MIXIN’ IT UP: Bill Mixon is supposed to be retired. “Whenever a tractor goes missing, we know that he’s got it and is out there doing something, whether pulling up trees, planting or spraying,” says his daugh-ter-in-law, Janet Mixon, who co-owns Mixon’s Fruit Farms with her husband, Dean. “You can’t keep him out of the grove. It’s in his blood.” Mixon’s is also famous for its orange-and-vanilla swirl ice cream, which Courtney Schultz took advantage of while visiting with her brother, Colton, and their parents. Also make sure to stop by the garden, which Janet Mixon says is home to the largest koi pond in the country.

THE InCREdIblE jOuRnEy: On the afternoon of June 7, Millie Somers peered out of her window as a black limousine pulled in front of her house. Thinking the driver was lost, she opened the door, only to hear him exclaim, “Mrs. Somers, I’m here to pick you up!” It was Millie’s 60th anniversary with her husband and high school sweetheart, John, whom she met at a football game in Michigan. Her children had organized the anniversary celebration, which included the limo ride, photos at Lido Beach and dinner at The Columbia Restaurant, on St. Armands Circle. “The kids outdid them-selves,” Somers said. “We had seven days of nothing but celebrations. It was like getting married all over again.”
