Annual Review 2012 – Inspiring Change

“The value comes from the quality of their architecture” – Independent Client Quote 2011

2011 has been a positive year. Rated in the top 15% of financially performing architects by Dunn and Bradstreet, we are a stable and robust organisation.

Our success is down to three factors - the quality of our architectural solutions; our dedicated approach to quality management and the talent and commitment of our staff.

Through a holistic approach and our talented team we continue to inspire change towards truly sustainable developments. Throughout 2011 we have completed some exciting projects such as the esteemed environmental retrofit project with LBBD, Colne and Mersea, where we have remodelled two tower blocks preparing them for the impact of future climate change; a brand new 3FE primary school, Colindale School, with Kier London; the first three phases of five at Stonegrove Estates with Barratt Homes; a fabulous extra care facility in Hackney for Newlon and a joint venture residential and mixed use development with the YMCA and L&Q in Dartford to name a few.

Our commitment to client and quality management has helped us to add value; create new business opportunities for our clients and find the right solution for all.

“Sprunt know the business, so there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. They’re not pretentious and they’re responsive to clients’ need. They don’t dumb down but they do understand the constraints. The trick is to achieve high quality design and

performance in tight fiscal circumstances – that to me is a good architect! “ Independent Client Quote 2011

Our staff have delivered the high standards of quality we expect. Through their dedication we have developed a strong client base and an excellent pipeline of work in the UK and internationally. In the UK, we continue to win large scale and complex community led residential developments; a wide range of state and independent school projects; elderly care and special needs and the third sector. Internationally we continue to expand on the good work generated through our South African office, where we have recently completed a new Government conference centre in Tanzania and a new Hotel and Conference Centre in Ndola, Zambia.

We are confident and excited about the future.

Our commitments for 2012

We will continue to invest in creating an organisation with strong foundations which will thrive 20 years from now and beyond. Sprunt’s six core foundations are fundamental to achieving this success:

Intelligent and inspired design

Sprunt is an organisation that has created new communities with a strong sense of identity for those who live and work there. Through our care, dedication and thorough approach to design, we have inspired change and developed vibrant, safe, secure and dynamic places that will endure.

For 2012, we will:

• Deliver excellence in regeneration, creating exemplar developments for future reference in the UK and abroad;

• Lead the way in innovative design, seeking the right solutions for each client;

• Continue to take a holistic approach to design, where our solutions focus on maximising the social, economic and

environmental capital of every development;

• Raise the profile of our landscape team’s significant contribution to successful masterplans and developments;

• Build a client base which gives the Sprunt team an opportunity to create value through design.

Concept to completion

We aim to work with our clients through every stage of the design process because this is where we can make a difference when creating enduring and affordable solutions. With three design studios we have the infrastructure to support our clients at every stage of design and construction.

For 2012, we will:

• Continue to invest in each of our architectural studios, where each team has a blend of experienced

masterplanners; urban designers; concept designers and technicians;

• Stay ahead by always offering something different, adding value through innovation;

• Expand the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM), promoting its use on all of our projects;

• Challenge the status quo to ensure every avenue has been explored; everyone has been heard and a collaborative

approach to design is achieved;

• Be proactive in seeking projects where we work with our clients from concept through construction.

Our commitments for 2012

Commitment to clients

In 2011 Sprunt carried out an independent client satisfaction study. The majority of those interviewed (92%) said Sprunt is a forward thinking and progressive practice with design flair. The most rewarding outcome has been the change in perception from a ‘just a production information architect’ three years ago to a ‘practice with creativity and design flair’.

For 2012, we will:

• Continue to listen hard to our clients, understand them, work with them, manage them;

• Implement our improved approach to project delivery, where each Board Director is responsible for ‘perfect

delivery’ and understands the commercial pressures of our clients;

• Keep our project processes under continuous review and monitor them through ISO9001 and ISO14001 audits.

Nurturing and investing in our people

We have a team of loyal staff who have been with us for over 10 years and this experience is invaluable to our clients and to us. This year we will further enhance our design capacity by appointing a senior designer with international experience of complex buildings to support our Executive Chairman and Design Director.

For 2012, we will:

• Reinforce the importance of design through the appointment of a Design Manager at a senior level;

• Raise the profile of our mentoring programme where knowledge is shared throughout the organisation and our

staff’s ambitions, concerns and challenges are heard;

• Transfer knowledge through a structured internal CPD programme which is given by staff to staff;

• Make Sprunt (the organisation) an environment where the staff share success financially and professionally.

3

Commitment to the environment

Sprunt’s outstanding contribution to environmental design was overwhelmingly highlighted in our 2011 client study. We received many excellent quotes which showed that our investment in focused and affordable environmental design is worthwhile.

“Sprunt are seen as a forward thinking practice by the market and by construction companies: one to the first to push sustainable buildings and environmental credentials”

Independent Client Quote 2011

For 2012, we will:

• Continue to invest in our staff so they are at the forefront of environmental design, understanding the latest in

innovative, practical and affordable solutions;

• Carry out post occupancy reviews, to understand the strength of our solutions;

• Review, learn and improve on all projects, disseminating tried and test techniques from project teams to the

whole organisation.

Financial stability

The past few years have seen increasing downward pressure on fee levels which has concerned us in relation to the quality one can provide at that level. However, our strategy is to work closely with our clients to determine a package which suits them, providing the right price and the right service through accurately establishing then interpreting the brief.

For 2012, we will:

• Encourage our clients to employ Sprunt on projects which are taken through to construction - a process which

provides financial benefit to both our clients and our organisation;

• Achieve a turnover in excess of £3m for 2012;

• Review the profitability; management and delivery of each project through a rigorous portfolio review each

month with our Managing Director;

• Reduce our exposure to the UK market by expanding our projects overseas, in particular in south and east Africa

from our office in Johannesburg, and through our collaboration agreement with architects such Urban Square

in New Dehli and White Arkitekter in Sweden.
