) apart from performing Shannavati (96 specific days in a year); during Parvakaala like Uttaraayana, Dakshinaayana, during Eclipse time; during Pitru Paksha; through annual ceremony; through Theertha/Kshethra sraaddha; Pushkara shraaddha; while performing marriage/upanayana (Nandi shraaddha) etc. Ignoring forefathers; Moola Purushas of one’s lineage; is like ignoring one’s own existence.

We are delighted to share with you the news that Dr. Siva Subramanian, Founding Trustee and First Chairman of Sri Siva Vishnu Temple Trust, is being honored by the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington for his outstanding and compassionate leadership of the Hindu Community, the medical community, and the broader interfaith community in our area for over 45 years. This is the first time, IFC is honoring a Hindu, that too - a close
friend to all of us. To celebrate this, we invite you to join us at a unique concert event on November 14, 2019, at the Washington Hebrew Congregation, 3935 Macomb Street, Washington DC. The concert will include artistic performances of music and dance from several area religious faith communities. OBITUARYSrimathi Kala Gopalan Thaivalappil Smt. Kala Gopalan Thaivalappil (59) passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. She was undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, which she had been bravely fighting since February of 2019. She was a supporter of Sri Siva Vishnu Temple, and had always helped in whatever way she could. She was an avid gardener with an incredible green thumb, growing plants as exotic as figs and persimmons right in her backyard in Lanham, Maryland and had made thousands of garlands in her lifetime to give to the temple. She worked for the State of Maryland as Network Specialist Supervisor/LAN Admin position for the Office of Information Technology, and was admired and respected for her dedication, sincerity and trouble-shooting skills.Family was her passion, and she persuaded all of them to be sincere and hardworking and motivated them to do the right thing. She is survived by her mother, Renuka Gopalan, her husband, Saseendran Thaivalappil, her daughter Silpa Thaivalappil (and her husband Pushpak Taunk) and her son Gopisankar Thaivalappil. May her Soul rest in peace!!
