ABOUT ABSA Enterprise and Supplier Development Expo The Absa Enterprise and Supplier Development Expo was started in 2012 with the aim of facilitating and assisting procurement professionals to better understand the demands placed on them with respect to sourcing local content. Our opening and closing plenaries contain a broad range of content from keynote speeches to panel discussions and are not necessarily related to a specific style of delivery. They are open to all conference delegates and feature world class speakers presenting on topics that apply to both public and private sector alike. Plenary sessions are typically scheduled to start off the day and after which delegates split in their respective streams in the later half of the day.

• SA business environment is about Adapting. Presentations centred around demands that procurement should support economic development and help to address social challenges.
• Business was encouraged to adapt and understand METOO– Markets, Ethics, Transparency, Optionality and Organisational alignment. The presentation focused on enormous geographic and economic shadows our organisations’ now cast and leave our businesses far more exposed to risk.
• The new term on the block is the implementation of “COMMERCIALITY” in procurement. But why does it matter? The global economy relies in large part on complex supply chain networks, which facilitate trade and keep businesses competitive. CPOs and Supply Chain Executives must realise the commercial significance of their decision to the organisation. Strategies that are based on traditional practices will simply become irrelevant.

• The Opening Debate produced a real platform for practitioners to realise the need to link Legislation and on-the-ground operational realities. Seemingly conflicting legislation were unpacked and Practical application of current legislation governing SCM explored to really understand the realities of compliance costs.
• Public sector procurement business design: A case study driven presentation that left the crowed amazed by the many areas that they needed to focus on in terms of understanding the business case for public sector market, understanding the supply chain, understanding your suppliers from both a theoretical and legal perspective. It was all about rethinking the SCM approach.
• Defining the R in SRM: The presentation highlighted the strategic importance of planning and managing all interactions with suppliers in order to maximise the value of those interactions. When well optimised, SRM creates closer, more collaborative relationships with key suppliers in order to uncover and realise new value and reduce risk of failure.
• Defining Value: Understanding the funding scenario of government: The presentation unpacked key institutional drivers that may contribute to improving public sector efficiency and focuses on one of them in more detail: performance information and its role and use in the budget process (“performance budgeting”).
• LOCAL GOVERNMENT KEYNOTE ADDRESS: What is the best fit SCM strategy for local government? In short, comply to deliver. Comply with integrity, deliver with efficiency.

• Opening panel discussion by senior procurement leaders on commerciality. The discussion centred on what “Commerciality” will mean for procurement functions in 2016, and beyond, in order to deal with ever changing forces affecting their organisations
• A top question answered in this stream was: Why do organisations underestimate the true cost of MRO? A research based presentation on outcomes by the Manchester Business School focusing on the complexity of MRO procurement which now demands that organisations investigate the amount of time spent sourcing items that are of relatively small value, both individually and in total. These process costs are largely invisible, and therefore tend to be underestimated or even ignored, but can be significant.
• Why you should be interested in your supplier’s performance? Question answered through a Panel discussion about CREATING THE PERFECT CIRCLE by marrying strategic sourcing with supplier development. Discussion was really about finding a reliable and competitively-priced supplier and how to develop and implement an evaluation process to help you reduce costs, lower risk, and improve both the performance of your company and your suppliers.
• International panel discussion that focused on Procurement Maturity and unpacking traditional performance vs strategic value addition. The panel drew attention on some common challenges that all procurement teams face, as they evolve and mature, and organisations typically fall under one of three primary stages on the maturity curve: the reactive stage, the proactive stage or the strategic joint value stage.

THE CONFERENCEABSA ENTERPRISE & SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT GROW2015 saw the 3rd annual Absa Enterprise Development “GROW” conference. This dedicated enterprise development conference was attended by corporates throughout South Africa. The conference included an International keynote Case Study in “supplier diversity in america - lessons learnt”.
HIGHLIGHTS• Investing and creating a truly perfect ESD strategy that factors risk and deliver a competitive advantage in all structures
of the value chain can be daunting. The STREAM OPENER PANEL: COMPETITIVE: Enhancing the competitive advantage of sustainable ESD by driving commerciality an all structures of the value chain highlighted how Enterprise and Supplier development should lead to improvements in the total added value from the supplier in question in terms of product or service offering, business processes and performance, improvements in lead times and delivery
• Beyond compliance – Case study session showed a practical real life story from an organisation that implemented ESD prior to the codes. Delegates saw first-hand the challenges and opportunities pursued in the quest to enhance a competitive advantage through ESD initiatives.
• There is an urgent call for industry-wide collaboration. The COLLABORATION PANEL DISCUSSION showed the significance of creating the ideal cross pollination system for ESD Ecosystems and Collaboration of Industries. Also highlighted was what industries do to collaborate more, share not just success stories of working ESD, but also failure stories of what went wrong.
• How do you measure the long term success of an ESD strategy and programme? The new Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) scorecard requires a completely new way of thinking by Supply Chain and Procurement professionals. The way in which companies have approached Preferential Procurement in the past is simply no longer relevant. At best it may result in slight improvements in B-BBEE compliance from a very low base. Innovative, strategic thinking is now required. The panel discussion answered: Are you focusing on the scorecard more than you are on deliverables? What is the business case for ESD? How can you consistently identify and evaluate ESD risks to create opportunities and fortify strategy?
• Understanding why managing ESD from top to bottom and creating executive buy-in is essential to transform and grow the economy of South Africa highlighted the need for senior management and executives to be more passionate about ESD.

SUPPLIER MATCHUP SESSIONSuccessful entrepreneurs know that the lifeblood of their business is found in making the right connections to escape the loneliness of being a solopreneur. “The Smart Procurement event was absolute worth the money
I have spend to exhibit. The contacts that I have made with
Business South Africa was outstanding. I would definitely
exhibit next year again with more personal supplier match up sessions. It will be great is Smart Procurement can assist more with
this match-up sessions before the conference. This has been
valuable for me at Cherry Moss.”
