SQUEAK! Our speaker this week was Dr. Elizabeth Novack, Ph.D. She is the Superintendent for the Anaheim Union High School District. Dr. Novack let us know how the high school district was doing by showing the results of last week’s visit by California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson. He was quoted in the Orange County Register with the byline, “State School chief: Anaheim school should be “cloned.” Torlakson was impressed by his visit to Savanna High School. They were recently honored with an Outstanding Program Award from the Orange County Engineering Council for their MESA program (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement). Dr. Novack and the Public Information Officer, Pat Karlak provided handouts and a verbal overview with a PowerPoint presentation that outlined the significant achievements at each high school in the district. Their community outreach efforts to create strong partnerships and increase parental involvement were highlighted. Dr. Novack was quick to thank Anaheim Rotarian, Dr. Ellen Curtin, Magnolia School District Superintendent, for her excellent work with her Pre-K through 6th grade students. These students feed into the high school district after completing their elementary and middle school educational requirements. Dr. Novack expressed thanks to the Anaheim community that helped her succeed as she grew up and graduated from Anaheim High School a few years ago. Dr. Novack’s passion for the City of Anaheim is apparent and her professional duties run very deep in our commu- nity. The students are the beneficiaries of her efforts. The collective work of the district’s dedicated staff and teachers provide excellent development for our students. Sounds like Dr. Novack is a great candidate to be an Anaheim Rotarian! “Anaheim Rotary: Service to Youth and Our Community”. Blind and visually impaired students learn best when their parents and teachers are highly trained and know how to address the unique needs of their students. We are committed to being a primary source of assistance and training for our parents and teachers, and a strong partner with collaborating agencies and employers.Additionally, we focus on providing access to and training in all aspects of technology and on transition programs that will assist our youth with independent living, self-advocacy and vocational skills. All of our programs are designed to enhance our students’ core skills so they may attain their goals of independence. These fundamentals include Braille literacy, socializa-tion skills, orientation and mobility, daily living skills and access technology. On May 13th you are encouraged to come and see Alicia Cerna, Youth Consultant, Thomas Olzak, Youth/Career Services Manager, and ‘Wrigley’ Tom's guide dog give this unique presentation about a really inspirational program.
