SUMMER IS HERE! LAYERS OF CLOTHING ARE BECOMING FEWER AND THINNER AND FOR MANY THIS IS THE MOMENT THEY HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. THAT TIME OF THE YEAR THAT MAKES CYCLING SO FANTASTIC, LONG SUMMER EVENINGS, THE EARLY MORNING LIGHT, ENTIRE DAYS ON THE BIKE OR COMMUTING IN SHORTS.

After taking a new direction in 2018 in terms of design, this year we are taking another step for-ward. For our summer range, we have designed a number of beautiful collections, through which we offer cyclists comfort at all levels with a choice of different styles. There is, for example, our Essen-tial collection, in which you will find the technical basics that you need as a cyclist. Please don’t confuse basics with ‘ordinary’; all Essential items are made from high-quality technical materials. The Trend collection responds to the current trends and colours, whereas our Six6 collection is a nod to the past with a contemporary twist. The Premium collection is state-of-the-art, where our designers had carte blanche to produce the high-est quality clothing with no compromises.

New this year are our High Summer products, items that keep you nice and cool on hot days or during intensive climbs. In addition, our col-laboration with various top athletes has given us new insights into the wishes of top-level athletes. These are insights that we have introduced in our collections and that are therefore available to everyone.

But for all of our products, we are always on the lookout for the best materials and optimum fit in a widely varying price range, enabling every cyclist to enjoy AGU quality and design.

THE ALKMAARSE GROOTHANDELS UNIE WAS FOUNDED IN 1966, FOLLOWING A MERGER BETWEEN THREE BICYCLE WHOLESALERS. THE COMPANY'S TREMENDOUS SUCCESS AND INTERNATIONAL BREAKTHROUGH FOLLOWED 10 YEARS LATER.

In the early years, AGU traded primarily in parts and accessories for bikes and scooters. In 1974, AGU introduced lightweight bike bags. However, the huge success and international breakthrough came in 1976, when AGU’s rain suit won a design competition launched by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. More than one million of these iconic rain suits were sold throughout Europe – an extraordinary boost for the company.

In 1978, AGU presented its bike racing clothing during a trade fair for cycling, the Tweewieler-RAI. But at that point, the company had already taken its first steps in the world of bicycle racing. The sponsoring of world champion slipstreamer Cees Stam in 1977 was the start of AGU’s many years of high visibility at the top of cycle sport. In 1984, AGU joined forces with the legendary Panasonic team led by Peter Post. Then, in 1990, AGU incorporated Leontien van Moorsel into its team, just days before she won two world championships in Tokyo. After a long and successful stretch sponsoring the Rabobank team from 1996 to 2012, AGU left the professional peloton.

These 40 years of experience at the highest level remain the basis of AGU’s cycling collection today. Fully in line with AGU’s tradition, the range of cycling clothing meets the needs of cyclists and mountain bikers at all levels. On 1 May, three wholesalers in Alkmaar merge: the firms Kerkmeer (Willem Kerkmeer), GOMO (Foppe Bergsma) and Jako (Jaap van den Kommer). Van den Kommer becomes the general manager and they start work in a new building with 14 employees. The Alkmaarse Groothandels Unie is born!

The theme of ‘cycling pleasure’ is launched. From now on, AGU is going to develop products that make cycling more fun. Production starts on lightweight bike bags. The location chosen for production is Japan, which at this time is a low-wage country. The first bags are made by Yashuo Kurata in the heart of Tokyo. Japan’s image is not yet particularly good, partly due to rusty Datsuns and Toyotas, so the ‘Made in Japan’ stickers have to be removed from the packaging once the goods arrive in Alkmaar.

The Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management launches a playful competition to encourage cycling: ‘Who can design the best rain suit?’ Out of 87 entries, most of them from the world of fashion, AGU’s rain suit wins the award. This marks the beginning of an extraordinary boost for the AGU brand and for the company. More than one million AGU-Sport suits are sold throughout Europe.

Team leader Peter Post calls Peter van den Kommer to ask whether Steven Rooks, who is under contract with AGU at this time, can return to be part of the team. In return, AGU will provide clothing for the Panasonic Raleigh team from now on, including a young Erik Breukink among its members.

An old classmate, Anton Duyn, walks into AGU one day and asks why only natural chamois leather is used in racing shorts. He has a bolt of cloth under his arm from the Japanese company Kuraray Co. Ltd. It is a type of imitation leather that up to this point has only been used in the most expen-sive Mercedes models. The first shorts using the imitation natural chamois are made by Moa Sport in Italy and tested by Peter Post’s Panasonic team. AGU is the first company in the world to process artificial chamois padding in the shorts and market them, under the name Nalini.

After dressing the Panasonic, Koga and AGU-Continental teams for many years, a contract is concluded in october 1996 for AGU to act as clothing sponsor for the Rabobank team. The contract will last for a memorable 16 years.

During the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, AGU is the clothing partner for no fewer than 10 national teams. It provides the skating teams of Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Taiwan, Belarus, and Switzerland with the super-fast competition suits from the Netherlands.

With the introduction of the Carbon Fibre chamois in 2011, AGU raises the chamois padding collection to a new, higher level. The chamois is unique due to the use of carbon fibres that provide a better distribution of heat, optimum transport of perspiration moisture and a permanent antibacterial effect. The chamois is notable not only for its comfort, but also for its technical look.

AGU enters into a partnership with BEAT Cycling Club. AGU supports the grand ambitions of the first professional cycling club in the history of cycle sport and contributes towards the club’s further development. AGU is the official clothing supplier for the track team, the road team and club members.

Whereas in the past we were known as the clothing sponsor of mainly the Rabobank and Panasonic teams, nowadays we supply clothing to a wide range of sports teams. One of these teams is BEAT Cycling Club, the professional Track Team in which Theo Bos and others ride in the AGU speedsuit, a suit in which aerodynamics are crucial. We developed this suit in conjunction with BEAT and the success of these suits proves that we have created a successful final product that we can be proud of.

As well as the Track Team, we also provide clothes for the BEAT Road Team. Also riding in the top league in AGU outfits are the teams of Destil-Parkhotel, Vlasman and Swabo. During the beach racing season, Imming’s top team rides in AGU clothing; this team tests our clothing in harsh conditions along the coastline.

A remarkable aspect is that our technology and aerodynamics have been found to be so good that these are now also applied to speed skating, which was not in vain: during the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, no less than ten countries wore AGU speed skating suits, also worn by Bart Swings when he achieved a silver medal.

Of course, all innovations also find their way into the various AGU collections, so that everyone can benefit from these progressive developments in cycling. Whether that is for a top three result on the track or for a Sunday afternoon club ride with friends.

The materials we use at AGU have changed enormously since the launch of our iconic rain suit in 1976. Nowadays we have a wide variety of materials and mixes of yarns at our disposal, each with its own specialisation, so that we can provide each piece of clothing with the most appropriate characteristics.

MERINO WOOL

Merino is a very fine type of wool from the sheep of the same name. This wool has exceptional properties that offer benefits for virtually all sports enthusiasts. Because merino wool is much finer than normal wool, it is soft to the touch and ventilates well, so that you can easily get rid of excess heat. At the same time it insulates better and absorbs perspiration without feeling damp. It therefore keeps you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm. It also dries very quickly and is naturally resistant to odours and bacteria. The material is also UV-resistant.

PORAY

The Poray membrane was developed by us and it ensures 100% water and windproof materials with good breathability. The 10,000-millimetre series is resistant to a water column of no less than 10,000 millimetres. The water column is the amount of water – in millimetres per square centimetre – that can rest on the fabric without leaking through. This membrane also has very good breathability, to keep you nice and dry both on the inside and the outside. As well as the 10,000 series, there is also Poray 5000.

Dark-colored textiles absorb both visible and invisible sunlight, meaning both heat and light. In all types of textiles, coldblack® reduces this absorption of thermal radiation. This function is particiularly effective in the case of darker colors. The result is a noticeably better heat management. In addition, the technologies offer reliable protection from UV rays, which is particularly important for light-colored textiles. A UPF of 30 (minimum) is guaranteed for all colors and textiles, without the feel or look of the product being affected. As a result, textiles with coldblack® can make an effective contribution to protecting against harmful UV rays.

When fabrics are treated with a Durable Water Repellency coating, a layer is created so that (rain)water just rolls off instead of soaking in.

POLYGIENE

Fabrics treated with Polygiene are coated with a layer of silver chloride, which prevents odours from forming during intensive use. Unpleasant odours are created by the bacteria that accumulate in wet or damp clothing when you perspire. Polygiene prevents the accumulation of these bacteria, which keeps clothing odour-free.

TECHNOLOGY

EVENT

The big difference between the traditional breathable and waterproof fabrics and an eVent material is the high degree of breathability. The millions of tiny pores in the eVent membrane work immediately and continuously to remove perspiration moisture, whereas a traditional membrane only begins to ventilate once it has actually become wet. As a result, eVent keeps you dry longer, allowing you to stay warm and comfortable. In our clothing, we use both the windproof and very stretchy DVStrech membrane and the wind and waterproof DVStorm membrane.

BASE LAYERThe primary function of a base layer is to wick away moisture. Whether it’s warm or cold outside, your body loses moisture with physical effort in the form of perspiration. Our base layers wick the sweat away and keep your body dry.

DRESS GUIDE

INTERMEDIATE LAYERThis layer keeps you cool, dry and comfortable by wicking away perspi-ration. On warm and sunny days, the ‘intermediate layer’ can also be the outer layer. So our jersyes are both functional and good-looking.

OUTER LAYERThe outer layer protects your body against a cold breeze or a showery summer rain. The lightweight and breathable fabrics wick away moisture and excess body heat. Our wind jackets and rain jackets can be stowed away easily and compactly in the pockets of a jersey.

The dark fabrics from which bib shorts are usually made absorb heat quickly. That is why, for our High Summer bib shorts, we have used material treated with the revolutionary Coldblack finish, which reduces the absorption of heat radiation, meaning bib shorts made from this material feel almost 5 degrees cooler. In addition, Coldblack blocks UV rays, meaning you are well protected from the sun.

VIGAROUS MIPS HELMET

Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) In a helmet with MIPS Brain Protection System the shell and the liner are separated by a Low Friction Layer. When a helmet with MIPS is subjected to an angled impact, the low friction layer allows the helmet to slide relative to the head. MIPS is designed to add protection in helmets against the rotational motion. The rotational motion is a combination of rotational energy (angular velocity) and rotational forces (from angular acceleration) that both affects the brain and increases the risk for minor and severe brain injuries. MIPS has been scientifi-cally proven to reduce rotational motion when implemented in a helmet by absorbing and redi-recting rotational energies and forces transferred to the brain.

Misconception: standards vs. how you really fall Accident statistics show that many injuries occur due to angled impact to the head. However, in standard helmet tests the helmet is dropped vertically onto a flat surface. The results are helpful for measuring precise vertical impacts, but far inferior for measur-ing the more realistic scenario of an angled impact. MIPS has been developed for reality and increases protection against angled impacts.

RED 120Our RED 120 chamois extends the boundaries of comfortable biking. On both longer rides and with more frequent use, the user benefits from the extremely high shock absorption value of the High-Impact Perforated foam. The chamois is also equipped with 'Skiving' technology that prevents skin irritation using subtle differences in the thickness of the chamois. This made this chamois our testers' absolute favourite. Flexible, comfortable and firm, exactly where it is needed most.

BLACK 320Especially for our Premium and SIX6 collections, we looked for the ultimate chamois for the most discerning cyclists. This was the BLACK 320, which uses the unmatched shock absorption value of the Hybrid Cell System. This padding is thin, light, extremely breathable and sustainably wear-resistant. The top layer of this chamois is made from CoolCube, which prevents irritation and chafing and also wicks perspiration away from the skin, keeping you fresh and dry. This chamois keeps providing comfort and support in the most extreme situations, so that you can cycle for longer and more frequently without discomfort.

GREEN 95The GREEN 95 is the entry-level model for our collection of chamois and it's a good example of a chamois that allows you to cycle longer and further. The chamois is made from fast-drying, comfortable 10-mm foam that offers excellent shock absorption for nearly everyone. With its excellent price/quality ratio, this chamois is the perfect choice for both beginners and frequent cyclists.

We have brought our range of chamois completely up-to-date and to a higher level of quality. We re-examined the needs of the cyclist and the way in which we, as AGU, can ensure that you can be in the saddle for longer and add to your enjoyment. After careful investigation, development and testing, we came up with three new and improved models that provide an option for every cyclist.
