Insider InformationYour Sprint Employee Track Pass lets you walk up and down PitRoad before the race. Whether a team wins or loses the race isoften decided on pit road. The next few pages include insiderinformation about what happens on pit road before the racebegins and how the teams prepare for the big race.

NASCAR Changes for 2013 5 facts of the NSCS Generation-6 Car

1.) Brand Identity

Nearly two years in the making, today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars more closely resemble those found on the showroom floor, with eye-catching bodylines and stylish features giving each model its distinctive appearance. Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota are the manufacturers as Dodge will not compete in 2013.

2.) Safety Enhancements

Additions of a forward roof bar and a center roof support bar to the roll cage will reinforce integrity and increase the crush structure of the roof. Larger roof flaps improve liftoff numbers.

3.) Slim and Trim

Total weight of the car has been reduced by 150 pounds (80 less on right side; 70 less on left side). Minimum weight of driver has also decreased from 200 to 180 pounds. All cars must weigh a minimum of 3,300 pounds ready to compete (w/ fuel, oil, water) without driver.

4.) Stamp of Approval

With exception of a carbon fiber rear deck lid and hood, all body panels are now produced and individually stamped by the manufacturer for verification.

5.) Your Name Here

Driver names will be featured on the upper portion of the windshield; sponsor decals and car numbers have been removed from headlight and taillight areas and now appear on front and rear bumpers; also, a single sponsor logo will be permitted on the roof of the cars.

18Pit Road Fast Facts

• Pit stalls are selected based on qualifying results. The fastestqualifier selects the location of their pit stall first and the remainder of the field follows.

• Crew members spray the ground of their pit stall with soda orjuice to help provide more traction for their members and carduring pit stops.

• On a four-tire stop, the team will attempt to change all four tiresand fill the car with 17.75 gallons of fuel in 12-16 seconds. Manyraces have been won or lost based on pit stop results.

• Crew chiefs make the crucial decision whether to do a two orfour-tire stop, or stop for fuel only.

• Only 6 crew members are allowed over the wall during a pitstop. The over the wall crew consists of the front tire changer, front tire carrier, rear tire changer, rear tire carrier, jack man, andgas man.

• Each pit stop is recorded and reviewed to identify mistakes, areas for improvement and exceptional performances. Smallcameras are located above the pit stall to catch all of the action.

• The pit wagon or “war wagon” holds all the necessaryequipment needed to repair the car in the event of a crash. Forheavily damaged stock cars, the team will have to take the carto the garage for repairs.

• Pit road speed is determined by NASCAR and is different fromtrack to track - it can be as slow as 30 mph at short-trackssuch as Bristol and Martinsville, and as fast as 55 mph atsuperspeedways such as Pocono and Talladega. NASCAR rulesallow for a 5-mph buffer over the posted speed limit. If a driveris caught speeding on pit road, they are penalized and mustpass through pit road on the next lap causing them to losevaluable positions.

Page 20: Sprint Employee Race Guide - Zeta Globalimg.delivery.net/cm50content/18861/24679/9107_NSCS...Sprint FanWalk is an interactive area in the infield of the track that lets you see inside

19 • Sunoco is the official fuel of NASCAR. The gas is regulated byNASCAR and free to all teams. The gas cans are taken to thefueling station and refilled after each pit stop. NASCAR SprintCup Series cars do not have fuel gauges, therefore, the teamwill measure the amount of fuel put into the car during eachstop by weighing the remaining fuel from each dump can. Byknowing the weight per gallon of gas, a team’s crew chief candetermine how many laps the car can run before it isnecessary to make another fuel stop.

• Often during the race, celebrity guests sit on pit boxes.Celebrity NASCAR fans have included Tom Cruise, PatrickDempsey, Angie Harmon, Tim Tebow, Bubba Watson, NickLachey, Sophia Vergara and Adam Sandler.

Page 21: Sprint Employee Race Guide - Zeta Globalimg.delivery.net/cm50content/18861/24679/9107_NSCS...Sprint FanWalk is an interactive area in the infield of the track that lets you see inside

20Tires

• Each team has crew members dedicated specifically to tireissues, as tires are such a crucial part of a car’s handling.

• Teams pay nearly $1,700 a set for Goodyear tires ($421 each).

• A team will typically use from 8 to 14 sets of tires per race.

• All tires that will be used for this race are treadless, which iswhy the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series does not race in the rainon oval shaped tracks like Kansas Speedway.

• At tracks one mile or greater in length, teams are required torun an “inner liner” as a safety precaution.

• Tires are delivered filled to standard PSI. The teams then bleedsome of the air and replace it with nitrogen, which is morestable at higher temperatures and allows the tire to retain itscircumference as it heats up.

• Racing tires have an average life of 150 miles, but that variesgreatly depending on track length and pit strategy.

Page 22: Sprint Employee Race Guide - Zeta Globalimg.delivery.net/cm50content/18861/24679/9107_NSCS...Sprint FanWalk is an interactive area in the infield of the track that lets you see inside

21Communication

• Drivers and their crew chiefs are able to communicate duringthe race via assigned radio frequencies.

• In addition to talking with their crew chiefs, drivers are also incommunication with their “spotter”, a team member who sitsabove the racetrack and is responsible for alerting the driverand crew of potential track issues.

• Listen to a team's in-car audio on your Sprint device bydownloading the NASCAR Mobile '13 application in the AppStore or Google Play.

Engines

• At the beginning of the 2012 season, NASCAR required thatall NASCAR Sprint Cup Series engines use fuel injection.

• Some benefits of NASCAR’s new fuel injection enginesinclude increased engine efficiency and greater control offuel consumption.

22Fun Facts

• During weekends, most drivers spend their time in their motorhomes in the restricted Driver/Owner Motorhome lot. This area is located to the left of the NASCAR Sprint CupSeries garage at Kansas Speedway.

• NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars do not have headlights, butrather headlight stickers.

• In-car temperatures often reach above 130 degrees and only the driver’s helmet is air-conditioned.

• Drivers can lose 5 to 10 pounds during a race through sweat.

• Richard Petty is credited with inventing the window net to helpkeep drivers arms inside the car to avoid injuries during a crash.

• In the turns, NASCAR drivers can experience 3 G’s of forceagainst their bodies, comparable to the forces pressing downon shuttle astronauts at liftoff.

• SAFER barriers, which NASCAR has installed at most tracks, reduce crash impacts on drivers by 70 percent or more. SAFERstands for "Steel and Foam Energy Reduction."

• One of Mark Martin’s hobbies is flying, and he often flieshimself to races instead of hiring a pilot.

• Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has a replica of a Western town (known asWhiskey River) on his 140-acre homestead, complete withsaloon, vintage gas station, 18 go-karts and a six-hole, par-3golf course in Kannapolis, NC.

24Track Vocabulary

Drafting – The first car cuts through the air and creates lessresistance for the rear car. All cars following the lead car will catchthe “draft” and will run faster as the air is flowing over the cars.Loose –When the rear tires lose traction before the front tires do,causing the car to want to spin out.Tight –When the car wants to drive straight rather than turn. Thedriver must work harder to make the car turn. This condition, as wellas a “loose” condition, can often be adjusted during a pit stop. Groove – The preferred driving lane through the turn. There may bea high groove and/or a low groove.Lucky Dog – The first car one lap down to the leader during a caution period is allowed to make up his lap and join the lead lapcars as the last car on the lead lap. Spotter – Team member(s) located on top of the grandstandsallowing him/her to see the entire track.
