Meet the Designers – Corby Tindersticks Firstly, tell us who you are! I have always loved sewing and making things, even lentils can look beautiful with some glue and paper! I went to Art college where my tutor advised me to stop dabbling in Fine art and take the textiles course, I then went on to do a degree in textile design and a Masters in Illustration (I couldn't decide between the 2!) I worked for a couple of high street retailers designing children's wear but I knew I wouldn't last very long as I always wanted to do my own thing! I am currently based in Birmingham, not sure how long for, I'm a Yorkshire lass so I do spend a lot of time travelling up and down the country!
Chicken or Egg - What made you choose to design for children, or did your illustrative background dictate your direction?I've always doodled characters and used bright colours in my design, designing for children allows a lot of freedom, especially not having to worry about being on trend! There are a lot of lovely kids brand that combine great garments with illustration, perfect for me really . I don't like to follow trends and a lot of my designs are inspired by my own childhood, so to answer I'd say egg. How did the name Corby Tindersticks come about?Cate, Caroline, Carla, I've been called a lot of different names, I think it's my northern accent! Being called Corby really stuck with me as I wasn't aware this was even a human’s name. When it came to choosing a name for one of my hand made characters I remembered Corby, he then became my favourite and the lead character for my brand. I choose Tindersticks after hearing a discussion on the radio about what a cool word it is, it seemed to fit nicely with Corby and fit the quirky British vibe of the brand. Small but ready to set the world on fire, not literally. What are your inspirations?Lots of things inspire me, industrial landscapes, kitsch, comedy shows, Wes Anderson films! I love the work of Italian futurist Bruno Munari, he has been a big influence on my work, especially as he had a great sense of humour and designed for both adults and children, I like that he didn't dumb down his design for kids. I like things that are different to the norm, anything with strange colours or a zany character, outsider and unpolished art inspires me. I enjoy design that evokes a sense of fun or nostalgia.
