3. When should a decision about enteringhospice be made, and who shouldmake it?It’s never too early to discuss your end-of-life wishes with your loved ones sothat they fully understand your wishes. When it becomes clear that the end oflife is approaching, patients and familieswho are interested in hospice care shouldtalk to their physician or call WhatcomHospice at (360) 733-5877 to learn

6. How does hospice manage pain?Hospice clinicians are up to dateon the latest medications andtechniques for pain and symptommanagement. They are usuallyvery successful at helping patientsattain a level of comfort that isacceptable to them. Dying doesnot have to hurt.

7. Doesn’t hospice really kill people? No, hospice affirms life and doesnot seek to hasten death. Our goalis to keep patients comfortableand give them the best qualityof life possible.

8. How difficult is caring for adying loved one at home?It is rewarding, but never trulyeasy. At the end of a long, progressive illness, nights can beespecially difficult. Hospice staff isavailable around the clock to helpfamily members problem solveand to visit should an emergencyarise. Should home care becometoo difficult, our 12-bed Hospice

House provides a comfortable, homelike environment and is staffed 24/7 by competent hospice professionals and caring volunteers.

9. Can a hospice patient who showssigns of recovery be returned toregular medical treatment?Absolutely, we love it when ourpatients “graduate” from hospice! If improvement in the conditionoccurs and the disease seems tobe in remission the patient can bedischarged from hospice andreturn to aggressive therapy.

10. How is hospice care paid for?Hospice services are fully coveredby Medicare and most privateinsurance plans. Communitydonations to Whatcom HospiceFoundation allow us to providemany “Cadillac” services aboveand beyond those we arereimbursed for. Your gifts alsoallow us to provide end-of-life careto those who cannot afford to payfor hospice services. Thank you!

Often people and organizations who have been touched by hospice services want to make a difference by raising money and awareness for Whatcom Hospice, and one way to do this is to organize a third-party fundraising activity.

Whatcom Hospice Foundation is very grateful for the efforts of all those who spend their own precious time and resources creating self-directed events and activities to leverage support for terminally ill people and their families in our community. If you’ve ever thought you might like to help Whatcom Hospice in this way, here are a few recent examples of hometown hospice heroes to help spur you on!

Create a new benefit event and leverage social media. To help raise awareness of hospice services among young adults, Whatcom Hospice Foundation Board member Lindsie Fratus created the “Lumber and Lace Ball” – a themed benefit dance celebrating Whatcom County’s historic roots in the timber, mining and fishing industries. Now in its third year, the ball has raised thousands for Whatcom Hospice and has touched more than 2500 people through the power of social media.

Name Hospice as the beneficiary of your existing annual event. Why not turn your annual golf tournament, fun run, wine tasting or birthday party into a hospice benefit? Last October store owner Barb Lupo named hospice to receive proceeds from Garys’ Men’s and Women’s Wear Fall Fashion Show, raising more than $3,300 for Whatcom Hospice.

Designate a portion of your business sales to benefit Whatcom Hospice.Whatcom Hospice regularly receives checks from Statement Apparel in Barkley Village representing a portion of the shop’s sales, thanks to store owner Dee-Dee Bell.

If you would like to discuss a self-directed fundraising idea, please call Shaaron Coleman at (360) 788-6850.

As the manager of Whatcom Hospice services, I know that facing the crisis

of terminal illness can be very difficult and frightening – both for the patient involved and for their whole circle of loved ones. At hospice, we encourage families to ask lots of questions and make the most informed decisions possible. Here are some common questions about hospice care:

1. What is hospice?Hospice is a special way of caring for people in the final stages of life. The goal of hospice is to provide medical, emotional, spiritual and practical support for terminally ill people and their families. 6. How does hospice manage pain?Hospice clinicians are up to date on the latest medications and techniques for pain and symptom management. They are usually very successful at helping patients attain a level of comfort that is acceptable to them. Dying does not have to hurt.

7. Doesn’t hospice really kill people? No, hospice affirms life and does not seek to hasten death. Our goal is to keep patients comfortable and give them the best quality of life possible.

8. How difficult is caring for a dying loved one at home?It is rewarding, but never truly easy. At the end of a long, progressive illness, nights can be especially difficult. Hospice staff is available around the clock to help family members problem solve and to visit should an emergency arise. Should home care become too difficult, our 12-bed Hospice

House provides a comfortable, homelike environment and is staffed 24/7 by competent hospice professionals and caring volunteers.

9. Can a hospice patient who shows signs of recovery be returned to regular medical treatment?Absolutely, we love it when our patients “graduate” from hospice! If improvement in the condition occurs and the disease seems to be in remission the patient can be discharged from hospice and return to aggressive therapy.

10. How is hospice care paid for?Hospice services are fully covered by Medicare and most private insurance plans. Community donations to Whatcom Hospice Foundation allow us to provide many “Cadillac” services above and beyond those we are reimbursed for. Your gifts also allow us to provide end-of-life care to those who cannot afford to pay for hospice services. Thank you!
