Best Practice: Environmental SustainabilitySri Guru Gobind Singh College initiated a novel idea of creating a mini forest on-campus in an area of 180 sq metres with an objective to promote a sustainable environment. This habitation has now grown into a flourishing natural air-purifying dense forest with as many as 37 native species of trees. It is a major step in reducing the Carbon Footprint of the region and towards regeneration of the ecosystem. It will help in creating 30 times more oxygen than regular plantations and it is fast developing into a hub of natural biodiversity. Commemorating 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji, it has been aptly named ‘Guru Nanak Sacred Forest’. 550 saplings of trees were planted as a tribute to Guru Nanak Devji’s ideology to live in harmony with the environment. This is a significant contribution towards the BioDiversity Target 2020 of the Government of India NBT (National Biodiversity) Project which stresses on the need to spread awareness among youth to play a positive role for the restoration, conservation and sustainable use of the vulnerable ecosystem. Following activities to promote environmental sustainability were organised:= A three day Workshop from April 1-3, 2019

was organised to create the Guru Nanak Sacred Forest in collaboration with EcoSikh and Afforest International organisations.

= A visit to Nepli Forest in the vicinity of Chandigarh was organised to study the native species of trees.

= An Observation and Research Centre was constructed. A Board displaying the Common name, Botanical name and pictures of 37

species of trees planted in the Forest was installed. An aesthetic landscaping of the surrounding area was done.

= An irrigation system partly sponsored by the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Punjab has been devised especially for the watering of the Forest. Various R&D Projects have been proposed with the involvement of Faculty and students.

= Dharat Suhavi Environment Society of the College has also contributed in a big way in sensitising the students about environmental sustainability by organising numerous activities.

= World Environment Day, Akshay Urja Diwas, Green Consumer Day, Mega Swachhta Pakhwada were celebrated through Expert talks delivered by renowned scientists like Dr Harinath Kasiganesa, ex-DRDO scientist focusing on Agrarian Medicine and Dr Amritpal Toor, ex-Coordinator Energy Research Centre, PU Chandigarh on renewable energy resources.

= Innovative eco-friendly practices were adopted like distributing LED light bulbs among participants, gifting auspicious saplings of Tulsi to the College Administrative staff and distributing cloth-bags among the students to discourage the use of plastic bags.

= A Composting unit consisting of a simple compost pit, a bacterial compost pit, a vermicompost pit and a vermiwash was installed to improve fertility of the soil and provide hands on training to students.

= The novel Sacred Forest Project and the outstanding environmental awareness

Cultural and Heritage PreservationIn an effort to reconnect the students with their own culture and encourage them to appreciate it, the College undertakes the practice of Cultural and Heritage preservation. The underlying principle of this practice is to develop a deeper understanding of the diverse culture and a profound respect for the rich heritage of the region. The College provides a platform for social, cultural and extension activities that helps the students to enhance their creativity and sensitise them towards the various aspects of their culture and heritage. To reinforce students’ interest and participation, following facilities are provided:= Our College gives skill based training to

students to revive the fading heritage and folk art of Punjab like Guddian Patole, Embroidery (Phulkari and Cross stitch), Pakhi making, basketry, Folk Orchestra, Peerhi Making, Prandha making, RassaVattna, Chikku making, Naala making, Khiddo making, Eennu making, Bagh, Knitting, Heritage Quiz etc. With this training, students develop the potential to become self employed. Some of our students are selling these products.

= Heritage walls have been created in college with the assistance of Panjab Digital Library to sensitize the youth towards their heritage and ancient monuments.

= Regular Trips and tours are organised to places of historical and cultural significance .

= The Centre for Sikh Religious and Cultural Studies provides a platform to the students for learning Gurmukhi, Gurmat Studies, Sikh String Instruments, Percussion Instruments (Jorhi/Tabla) and Shabad Gayan and Gurmat Sangeet classes (free) to equip them with skills to pursue a career.

= The Parkash Purab of Guru Gobind Singh Ji is observed as the Founders Day of the College. A three day celebration takes place where Sangat, Pangat and Langar, the bedrock of the egalitarian philosophy of the Sikhs are stressed. Students and teachers partake in preparation of Guru Ka Langar.

= The College is unique in the terms of imparting teaching in Religious and Sikh Studies; the syllabus intends to provide the students a comparative study of different religions inculcating a holistic understanding of religious and cultural traditions and promoting a secular atmosphere.

= Guru Nanak Sacred Forest was created on campus with the idea of promoting the rich heritage of micro-history of environment in Gurbani – the Sikh Gurus have always inspired mankind to be in harmony with nature and its Creator and took initiatives in planting trees with medicinal value in different parts of Punjab. We made an effort to delve into this rich heritage for creating the Sacred Forest to bring about an ecological equilibrium also reiterating the ancient Vedic philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the whole world is a family and we need to live in harmony with nature.
