cities. Anuradhapura was found in the 4th century BC and is famous for its Dagabas
(Temples), Reservoirs, and beautifully landscaped gardens, the ruins of which still remain to
this day. The sacred Bo Tree "Jayasri Maha Bodhi" is one of Sri Lanka's most sacred places
found in Anuradhapura. This sacred tree is reckoned as the oldest surviving historical tree in the world.
It was brought to Sri Lanka by the Theri Sangamitta, daughter of Emperor Asoka and was planted in the
Mahameghavana Park in Anuradhapura in 249 BC by King Devanampiyatissa. It is said to be the southern branch
of the Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya in India under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment. Isurumuniya
temple, built in the 3rd century B.C., was the first repository of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The temple
carved out of solid rock, houses a large statue of the seated Buddha. It is known best for its rock carvings, the
most popular being ‘The Isuruminiya Lovers’. There are many theories offered as to their identity. The style of the
sculpture resembles the Gupta Art of India. The lovers, therefore, may have been carved in the 5th century.

Polonnaruwa, situated 218 kilometers from Colombo is yet another well planned medieval
city defended by enclosed walls, graced by palaces, shrines, monasteries, pavilions, parks,
ponds and irrigation lakes which bears witness to a glorious past. A dominant feature of the
city is the vast irrigation lake of 5940 acres aptly named "Parakrama Samudraya" or the sea
of Parakrama after its royal builder King Parakramabahu depicted an example of the advanced
engineering and construction skills prevalent during the ancient times. This gigantic reservoir was built to collect
rain water, which did not permit a drop of water to go waste.
Then visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
Sigiriya is home to the 5th Century ‘Fortress in the Sky” which is perhaps the most fantastic
single wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the fortress. Within it triple-moated defence the huge rock
rises almost to a sheer height of 500ft. On its summit are the foundations of what was once
a great and sumptuous palace and gardens complete with swimming pool. On one of the stairways the only known ancient work of Sinhala secular painting survived in the form of
frescoes of life sized damsels in all the freshness and delicacy of their original color.

he built the most magnificent of Rock Temples to be found on the Island. In the first Cave is
a recumbent image of the Buddha 47ft long cut out of the Rock. There are images of deities associated with Buddhism all around. The frescoes on the ceiling date back to the 15th - 18th
Centuries. In the Second Cave, the finest and the largest of all, there are 150 life-size statues of Gods from the Buddhist religion along with numerous images of the Buddha himself. The ceiling is also covered
with frescoes, which depict great events in the life of the Buddha and landmarks in the history of the Sinhala

Nuwara Eliya - The ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against beautiful backdrops of Mountains, Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. It is supposed to be one of the coolest
places in the Island, but it is really just like an English spring day, although the temperature
does drop at night. All around Nuwara Eliya you will see evidence of the British influence, houses like country cottages or Queen Ann style mansions. The Victoria Park, in the middle
of the town, is a lovely place for a stroll or a picnic and is also good for Birding as you get some rare birds in this Park. Seasons may be absent elsewhere in Sri Lanka, but here you can read them by the flowers, which bloom in
the spring (March to May) and the fall (August and September). These are the “seasons” when low-country folk
flock to Nuwara Eliya to escape the sea level heat and humidity.

29th Feb – Nuwara Eliya/Yala
After scrumptious Breakfast with Variety, leave for Yala. En route witness the Ravana Falls.
The Ravana Falls (popularly known as Ravana Ella in Sinhala) is a popular sightseeing attraction in Sri Lanka. It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country. This
waterfall measures approximately 25 m (82 ft) in high and cascade from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to
resemble an areca flower with withering petals. But this is not the case in the dry season, where the flow of water reduces dramatically. The falls form part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife
Sanctuary. It is located 2 km (1 mi) away from the local railway station.
Proceed to Yala & check in at the hotel.

1st Mar – Yala/Galle
After scrumptious Breakfast with Variety, commence a half day jeep safari in the National Park of Yala.
YALA NATIONAL PARK - Also known as Ruhuna is an important national park on the
south east coast of Sri Lanka. The reserve covers 979 km², although only the original 141
km² are open to the public. Much of the reserve is parkland, but it also contains jungle,
beaches, freshwater lakes and rivers and scrubland. The latter zone is punctuated with
enormous rocky outcrops. The range of habitats gives rise to a good range of wildlife. Yala
has the world's highest concentration of Leopards, although seeing this largely nocturnal carnivore still requires
some luck. There are good numbers of Asian Elephants, crocodile, Wild Boar, Water Buffalo and Grey langurs
amongst other large animals. The open parkland attracts birds of prey such as White-bellied Sea Eagle and the
wetlands have waders, Painted Storks, and the rare Black necked Stork. Landbirds of course are in abundance,
and include Sirkeer Malkoha, Indian Peafowl and Sri Lanka Jungle fowl.
Then proceed to Galle & check in at the hotel.

2nd Mar – Galle
After scrumptious Breakfast with Variety, proceed to Galle & commence a city tour including the Old Dutch Fort.
Galle is thriving. Galle owes its historic importance to its natural harbor and strategic location. It
has long been a hub of trade and commerce with ships from all parts of the world docking at the
ancient port to barter their goods for treasures from this island: precious gems, pearls, spices,
and scented woods. Galle is even referred to as the Biblical `Tar shish’ where King Solomon's
ships called at port to take aboard treasures. The accidental arrival of the Portuguese Lorenzo
De Almeida in 1505, when his fleet of ships steered off course following a storm at sea, changed
the history of this island nation. The Portuguese were followed by the Dutch in 1640 and then the British in 1796. With
each occupation, Galle’s landscape changed and the cultural influences remained. Colombo became Sri Lanka’s main port
in the 1870s and Galle’s influence waned, perhaps protecting its charm. The majority of Galle’s population is Sinhalese but

Colombo is the business and commercial center and the new capital is Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte which is only a few miles away. Colombo was only a small seaport,
which came into prominence in the 16th Century with the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505 and the development of it as a major Harbour during the British period and became the
capital in 1815 after Kandy was ceded to the British. The remains of the buildings during the
period and the Portuguese, Dutch and British rule are found in every area of the city. None of the Portuguese & Dutch fortifications are found today but some of their buildings and churches could be seen
in the Fort & Pettah areas. Visit Fort, the former British administrative center and military garrison, Sea Street - the Goldsmith’s quarters in the heart of Pettah, the Bazaar area where there is also a Hindu Temple with elaborate
