13TH ANNUAL
Rising Star Band Review & Field Tournament MUSIC BOOSTERS
The Scripps Ranch Music Boosters proudly welcome you to the 13th annual Rising Star Marching Band Field Tournament. We hope all of the marching band students, color guard performers, directors and instructors, judges, parents, family and friends enjoy a very spirit filled day. Tournaments offer so much opportunity – a chance for our musicians and performers to put on a show, to measure their skills, celebrate their successes and learn where to fine tune their efforts. We hope that today’s event also offers you a special day to appreciate your band’s hard work and talent, take joy in your music and simply enjoy each others’ company. We greatly appreciate the fact that you choose to spend your Halloween with us, and are working hard to make today a real treat for all. If we can do anything to make your visit more enjoyable please let us know. Happy Halloween! Kelly Jenkins‐Pultz, President Scripps Ranch Music Boosters

13TH ANNUAL
Rising Star Band Review & Field Tournament Adjudication
Band Review and Judging Process Music This is the most important caption and receives the largest percentage of the total score. In general, the judges are looking at these areas of music performance: Musicianship Tone quality, dynamics, intonation, interpretation, phasing and style. Technique Articulation, attacks, releases, and rhythmic accuracy, blend and balance (without individual or sections dominating the band sound) Ensemble Dynamic contrast, projection, precision, tempo, and pulse. Musical Content Music challenge, style, continuity/transition and suitability.
Marching Basically an execution caption. Judges usually look at how well you do, what you do, rather than evaluating the content of the show. Marching/Movement Style, in phase/in step, appropriate size of step, execution, precision, anticipation/hesitation and body control. Ensemble Technique Alignment, interval, distance, clarity of form, movement and development of arms. Individual Technique Posture/carriage, discipline, pride and bearing, individual alignment and instrument/equipment angle.
General Effect Arguably the most subjective and difficult area to judge. Program Effectiveness Content, staging, continuity/flow, variety, tension and release, moods, contrast, imagination, creativity and utilization of all elements. Performance Effectiveness Musical impression, style projection, precision as to effect, poise, pride/spirit/confidence, expression and attention to detail. Showmanship Audience Appeal, appearance, entertainment value, effectiveness of auxiliary units and visual interpretation of music. Coordination of Elements Total interrelationship of all visual and musical elements to properly present musical style and various moods. Consider adaptability of elements, staging, continuity, flow and culmination.
