DESCRIPTION

A collection of experimental and typographic sprints, or designs composed in 30 minutes or less.

TRANSCRIPT

I will not lie, at first I was not to keen on the idea of working with the same type in the same typeface in a square. It reminded me of a project I did in my 101 design classes. I was hesitant and reluctantly did the work.

The following four images were my first designs. I was not very inspired and did not know what I wanted to do. I spent most of my thirty minutes staring at the screen. My lack of inspiration led me to be unhappy and frustrated with these pieces.

ROUND ONE // HESITATION

ROUND TWO// EMBRACE THE PROJECT

Though I was still slightly uninspired, I be-gan to embrace this project a little more and started to have fun. To make things a little more interesting, I gave myself a side goal. Each piece would have some sort of narra-tive, whether it was taken directly from the Missed Connection or I applied my own story.

ROUND THREE// NOW WITH IMAGES

This is where I started having some real fun! Basing my photo grids on images I really enjoyed made creating this compositions so much easier. A still from Fargo with Steve Buscemi, a unicorn, and a hobbit hole were my images of choice. Using non-traditional grids allowed me to loosen up and do things I usually wouldn’t do.

ROUND FOUR// DESCRIPTORS

The next three designs were based on the words quiet, loud, and illegible. There are not my best, but they are certainly better than my first three.

ROUND FIVE// BRING ON THE SALMON

As soon as we were allowed to add colour, I started looking for the perfect colour. I flipped through books, looked at magazines, and shuffled through my DVD collection trying to find the perfect hue. While thumbing through a specimen booklet for Neenah Papers, I came across a salmon pink that was scream-ing my name. I did my best to recreate that colour in this collection.

Working with colour was interesting. Primarily using opacities and multiple layers, I made my one colour look like many.

My best pieces came about in this round. I had totally abandoned a grid system, but when I was really stuck, I returned to using images to help me along.
