Sprint 3 L. 1X

Target: Expressing likes and dislikes at different levels. Do you like..? I love it. I hate it. It’s OK. I don’t like it. Etc.

Warm-up: Stress practice (from the textbook). Use Appendix 1A. Show a pair of the same word, and ask, “Is it clAssical? Or classIcal? Get them to

choose which stress sounds right. If they get it right, give them a coin and see who gets the most.

Presentation: Use the “Classical” card and ask, “Do you like classical music?” Draw a happy face, OK face, and an unhappy face and get them to

choose. Can you tell me in a sentence? Show Appendix 1B face cards and get students to match with the expression cards. Get the student to

ask another student. Present the target.

Mechanical: Use Appendix 1C to practice questions. Do you like classical music? Use Appendix 1B to practice answers. I love it. Get them to

repeat after you. Make corrections until they can produce the sentences correctly and smoothly.

Meaningful: Use Appendix 1B & 1C and ask the same questions in chain. Put Appendix 1B in a pile. Put Appendix 1D face up so you can see all

the cards. First you ask the question by picking up a card from the pile. Then Student A answers by finding a matching answer card from

Appendix 1D. For example, “Do you like horror movies?” “Yes, I love it(them)! I love Friday the 13th!” Do you like heavy metal? No, I hate it. I

like jazz.

Communicative: Use Appendix 1C again, but this time, students answer truthfully. Expand to giving a little more information like, Do you like heavy

metal? No, I don’t. I like Japanese pop music. I like Ayumi Hamasaki. Give 4 cards to each pair and switch after they are finished with the first 4

cards.

Conversation: Pre-listening: Get students to ask each other, “Who are they? Where are they? What are they doing?” Students answer each other’s

questions. Give hints if necessary. Who are they? Are they friends? Business people? Where are they? Are they in an office? Supermarket?

Etc. In-listening: Get them to listen for what topic Machiko and Amy are talking about. Does Machiko like classical music? What does she like?

Post-listening exercise: Do a repeating & shadowing exercise. Get them to reproduce the conversation.

Production: Use Appendix 1E Topic Darts to play darts on the white board with a sticky ball or on the table with a bean bag ball. Get students to ask

each other about anything on the topic. For example, if you land on “food,” you ask something like, “Do you like Korean food?” “Yes, I love it!”

Closing: Do you like English?
