MEMBER BENEFITS GOLDEN TICKET COMPETITION

Watch Chapter’s exclusive video of Emily receiving the good news on our YouTube channel: Chapter London

The golden ticket

What I love most about Chapter is bringing friends here to chill out in all the great social spaces. It’s such a good atmosphere. The events held over the sites are pretty cool too.”EMILY HOPPER

Why did you choose to study in London? London seemed the most exciting place to attend university – there’s so much to do and so many opportunities available here.

Where and how did you hear about Chapter? My friend from Uni had already booked with Chapter and recommended it – she raved about it so I had to check it out for myself. I looked at the website and knew it was where I wanted to be. It seemed so much more professional than the other sites I had looked at previously.

What made you choose Kings Cross? All the Chapter sites looked great, but Kings Cross is moments away from SOAS University and the facilities really amazed me. The gym especially – as I row for my university it is really important I can access the gym easily and anytime – Chapter allows that.

How does Chapter benefit you? The gym here is brilliant and I love being able to come any time, day or night. However, there’s so many facilities here that are so useful – like the cinema and the study rooms. I love going into the study room and just chilling out, it really is an amazing space. I bring my friends back from university sometimes and they love it too.

How do you feel now you’re the Golden Ticket winner? Absolutely amazing! I forgot I had even applied so when I was contacted I was gob smacked. I think I’m still in shock. With the money I’m saving I am now able to intern abroad in India for a month so I’m extremely grateful.

Would you re-book with Chapter next year or recommend to friends? Oh yes I definitely would – it’s so worth it and I already have, I know they’d all love to be here.

Q&A WITH EMILY HOPPER

“I’m gob-smacked, I think I’m still in shock”. Emily Hopper picked up the grand prize

in this year’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired Golden Ticket competition, a year’s free accommodation with Chapter.

We had hundreds of other lucky winners in the competition, launched in 2016, all receiving great experiences and days out across London.

To qualify and be in with a chance of winning the grand prize, you had to have already booked and moved into a Chapter residence and be a full time student over 18 years of age. The lucky winner was then chosen at random in November 2016.

Emily Hopper is a student at SOAS University studying business development studies and lives at Chapter Kings Cross – read on for her interview, covering what she loves about Chapter, how she’s settling in and enjoying student life and most importantly, how she will use the money she’s saved from winning the Golden Ticket.

EVENTS AND NETWORKING EVENTS AND NETWORKING

Throughout the year we host a variety of events for our residents and their guests to enjoy, working with event partners that complement our residents studies and enhance their network.

As well as the odd party or two, we also hold regular fitness classes, mindfulness workshops and shopping trips. Here’s a round-up of some of our favourite events from 2016.

LIFE HACKS: HACKS FOR GETTING HIRED

In October we teamed up with the General Assembly and Welcome

to London to provide a fabulous workshop providing lots of inspiration. Samantha Hepburn of Yuno Juno delivered an animated session packed full of hot tips and hacks to help stand out from the crowd and land that dream job.

INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESSMindfulness is the 21st century answer to managing stress. It is

a therapeutic mind training technique that focuses awareness on the present moment, preventing distractions whilst calmly allowing us to be more assertive in everyday life.

We held our first in a series of workshops at Chapter Spitalfields on Monday 28th November 2016. Our coach, Gaelle Truffigo from The Expand Approach, has attended over 40 retreats and has

taught mindfulness to over 800 people through leading retreats, courses, workshops and classes.

With all those dissertations and exams to prepare for, through these sessions our residents learn valuable life tools to manage everyday challenges and leap over life’s hurdles with confidence.

Want more? We have further Mindfulness

workshops coming up in 2017. Check the event page on our website for dates.

KICKSTART LONDON LAUNCH Back in March last year, Kickstart London approached Chapter

to host their graduation event which gave each of their entrepreneurial teams a chance to pitch to angel investors.

The event went down so well that we decided to team up for their launch event too, which we hosted in November. This year, Kickstart opened their doors to

even more students by organising a cross-university, student-run entrepreneurship programme, where up to ten teams attend ten workshops to develop their start-up idea.

The launch event was open to students wishing to take part in the programme and Chapter residents. It was a great opportunity to network and meet like minded young entrepreneurs.

Watch it on our YouTube channel: Chapter London

Watch it on our YouTube channel: Chapter London

CODE AT UNIFollowing on from our entrepreneurial theme, we teamed up with

Kickstart London and Code at Uni to provide students with a free two-hour interactive workshop to learn the basics of how to build a website.

It’s a 21st century life skill that is often not touched on in the classroom, unless of course that is what you are studying, so being able to provide such a beneficial extracurricular workshop was something we were keen to facilitate at Chapter.

We know it can be a bit daunting when you first move to London. Here are a few neighbourhood guides, some top places to visit and apps to use to help you feel like a local in no time.

Maybe it’s because you’re a Londoner

ALDGATE Situated on the fringe

of the City and neighbouring Whitechapel, Aldgate is one of the most historically interesting pockets of London. The area is now popular with city professionals and edgy East Enders, boasting a mixture of traditional cosy pubs, modern restaurants and trendy bars.

If you have a spare Sunday,

be sure to explore the area’s tainted past with a visit to the Jack the Ripper museum, Traitor’s Gate or the Tower of London, and discover how life once was in this vibrant quarter.

HIGHBURY Famous for its Georgian

architecture and green spaces, Highbury is an absolutely charming place to live – just minutes from the centre of the capital.

Predominantly residential but with excellent transport links to the commercial hubs in the City, it mainly attracts students and young professionals creating a friendly, laid-back atmosphere which you’ll love. With its many established theatres and exciting music venues, it is an interesting and artistic area filled with world class restaurants and cute cafés, so you’re never short of cool places to go with friends.

1 THE ARCELORMITTAL ORBIT

The sky’s the limit. Ride the world’s highest and longest tunnel slide, taking you down the UK’s tallest public artwork with London’s dramatic cityscape whizzing by. In the 40-second trip, you will circle around the ArcelorMittal Orbit 12 times as you weave through the famous loops and curves of the iconic structure and end with a 50m straight run back down to earth. It’s one of the most striking and enduring visual legacies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games that united London in 2012.

2 THAMES ROCKETAnother adrenaline

kick, a fast, furious and thrilling way to see the river Thames. There are a few tour options available, so try them all. It’s definitely one of the coolest and quickest ways to take in London’s sights for sure.

3 AFTERNOON TEA BUS TOUR

Two quintessentially British things to tick off in one trip –

travel on a red routemaster London bus and devour afternoon tea. Life couldn’t be more perfect as you take in the sights of London on this fabulously converted London bus and feast on a selection of treats.

4 GREENWICH ROYAL OBSERVATORY

Ever wondered where GMT comes from? Well this is the spot. Go and stand on the meridian line in a UNESCO world heritage site and, whilst you’re there, take a trip to London’s only planetarium. Plus, you also have the chance to take in the world’s sole surviving tea-clipper, the Cutty Sark (tip: it looks like a pirate ship).

5 DESIGN MUSEUMHaving outgrown its

previous residence, The Design Museum recently re-opened at its brand new premises in Kensington. It is now home to some of the greatest pieces in design, celebrating objects that have shaped our lives for generations. If you like design, brand and history you’ll love this.

service of every member of the staff concerned and the immense comfort and convenience. In particular, Egle and Jaime have proven to be

more than managers – they genuinely make the effort to care for and increase the well-being of

each of the residents on your property.” Shawn from SingaporeKings College London

CHAPTER LEWISHAM “I booked my studio months in advance before moving to London, and the booking process was really smooth.

Additionally, they have always been very supportive online by replying to my messages very fast, and their on-site staff is very diligent, helpful, kind and friendly. Managing an entire building and ensuring that the

hundreds of residents feel like home must be hard work, and for that I personally thank you.”

Javier from EcuadorKings College London

CHAPTER HIGHBURY “Really good gym in the

building and I am just 10 minutes from my uni.”

Pachita from IndiaUniversity of the Arts

CHAPTER KINGS CROSS “The ambiance and the proximity

to my school is the best thing about this location. The common room

enables me to make more friends than I could ever have imaged and I was also able to learn how to play pool. The community is absolutely

cool and it consists of welcoming and accommodating people.” Caroline from United States

CHAPTER SOUTH BANK “It’s quite close to UCL making it

easy for me as I like to walk to get to lectures and it’s close to Euston and Kings Cross as well, so it’s great for

me when I want to explore London. And I just like to walk to school. The management team are always kind and lovely. I like the size of the bed.”

Harriet from United KingdomUniversity College London

CHAPTER PORTOBELLO “I loved it here. Events planned were great, staff was amazing, welcoming

and always helpful. My time here was great, I would definitely stay

here again and have recommended someone to stay.”

L’euince from United StatesLafayette College

CHAPTER SPITALFIELDS “It’s not too crowded here yet everything is local, I like that.

Compared to other places in the area, they were dull and the students don’t talk to each other. I’m happy

because I tried (another student accommodation building) and I wasn’t happy. I’m happy here.”
