Welcome from Chris HolmesDirector of Northamptonshire Sport We believe high quality PE and School Sport should play a crucial part in the lives of all our young people. We launched the PE and School Sport Strategy twelve months ago and together have set the ambitious target to have the best PE and School Sport system in the country. This also underpins our mission for Northamptonshire to become a fitter, more active and successful sporting County by 2020.

The five School Sport Partnerships led by a passionate team of School Sport Managers continue to work closely with over 250 schools. Developing bespoke packages of support, the team implement national policy locally including the development of Change4Life Clubs, the Sainsbury’s School Games programme and guidance on the Primary PE and Sport Premium. I’m sure with your support, the magazine will grow to provide a colourful and inspirational insight into PE and School Sport in Northamptonshire. We recognise the huge part played by teachers, teaching assistants, parents and volunteers to our work and look forward to sharing your news to a wider audience.

Primary School Conference 2014After the success of the 2013 conference, this year’s conference focused on how schools can “Develop an inclusive approach to PE, School Sport and physical activity for every child”.

The conference was supported by over 100 local primary teachers and a range of national and local experts in this field.

Key note addresses were provided by Chris Wright, Head of Wellbeing at the Youth Sports Trust, Ronnie Heath, Manag ing Director of Create Development and Julie Rogers, the youngest member of the Great

Britain Paralympic team 2012.A range of workshops allowed delegates to look at ways of engaging the least active, how schools can best use their PE and Sport Premium funding, how School Games Kitemark can be used to advocate for PE within the school, different approaches to adapting lessons in physical education and ways in which intra school competitions can be made inclusive.

Steve Jones, Organiser of the conference said;

“the conference was developed to address issues relating to inclusion with the primary

school PE sector and the workshops delivered provide a mixture of challenge about current practise, guidance on what is expected and a chance for people to really dig into the issues

‘Spirit of the Game’The Sainsbury’s School Games is about creating a positive and rewarding experience for all, and bringing together sport, culture and education.

The ‘Spirit of the Games’ is about the values the School Games should instil in young people through sport and competition and the way in which we communicate these values and involve young people in championing this cause will help to bring the ‘Spirit of the Games’ to life.

The ‘Spirit of the Games’ were developed by young people, these are the 6 values they have identified as being the most important to them in sport:

Sports Crew Leadership DayProject Background

School Sport Partnerships are all funded to develop sports crews for both Primary and Secondary age groups.

In South Northants and Daventry SSP, an inaugural Year 5 Sports Crew day was devised. Delivered at Moulton College on the 25th April 2014, 27 Primary schools provided 120 children who undertook training on media, marketing and Sports Leadership, with the aim of having a cadre of young people in each school developing sporting opportunities at their school.

SSP Host SchoolElizabeth Woodville School (EWS) North is the hub school for the South Northants and Daventry School Sport Partnership (SSP). The SSP office and staff, including the School Games Organiser (SGO) Ed Reeves are based at the school. EWS has a history of excelling at school sport and despite recent challenges (amalgamation for one) the school tries to enter as many competitions as possible and support the SSP as fully as it can. The school, through the PE department, regularly provides an excellent group of leaders who suppor, lead and officiate at competitions, as well as providing free facilities for some Level 2 competitions. The school is endeavouring to increase participation and competitive opportunities in all year groups and in July ran a whole school sports day. EWS continues to engage with its cluster of primary schools and through contributions from these schools, EWS deploys an SSCO to provide an extensive calendar of events and competitions, which includes tag rugby, football and netball. More recently a steering group has been established to enable the further development of the Partnership.

Delivering the ProjectSSP Host SchoolThe day started with an inspirational address from London 2012 Paralympic Team GB Sitting Volleyball Head Coach, Steve Jones, before the children went to two workshops.

In these sessions the children learnt about creating a school sport notice board, how to promote events and activities and how to set up and manage a multi skills festival.

After lunch the children were then given the opportunity to put their skills into practice as they took part in a Multi Skills competition led by the Sports Crew Leaders and ably supported by Young Leaders from Moulton School.

Liam Nicell, Senior Sports Coach at Northamptonshire Sport said

”The young people were fantastic in quickly getting to grips with the format of the multi skills competition and then delivered a great event in the afternoon. I am sure they can all continue to provide excellent activities back at school”.

Project ImpactThe SSP has seen a big increase in the number of activities and clubs being delivered by the Sports Crews, including Level 1 Intra-School sport days, lunchtime clubs and Change4Life clubs. The SSP is utilising Sports Crews at Level 2 competitions and a crew attended the Level 3 event as the SSP Media Team.

The FutureOver the next year, the SSP will run it’s second Sports Crew Leadership day and plans to further support schools to work towards School Games Mark accreditation.

The SSP also plans to support the Sports Crew with the delivery of Level 1 competitions in their schools.

Northamptonshire Sport and Create Development Summer School Transition Programme

Summer School pilot creates successful Transitions.

Everyone involved in education, either as a parent or a teacher, knows that effective transition from primary to secondary education helps pupils settle much more easily into their new school life. Following a £50m investment by Government in 2011, all Secondary Schools can access funding to help pupils on free schools meals and those who have been looked after by the local authority for 6 months.

Northamptonshire Sport, working with Create Development and two local Secondary Schools delivered 3 highly successful Summer Schools. The Summer Schools aimed to introduce pupils to their new school environment, let schools familiarise themselves with some of their new pupils and to improve educational attainment for disadvantaged children.

Ran at Northampton Academy and Friars Academy, the Summer Schools were delivered for two weeks in the summer holidays and a programme was devised that helped to develop the personal and social learning skills that pupils require to be happy and successful learners.

The programme at Northampton Academy utilised student mentors from years 8 – 11, while Friars Academy linked year 9 – 11 pupils to work alongside the tutors and other invited guests, including Team GB athletes. New friends were made as pupils came from many different primary schools to take part.

The change in the new Year 7 pupils was apparent after just 1 day and by the end of 2 weeks all pupils had made significant progress.

‘‘Before summer school I felt nervous about starting school. Now I feel happy that I went and I wish there was another week! I am more confidentaboutcominghereinSeptember,Iam not worried about anything” Year 7 pupil

“I wish that all year 6 pupils could at tend – it wouldbesobeneficialforall!” Teacher

“Theyhavebecomealotmoreconfident, aren’t afraid to speak to new peo ple and do things that they wouldn’t usually do” Mentor

The Summer Schools have demonstrated that by using a range of games and social activities pupils can be effectively supported to bridge that difficult transition period and really enable pupils, parents, teachers and the broader school community to look forward to the new school year.

Sprint will continue to monitor the progress of this years Summer School cohort as they enter Year 7 with renewed confidence and vigour. Summer School

Engaging Young People through Leadership & Coaching SSP Host School

Manor School Sports College is a community focussed Academy. Over 40 community groups use the excellent sports facilities at Manor and the school hosts the School Sport Partnership for Wellingborough and East Northants.

Manor is the lead school for Leadership, Coaching and Volunteering and also a host school for Bikeability, funded by the Department for Transport. This gives 700 young people a year the skills and confidence to ride.

With the Mission Statement ‘Success for All’ the staff work hard to ensure students are continually challenged and a wide range of opportunities is always available. The latest development has been the launch of the partnership with Peterborough United Football Academy.

Engaging Young People through Leadership & Coaching

SSP Host School

Manor School Sports College is the Youth Sport Trust designated Lead School for Coaching, Leadership and Volunteering. Manor successfully applied for funding to deliver a new project designed to develop more young coaches, officials and volunteers with a recognised National Governing Body qualification.

The development of young leaders has been integral to the work of schools and School Sport Partnerships (SSPs) alike for many years. Increasingly, employers are placing more emphasis on such skills and attributes and schools have developed strong programmes to assist leadership development.

Manor School Sports College established a partnership with Northamptonshire Sport’s Coach Development Officer and the 5 SSPs, that oversaw the project to identify high quality young leaders and provide access to scholarships for NGB qualifications. 11 Scholarships were awarded from 16 applications received.

In March 2014, a County Young Coach and Official Conference was delivered for 20 young leaders, with the focus on the further development of our best young leaders through additional training . The day included a motivational speech by Goldie Sayers who spoke about the impact of coaches on her career which has already spanned four Olympic Games.

The project recognises the importance of ongoing support, with additional workshops delivered throughout the academic year. Another aspect to the training was specific event leadership training that has enabled 40 young leaders to deliver 20 new Level 1 competitions.

Gifted & Talented

SSP Host School

Spot light on

Prince William School, Oundle has been host school to Corby, Oundle & Thrapston School Sport Partnership (SSP) since October 2011. It has provided a platform for the local School Games to enhance opportunity for young people.

As a school they became the Youth Sport Trust Water Sports Hub School in May 2012 and have strong links with Oundle Rowing Club alongside other local sports clubs.

The school has a strong history of developing performance pathways for the many gifted and talented athletes within the school as well as supporting the local lower/middle schools embed outstanding Physical Education and School Sports.

Over the last few academic years the school has taught and supported international sailors, volleyball players, athletes as well as many county, regional and national sport stars achieve both their sporting best but also their academic best.

The school also maintains one of the largest Sixth Forms in the county, offering students the opportunity to continue subjects at both A Level and BTEC standards. This has allowed the school to develop outstanding Sports Leaders which serve a wide range of roles within the school and across the community.

With a vision statement of “Dare to Dream” Prince William School encompasses that within Physical Education and School Sport. It is a strong focal point for the partnership and a flagship for Physical Education and School Sport across the north of the county.

Provision for Gifted and talented pupils in PE is limited in the UK, with ad hoc and inconsistent provision.

Corby, Oundle & Thrapston School Sports Partnership (COTSSP)is trialling a project to provide a more consistent programme for those pupils who are gifted and talented.

The Developing Performer Pathway (DPP)is a multi skills based sports programme which brings the very best PE pupils together each week to focus on the development of specific fundamental skills – the ABCs of movement (Agility, Balance and Coordination).

Every pupil in the DPP will test and apply their skills in new sports and environments and get the chance to attend one of three competition days. In the summer the best pupils in the DPP will attend a training camp and receive a further 2 days of coaching and competition.

The DPP will run from two sites, one in Corby and one in Oundle, initially catering for Year 4 pupils. Further plans will see the DPP cater for pupils in years 4 – 7.

An exciting programme that aims to harness the inspiration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Primary Change4Life Sports Clubs engage less active primary aged school children in physical activity and school sport.

Free ResoursesSchool Sport Managers across the county are delivering training and support to establish new clubs that develop a greater understanding of healthy active lifestyles amongst young people.

High quality sports bags have been funded by the Department of Health and are now being distributed to each School Sport Partnership.

ThemesTaking the principles and specific skills from a range of sports, the multi sport themed bags aim to create a fun and vibrant activity club. Each themed bag contains equipment, activity cards, log books and stickers.

The bags come in the following themes:

Adventure Creative Combat Flight Target

TrainingThe Primary Change4Life workshop covers 5 steps to a succesful club;

Recognise - Target - Recruit - Retain - Sustain

These will enable the school to attract less active children and establish a regular culture of attendance and participation.

Satellite ClubsAlmost half of Northamptonshire’s secondary schools have already taken up the offer to host a Satellite Club and each term more and more young people are playing sport in the community as a result.

For example, in November 2013 Elizabeth Woodville School (North) made links with Northampton Nighthawks Badminton Club, launching an informal Badminton Club utilising the Badminton England Programme ‘Smash up’

Over 20 young people attended the first session and 11 months later the Satellite Club is still going strong and attracting many young people who are enjoying playing badminton after school lead by the local commuiity club.

We are looking for more shining examples of great Satellite Clubs to be published in future Spint editions. Email us and tell us more: Felicity Howlett - [email protected]

Sport England is working in partnership with National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) by investing over £49 million of Lottery Funding into the development of Satellite Clubs in schools.

Satellite Clubs are outposts of existing community sports clubs, which are based on school or college sites and help get more young people playing sport.

Satellite Clubs can bridge the gap between school, colleges and community sport. They will enable more young people to try a wider range of sports and create life long sporting habits.

Every secondary school in Northamptonshire will be given the opportunity to host a Satellite Club until 2017 and the process is straight forward;

The school identifies a sport they would like to host

The Club Link Maker identifies a suitable club to deliver the Satellite Club

Almost 100 primary, junior and infant schools have signed up for the first wave of Northamptonshire County Council’s new Healthier Child scheme.

The scheme will see a specialist team work with the schools to start to improve nutrition and activity levels in year five and six children.

Improving nutrition and activity levels can have a positive impact on cognitive ability and behaviour, helping children do better in school in areas such as academic achievement, behaviour and attendance.

Cabinet member for public health and wellbeing Councillor Robin Brown said:

“I’m very pleased that 95 schools have already signed up for this scheme and hope that the rest of the county’s schools follow their example”.

“This is an opportunity for schools to join an innovative approach to improving children’s health and wellbeing, and by being part of it at this early stage, schools will be able to obtain some useful baseline data which will help them to measure their progress in the future.

“The new Healthier Child initiative is just part of the way we are working to help the county’s children and young people be healthier and happier. It will build on the

excellent work already happening through our school nursing service, Northamptonshire Sport, our outdoor learning facilities and our school meals service Nourish, which all play a vital role in supporting the health of our children and young people.”

The Healthier Child scheme follows an announcement earlier this year that the council would be investing in school nursing to increase numbers from current levels (50.4 whole-time equivalent) to 82 by 2018. This figure includes an increase in specialist community public health nurses, from 16.9 in 2014 to 43 by 2018.

This will help to make the school nursing service more accessible and visible, allowing them to make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of children and young people. The scheme will include activity already taking place through Northamptonshire Sport, who work closely with schools across the county to enhance the quality of sporting opportunities through the curriculum and out of school hours learning, as well as intra and inter school competitions.

Northamptonshire Sport will also be delivering a programme of healthy lifestyle family focussed initiatives from January 2015.

SSP Host SchoolSouthfield School is the hub school for the Kettering School Sport Partnership, hosting the School Games Organiser through whom the school engages with the County Sports Partnership and other sporting bodies.

The school represents education as the county lead for Health and Well-Being. It recently won the Talk Out Loud School of the Year 2014 by demonstrating how it worked towards the key objectives of increasing mental health awareness, drawing attention to the stigma and discrimination experienced by young people with mental health needs and challenging the negative perceptions of mental health. The school has raised awareness amongst their students about mental health issues, stigma and where they can access help and support.

Commitment and choice underpin all the school does in its relationships with the wider community and with students and parents.

Evidencing PE & Sport Premium Impact - Ofsted expectations

Only 43% of schools nationally have submitted PE and Sport Premium

information on their school website. It is a requirement from Ofsted that

all schools have this information online by April 2014

At the start of the 2013 / 2014 Academic year, Primary Schools received a slice of the £150m investment made by Government to develop the provision of PE and School sport within the Primary Sector.

The average sized primary school receives £9250 and Government promised a rigorous Ofsted regime to monitor the impact of the funding. Over the last 12 months, more evidence of what the Inspectors are looking for has emerged. Inspections will focus on:

Improvement in achievement in weekly PE lessons Increase in participation in competitive school sport Improvement in personal health and well being Improvement in attitudes and behaviour towards learning

School leaders and Governors will need to provide a PE development plan, alongside an evaluation of the quality of PE, pupils’ participation in school sport and how the Premium has been used to improve quality of provision within the school.

Inspectors will have increased expectations when observing PE lessons and will ask young people their views on what the school does in the subject.

Examples of how schools have addressed these areas include:1. Schools have used funding to employ specialist PE teachers to deliver PE and mentor and support other staff in the school, thus raising their ability to deliver high quality PE. Other schools have used it to release their existing PE coordinator to lead more work in supporting whole school training, mentoring and development of teachers’ skills and understanding.

2. Locally, there is evidence that more schools are attending more competitions. Thefundinghashelpedschoolsfind ways to get to competitions (by using it to meet transport costs in some cases) andinfindingstafftoattendwith the pupils. New competitions have been introduced by the School Sport Partnerships, as well as clusters of schools getting together for their own locally organised competitions.

3. Schools are investing in programmes such as Change4Life and the emerging 2020 Healthier Child scheme to improve the health and well being of pupils and again, the county’s School Sport Partnership oversee this and can support schools to develop Change4Life Clubs.

4. Attitudes and behaviour have been developed in some schools by broadening the scope of the provision to include all pupils and by bringing in external sports coaches or using teaching assis tants have been able to ensure all pupils take part and are energised by PE activities.

The Youth Sport Trust is working with Northamptonshire Sport to support Primary Schools with the way they implement the Primary School PE and Sport Premium. Support includes access to SSP enhanced packages, YST membership and access to the County School Sport Manager who can advise schools on different approaches.

If you would like to know more about our school swimming service contact Steve Jackson, School Swimming Manager, [email protected]

In 2013, national statistics provided by the ASA placed

Northamptonshire third nationally for our Key Stage 2 swimming

achievements, with 66% of pupils being able to swim 25m or more.

School Swimming is an integral part of the work Northamptonshire Sport undertakes with schools. Our dedicated instructors deliver over 11,000 curriculum hours to 175 primary, secondary and special schools.

Alongside this delivery, the team work with teachers to develop their knowledge and understanding of this specialist curriculum area.

A swimming pool is a very different environment to a classroom and for some this can be daunting. However, with support it can also be a fun and enjoyable place to be for both staff and pupils.

Learning to swim and achieving 25m is but one aspect of the key work done by in schools. Improving awareness around water safety, especially open water is essential, as drowning remains the third most common cause of death in children.

Northamptonshire Sport chairs a county forum, that includes the Emergency Services, that aims to ensure that all those involved in swimming education and water safety have the appropriate levels of equipment and training.

Primary Spaces for SportPrimary Spaces for Sport is a Sport England grant funding scheme that aims to develop primary school PE facilities. 12 Northmptonshire primary schools were successful in receiving a ‘Primary Spaces for Sport’ Funding Award.

The fund aims to help provide outdoor multi-sport areas which can be used both within the curriculum and out of school hours. As well as helping provide sports activities, staff and volunteers at the school will receive information on how best to use the new facilities and equipment to help children get more active.

Priority was given to those primary schools which currently have little or no outdoor space that can be used for PE or sports sessions.

Sprint will be keeping an eye on these developments and reporting back on building progress in the near future.
