Type 1 studios Studio 1: Design of a piece of furniture for ‘Relaxation’ Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe, Atula Patwardhan Creative thinking technique used: Mind - mapping Conducted for: Students of 3rd Sem. 2009 at SMMCA

Students were to design a piece of furniture for relaxation. They were to imagine what ‘relaxation’ meant for various age groups and design for a specific age group in mind. Mind mapping was the technique used. They had to begin with ‘Relaxation’ as the center and create the mind map. The center of the mind map was to be the word ‘Relaxation’ and students were to go on adding associative words. The first tier of words would be words directly emanating from the central words. The second tier would be words emanating from the first tier words. The third tier words would emanate from the second tier words and so on. They were asked to keep on generating words till the entire sheet was full. The mind mapping was conducted as a group activity (see fig. 5.1.1.1). Once the mind map was completed, students were asked to pick up single or pairs of random words from across the mind map and combine them to generate 4-5 design concepts, from which the best one would be evolved into the final design solution (see fig. 5.1.1.2). Students worked on individual basis from word selection stage onwards.

Studio 2: Design of a ‘Wearable Accessory’ Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe, Atula Patwardhan Creative thinking techniques used: Brainstorming & Mindmapping Conducted for: Students of 3rd Sem. 2010 at SMMCA

The task was to design an accessory for day to day use, which would be worn on the body for convenience purpose. The design activity started with mind mapping & brainstorming. The exercises progressed in the manner similar to studio 1 and were also group activities (see fig. 5.1.1.3). After the completion of the mind mapping & brainstorming, students were asked to select single or pairs of words from either the mind map or the brainstorming sheet and combine them to generate multiple design concepts from which the final concept would be selected and evolved into the final design solution (see fig. 5.1.1.4). In this second stage students worked on individual basis on their design concepts.

Studio 3: Design of Trophy for Film Awards Function Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe, Atula Patwardhan Creative thinking technique used: Rapid sketching Conducted for: Students of 4th Sem. 2011 at SMMCA

Students were asked to design a trophy for a film awards function. The creative thinking techniques used were Mind mapping, followed by Rapid Sketching. After students made the mind map as a group activity, they were asked to pick up words from the mind map. But in this studio we went a step further by asking them to use another creative technique of rapid sketching (see fig. 5.1.1.5). Students were asked to make 10 - 15 sketches of the selected words in 5 minutes. The best sketch idea was to be evolved into the final design solution. The rapid sketching stage onwards students worked on individual basis. In this studio students were given additional instructions to try and think out of the box and steer away from typical designs. 5.1 Phase II: Pilot studios The second phase consisted of pilot studios. All the studios were architectural design studios conducted by me, with an exception of two studios conducted by colleagues. The structuring and choice of the design studios is detailed out in the previous chapter. The conclusions of Phase I and Phase II were concurrently consolidated in the form of key aspects, which were the basis of key terms and processes in the creative process in the design process. The pilot studios have been analyzed using the scaffolding of these key terms and processes. The details of the studios, methodology, analysis and conclusions of all these studios are presented in the next chapter.

Stage 3: Compressed Conflict Students were asked to choose characters from each group (animal and inanimate object) that were contrasting in nature and write them in pairs (see fig. 5.3.3.c). They were to choose 1 or 2 of the most interesting combinations.

Stage 4: 2D Composition Students were to make 2D compositions using basic geometric shapes and lines that would manifest the chosen pair or pairs of words. Stage 5: 3D Exploration The 2D composition was then to be reinterpreted in terms of a 3D composition that would still retain the character of the chosen words (see fig. 5.3.3.d).

Observations: Majority of the 2nd sem. students were able to interpret the words into a fairly good 2D abstract compositions and overall students did excellent work with the 2D compositions. However, when it came to interpretation of the 2D composition into a 3D

Studio 4 Design of children’s play area: Conducted for 3rd Sem. & 7th Sem. Students of SMMCA, 2012 Creative thinking technique used: Brainstorming & Word Play Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe, Atula Patwardhan, Anil Deshmukh, Lakshmi Rao Objective: Derive an interesting design concept for children’s play area through exploration of words and interpreting the words in a spatial configuration Stage 1: The activity started off with brainstorming about various activities that children enjoy. From this students were asked to generate interesting words as Word Play (see fig. 5.3.4.a).

Fig. 5.3.4.a Word play & mind mapping by one of the groups (Source: Researcher)

Stage 2: Student teams were asked to select one or two words from this Word Play and evolve design concepts from the same (see fig. 5.3.4.b).

Fig. 5.3.4.b Design concept evolution (Source: Researcher)

Observations: Since the beginning of the workshop we were stressing on the use of intangible words and ideas. However, since the time duration available was limited, we were not able to give feedback and rectify the tangible ideas used by students. Hence, overall, the design output of the workshop was below satisfactory.

Observations: The young faculty members did make a sincere attempt at the 3D interpretation of the selected words. However, few of them tended to go too philosophical in their concepts while some of them went towards very typical or symbolic interpretations of the words. The 3D forms in both these cases were not very satisfactory. Less than half of the participants were able to interpret the words into abstract and interesting 3D forms. Also, as faculty we did not stress enough the generation of ‘spaces’ or ‘volumes’. Hence, overall, it was found that the outputs, though interesting, would not be very useful towards generation of architectural forms. Studio 6 Design of comfort house: Conducted for young faculty at NIASA, Pune, August 2012 Creative thinking technique used: 6 thinking hats Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe, Atula Patwardhan, Lakshmi Rao Objective: To identify interesting facets related to a residence and to evolve a design for a residence reflecting those facets. Stage 1: The activity of 6 Thinking Hats was conducted wherein words and ideas (facets) associated with each thinking hat were listed out (see fig. 5.3.6.a).

Fig. 5.3.6.a Six Thinking Hats exercise conducted at the beginning of the design activity (Source: Researcher)

Stage 2: Participants were then asked to select one or two interesting facets and evolve a design concept based on the selected facets (see fig. 5.3.6.b). Most of the groups ended up doing mind mapping of the selected facets at the beginning of the design process.

Fig. 5.3.6.b Mind mapping of selected facet and evolved design concept (Source:Researcher)

Observations: The participants fared well till the stage of generation of facets/words. But when it came to the interpretation of the words into concepts, majority of the groups were in a hurry to finalize the form. They did not give due time to the exploration of concepts from the selected facets and missed this vital step in their design process. As a result, even though they had selected interesting words, their design still fell into typicalities of design. Also, this exercise was a good example that students/participants many times have preconceived notions about design and these notions override the instructions issued to them. It was seen that some of the groups, in spite of having interesting identified facets, somehow veered to typical architectural terminologies. Hence their design concept was found to be missing and the design output was extremely mundane. Only one group did extremely satisfactory work.

Studio 7 Design using Analogy: Conducted for students of 3rd Sem. 2012 at SMMCA Creative thinking technique used: Synectics Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe Objective: To use analogy as an inspiration, and generate 2D and 3D composition from mutually contradictory pair of words. Stage 1: Students were asked to select a domain of their choice, for e.g. music, dance, nature, drama, etc. They were to then generate mutually contradictory situations within that domain, for e.g. in drama – calm vs. harsh, tragic vs. comic, etc (see fig. 5.3.7.a). Stage 2: The most interesting pair of mutually contradictory words was to be interpreted as a 2D composition and then reinterpreted as a 3D composition (see fig. 5.3.7.b)

(Source: Researcher)

Observations: This studio yielded very good results. Learning from the previous such studio conducted for the 2nd sem. Students, I was able to issue better and clearer instructions regarding the expectations from the 2D and 3D compositions. Students initially found it very difficult to interpret the intangible words into 2D compositions. Then I discussed with them regarding the inherent qualities of various graphical elements and how the character of the graphical element could be used to convey desired meaning. Once they started doing it students opened up and started enjoying the process. The overall output of the students was very satisfactory and there was a marked improvement in the percentage of students who did good work as compared to the previous similar studio.

Mural Design: Conducted for students of 1st Sem. 2012 at SMMCA

Creative thinking technique used: Brainstorming

Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe, Priya Choudhary, Atula Patwardhan

Objective: To understand the interpretation and manifestation of intangible words in

the form of a graphical composition, to be subsequently evolved into design of a mural.

Stage 1: Teachers conducted a brainstorming session to come up with a list of intangible

words. 11 intangible words were finalized – Motion, Illusion, Happiness, Harmony,

Peace, Freedom, Rhythm, Connectivity, Confusion, Unity & Dominance.

Stage 2: Students were formed into groups and each group was asked to a word select

from the list. The groups then had to conduct a brainstorming session and generate

ideas for a 2D composition which reflected the selected word. The composition then was

evolved into the mural (see fig. 5.3.8).

Fig. 5.3.8 The 2D composition for the word ‘Freedom’, evolved into the mural (Source: Researcher)

Observations: Even though the students were given intangible words to begin with,

when interpreting into a 2D composition students fell into the habit of using symbolic

representations - like use of ‘smileys’ to depict happiness, use of ‘dove’ and ‘olive

branch’ to depict peace, use of a human figure with raised hands to depict freedom, etc.

Students had to be steered away from these typical representations and asked to depict

the words in abstract form, after which students came up with very good compositions.

Overall, the students did very satisfactory work.

Sculpture Design: Conducted for students of 1st Sem. 2012 at SMMCA

Creative thinking technique used: Mind mapping

Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe, Priya Choudhary, Atula Patwardhan

Objective: To design a sculpture for a given location such that the concept of the

sculpture would be suitable for the location

Stage 1: Students were given a choice of 5 locations within the college campus.

Stage 2: They were to select one of the locations and generate ideas using mind

mapping with the particular location as the center of the mind map. The most

interesting idea was to be evolved into the design concept for the sculpture

(see fig. 5.3.9).

Fig. 5.3.9 Two of the sculpture designs (Source: Researcher)

Observations: With the introduction of a site for the sculpture, there was increased

complexity in the design. Also, we had lesser time than desired allotted for this studio

and hence were not able to give desired feedback to the designs. Hence some of the

sculptures went in the direction of typical symbolic representations. Overall the output

of this studio was below expectations.

Abstract painting: Conducted for students of 2nd Sem. 2012 at SMMCA

Creative thinking technique used: Emotions as inspiration

Studio conducted by: Sampada Peshwe

Objective: To understand the interpretation of intangible emotions in the form an

abstract composition.

Students were taken to an outdoor location within the campus and asked to tap into

their emotions at that point of time. They were explicitly asked not to copy their physical

surroundings, but rather identify the effects the surroundings were having on their

emotions and represent the emotions in the form of an abstract painting.

(see fig. 5.3.10).

Fig. 5.3.10 Few of the abstract paintings inspired by emotions (Source: Researcher)

Observations: The out-of-classroom setting and scope for emotional thinking resulting in

freedom from typical design constraints probably helped give the desired impetus

towards good outputs. As a result, majority of the students did excellent work in this

design activity.

drawing, making the layout, transporting the materials to respective locations and actually

building the structure. The activity was conducted under the supervision of the in-charge

faculty and expert masons.

Construction yard activity

Academic session 2014-15

As a part of the college’s ‘Experiential Learning Process’ a unique series of experiments was conducted

at Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture, Nagpur. The usual practice is that architects

design on paper and the designs are brought to life on site by the skilled and unskilled workforce. In this

construction yard activity students designed the structures as well as became the hands that built the

structures. The faculty in-charge of this activity was Ar. Sujata Godbole and Ar. Sampada Peshwe.

The project was to design and build informal seating areas around the coffee kiosk located in the college

campus. These seating areas would also be used as informal outdoor teaching spaces. The designated

area for construction around the kiosk is full of teak trees and students were encouraged to address the

presence of trees and to design with the trees as focal points or vital elements in their design.

This activity was Conducted on 6th & 7th Feb. 2015. The design task was assigned to all 4th year students

and four best designs were selected. The selected students were designated as leaders of the groups.

Students of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year were involved in this activity. A vertical division into four groups was

created among the classes to foster interaction among the classes. Three groups worked on the

execution of the informal seating areas whereas the remaining group worked on roofing of the seating

areas.
