Dear Friends,I have to laugh. I am sitting at my desk writing this piece for the Spring/Summer newsletter and it is late February, the temperature is -2 degrees and there are several feet of snow on the ground. I have spent the last couple days talking with the staff about Dunning Lake, summer camps, and warm weather special events in the middle of one of the best winters in years and it doesn’t seem right.

Notice I said one of the best winters in years. Your personal opinion of this winter season is totally dependent on your frame of mind. Many people are saying “I have had enough of this snow and I can’t wait for winter to end.” Not us! We love it, for several reasons. First, a snowy winter means cross country skiing at Winding Trails. Cross country skiing is the number one aerobic activity for winter sports. It works almost every muscle in your body and is very gentle on your joints. This winter we have had thousands of people join us for skiing. One group of regulars was the New Haven Outing Club that has come up every Wednesday. They are a group of 15-20 seniors ranging from 60 to 80 years old. I certainly hope I am as active as them when I get to that age. It was just awesome. The second reason I love a cold snowy winter is it provides more opportunities for families to spend time together in the outdoors. We have had a great season of ice skating and the Sportsplex Hill has held its snow for some outstanding sledding and sliding. This year will definitely go down as a great winter for Winding Trails. But this is New England, and one of the best parts of its charm is the change of seasons.

Spring is coming! The Board of Directors and staff continue to work hard to make Winding Trails the best it can be. Last summer, we sent the membership a satisfaction survey and your response was overwhelmingly positive. There were definitely a few suggestions made that we will be implementing. In terms of major park improvements this year, you will find several items of note. First of all, we paved the gravel lot across from the Dunning Lake bathhouse. This will be a welcome addi-tion for those of you pushing strollers or walking around without shoes. We are also purchasing additional picnic tables and grills for the beach area. We have allocated a substantial amount of money for the “refurbishing” of many buildings. Much of this will involve “re-facing” the outside of buildings and cedar staining them. The Dunning Lake boathouse was completed this fall and the Dunning Lake bathhouse is scheduled to be done this spring along with some inside improve-ments. We have also purchased a tow behind chip spreader. This is being used to spread wood chips on many of our trails that are in rough shape from years of erosion and usage. The spring and summer seasons are definitely our busiest. To take full advantage of the value of your membership, I encour-

age you to read this newsletter and fill your calendar with family fun Winding Trails’ events. The programs are conveniently separated into categories – Family, Youth, Adults, Aquatics, and Camps. Register early for the programs that interest you. We are finding more and more of our programs are gaining popularity and filling up early. Our guiding principles of fostering a love for the outdoors, creating a sense of community, and developing leadership and life skills are at the heart of all we do.

I look forward to seeing many familiar faces as well as getting to know our new friends throughout the year. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me..

Sincerely,

Scott Brown, CPRPExecutive Director

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE ON THE BOARD AND COMMITTEES Winding Trails is a nonprofit organization that relies

upon volunteer members to help provide governance for the organization. In addition to the Board of Directors, there are five committees that work to provide strategic, fiduciary, and generative oversight for the organization. Each year, we look for new members with diverse backgrounds in age, sex, ethnicity, park usage, and interests to serve on the Board of Directors and various committees. Time commitment varies depending on the position, you just need to have an interest in Winding Trails and helping to make it better. If you feel you have skills in fundraising, strategic planning, construc-tion, architecture, human resources, insurance, landscaping, engineering, finance, marketing, recreation programming, or other pertinent areas that would be of help to us, please contact Scott Brown, Executive Director at (860) 677-8458 ext. 18. Help make a difference in your facility.

ANNUAL LAKE TREATMENTDunning Lake is one of our most precious resources at

Winding Trails. Each year we monitor the health of the lake by conducting water tests, inventorying plants, etc. The lake currently has several species of invasive plants that we are con-trolling through a state permitted weed treatment. As a result, Dunning Lake will be closed on Wednesday, May 20th and Wednesday, June 10th at 4:00pm for our annual weed treat-ments. The lake will be open the following day after each of these applications. We apologize for the inconvenience.

MAIN OFFICE HOURSThe main office is open 8:30am – 4:00pm Monday through

Friday. The main office will be closed on Memorial Day, May 25th and Friday, July 3rd. If you miss the office hours, you can always use the convenient Drop Box slot next to the office door.

THE GRILLE HOURSThe Grille is our concession stand at Dunning Lake located

on the west side of the bathhouse It is open on weekends only, from May 30th to June 21st. It will be open 7 days a week start-ing June 22nd. The Grille will be open on the weekends only from August 22nd to September 7th.

NO SMOKING POLICY EXPANDED In our recent member survey, the issue of smoking at

Dunning Lake was mentioned by several members. The Board of Directors has discussed this issue and is expanding our no smoking policy for 2015. Presently, there is no smoking on Dunning Lake beach. This policy will now be expanded to include the entire Dunning Lake beach and picnic area. Individuals that do smoke will be asked to refrain from smok-ing along the 900' beach and picnic area up to the wooden guard rail along the roadway. We ask for your cooperation in complying with this expanded policy.

NEW GUEST FEES DISCOUNT AFTER 5:00 PMIn our effort to continue to listen to our membership and

respond, we are changing our guest fee policy. In the recent member survey, several people suggested a discount on guest fees after 5:00pm. Currently, guest fees are $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children ages 3 to 15. Starting this season, guests brought in by members after 5:00pm will be discounted by $1.00. The guest fee after 5:00pm will be $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Members using the guest booklet passes will not receive an additional discount.

WINDING TRAILS FAQSWhere do I put the sticker?Stickers must be attached to the lower driver’s side windshield. The gate attendants will scan your vehicle each time you enter the park. The sticker must be attached to the correct vehicle and plate as noted on your membership application. These will be your stickers for as long as your membership remains current, or until you get a new vehicle. If there is a problem scanning your sticker please contact our office to have the problem corrected.

What do I do if I need a new sticker? If you break your windshield you should remove the sticker (in pieces if necessary) and return it to the Main Office to get a new one. If you purchase a new car, we also need a copy of the new car registration to update your file. If the old sticker is not returned, a $5 fee will be charged for issuing a new sticker.

How do I get a nanny into the park? You can add a nanny or caregiver to your membership for an additional $75. Contact the Main Office for an application. No passes will be issued without a completed Nanny Application and photo ID. Nannies will be issued a nanny pass that must be presented when they enter the park. Nannies are only allowed access to the park with your family and/or the children in their charge.

Where do we park?Winding Trails has six designated parking areas and an overflow area. On crowded days you may need to park in the overflow lot which is located on the peninsula. We ask that you do not park on any other grass areas. Parking tickets will be issued to those parking in non-designated parking areas. Multiple park-ing tickets may result in revocation of membership privileges.

What are the rules about bringing a guest?Members are allowed a maximum of 6 guests per day per membership. Larger groups must contact our office so special arrangements can be made. Guests must park along the road in front of the gate house. Guest parking is not permitted inside the park. Guests must arrive at the same time as the member and are the responsibility of the member and should remain with them throughout the day. The guest fee is $6 per adult and $4 per child (ages 3-15). Discount guest books are also available. They contain 10 passes each and have no expiration date. Fees are $30 for children's guest pass book and $50 for adult guest pass book. Only members can purchase guest books and/or passes and only members can hand these passes to the Gate Attendant.

Is the water tested on a regular basis?Yes, we have the water tested monthly. The Farmington Valley Health District is responsible for the testing. Since the inception of Dunning Lake in 1972, we have never had a high bacteria count. The lake has always tested as one of the cleanest in the state.

Are dogs allowed in the park? No. Winding Trails is a wildlife preserve. To protect the wildlife and each member's rights, we insist that no dogs or pets are allowed on the property year round.

Is membership ever revoked?Yes, this has occurred. On very rare occasions we have individu-als that break the rules or engage in behavior that is deemed dangerous or inappropriate. In these incidents, the Executive Director does reserve the right to revoke membership privileges with no refund.

NATURE’S PORCH – BEST SUMMER EVER!Nature’s Porch is getting ready to open for our third summer.

We are very excited and hope you are too. The thought of sitting in the sun on the porch with family and friends, checking out the new information & activities inside and the return of the animals to the viewing shed is welcomed after a long cold winter.

Conservation is our theme this summer. We spend a lot of time and money to ecologically manage the 380 acres of property. Much of our conservation efforts are behind the scenes. We are going to highlight the natural wonders of Winding Trails and share the research and monitoring we have been doing over the years with our members through themed weekends. Here is how it will work.

Nature’s Porch will operate as a “drop-in” as usual during normal operating hours. However, each weekend will have

a theme to highlight a natural environment or species on our property. We encourage every-one to stop by to say hello and learn a few things about our beautiful natural environment. Inside the porch, on the barn doors, we will provide general educational information on the theme and the specific research we have here at Winding Trails. We will also provide a couple table activities to reinforce some aspect of our theme. Those of you who are then excited by the theme and wish to learn more are encouraged to seek out the porch staff member to see how

Winding Trails monitors, tracks or researches that environ-ment or species. If you have the time and interest, we will then send you out to do some research or monitoring to assist in our conservation efforts. Here is an example.Nature’s Porch opens April 4th. The theme is “Vernal Pools

– Frogs Return”. One of the barn doors will be general infor-mation like, what is a vernal pool and how does it work? The second barn door will be Winding Trails specific, like how many vernal pools are on property and what we know about them. Some table activities could be a ground water display

After that, if you have an hour or two, your family or group could assist in our research and conservation of the property and would be assigned a vernal pool to collect information that day.

Nature’s Porch is for everyone regardless of your interest in nature or science. We ask for patience and good will as we explore this themed weekend concept. We can’t wait to open and see old friends and make some new ones. See you at the Porch!

WINDING TRAILS’ DEER HERDSThere are a couple of deer herds that call Winding Trails’ home. A deer herd is made

up of two groups that are based on gender and social interactions. These are the doe family groups and the buck group. The members of the groups will intermingle calmly between themselves based on season and an established hierarchy. The doe family group is made up of a mature doe and her offspring. Her offspring can

include the current year fawns and the yearlings, which are the grown fawns from the prior year. The offspring are usually a mix of females and males. This family group can number between three and five individuals. The young does will stay with their mother until their first birth which starts a new family group. The young bucks entering their second fall will leave the family group and join a buck group within the herd. The buck group consists of a mature buck that tolerates traveling with younger bucks

during the year. During most of the year, there will be friendly interaction between the young bucks that can include stares, lowered ears, kicking, and sparing, which is basically pushing each other around and testing hierarchies. The mature buck steps in from time-to-time to enforce his dominance within the group. During the rut or breed-ing season, the bucks will travel alone as hormones rise. They will mark their territory with antler rubs on tree branches and trunks along with ground scraps. These markers, both visual and scent based, allow does and other bucks to access the health, vigor, and dominance of the buck. There are four to five doe family groups on the property. They consist of a family group

in the floodplain of Poplar Swamp Brook and the hill area along Canal Trail, another group occupies the area above Trout Pond, with two to three other groups north and south of the Powerline. There is a buck group that travels along the Powerline corridor that runs through the property east to west. During the winter, dependent on snow fall, these groups will often combine into a large herd of twenty or more individuals. The white-tailed deer’s favorite habitats are fields surrounded by forest. This provides

the best food and security for the group. Winding Trails does not presently have this type habitat. The creation of a five acre natural grass field has been on our Forest Stewardship plan for about 10 years. The Area and Facilities Committee are reviewing plans and logistics to add a natural field to our property to increase habitat and biodiversity in the future.Sources: New Hampshire State Wildlife – White-tailed Deerwww.wildlife.state.nh.us/Wildlife/Wildlife_profiles/whitetailed_deer.htmlNew England Wildlife – Habitat, Natural History, and Distribution by R. OVERNIGHT CAMPING: MOVING TO PACK IN – PACK OUTYears ago, there were very few

people using the campsites and our trails. The recent improvements to Walton Pond and the addition of Nature’s Porch has resulted in an influx of families using the campsites and walking the trails more frequently. We are thrilled with the attention these areas are receiving, however we are experi-encing some unexpected conflicts. As a result of the increase

in pedestrian traffic, we have changed our car policy at the campsites for this year. Our campsites will be “pack in / pack out” only. This means no cars will be allowed to drive to the campsites. Due to this change, we will be adding secure food storage containers at each campsite. This will keep your food safe from our woodland friends. We will also have pull carts so you can bring your supplies to the campsite.

Additionally, we would also like to remind overnight camp-ing families about the safety of properly extinguishing camp fires upon leaving your site. Regarding wood for campfires, there is plenty of deadwood that can be found in the woods around the campsites. You are encouraged to bring an axe and split what you need. The wood for these fires is not to be taken from the wood pile across from the Maintenance Department or our educational cordwood display. We understand that these

changes will be an inconve-nience for those interested in “car camping”. We do hope you will continue to participate in this program as a “pack in/pack out camper. If you still want a “car camping” experience, there are plenty of opportunities for this type of camping through state parks and private campgrounds. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understand-ing with these new policies as we strive to improve Winding Trails for the benefit and safety of everyone.

For the past 68 years Winding Trails has been a vital part of the Farmington and central Connecticut community. Like most nonprofit organizations, we ask our friends and neighbors to support our mis-sion through our Annual Campaign. These donations help us to make our community a better place to live and raise our children. Each year through the generous support from members, camp families, and area

businesses, donations to the Trails Fund have helped Winding Trails to expand camp opportunities for deserving kids, advance our environmental initiatives, and provide quality educational programs.

Last year with the help of nearly 300 donations, we were able to send 71 deserving kids to camp, provided several free nature programs, purchase equipment to improve our trails, and added improvements to the

Dunning Lake picnic area. As part of the Winding Trails’ family, we are hoping you will consider supporting the 2015 Trails Fund. One hundred percent (100%) of your tax-deductible donation will be used for General Support, Campership or Nature’s Porch-Environmental Initiatives. Donations can be made online at www.windingtrails.org or through the special mailing that was sent early March.

TRAILS FUND: YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN!

DUNNING LAKE BEACH SANDLet’s talk about the sand on Dunning Beach. On the recent

member survey, the issue of sand quality at Dunning Lake was mentioned by several members. It has been called “dirty” and not real sand. Before we discuss the idiosyncrasies of sand, we need some perspective. To start, when we dream about an ideal beach, it brings comparisons to locations like Florida, Bermuda, Cape Cod, and the Caribbean. Those real and ideal images, like the screen savers on our computers, show beauti-ful “sugar sand” beaches. Now, “sugar sand” is one of nature’s gifts requiring a limestone base combined with salt water, time and the perpetual motion of the ocean. Notice that the list of great beaches did not include Connecticut or any lake in New England. Unfortunately, Winding Trails cannot replicate, buy or maintain a picture perfect “sugar sand” beach. However, we have spent a lot of time, energy and money to provide the best lakefront beach we can. Here are some of the considerations.

Dunning Lake is a man-made body of water carved out of what used to be Poplar Swamp. It was started in 1968 by Dunning Sand and Gravel who at the time owned two-thirds of the present lake. Winding Trails partnered with them and gave the rights to mine the gravel from our third of the swamp. It took almost twenty years and when they were finished, the Dunning family sold the entire 80 acre lake to Winding Trails for one dollar in 1988. Before that time, Winding Trails’ members and campers swam in our beloved 8-acre Walton Pond which had sedimentation problems dating all the way back to the 60’s. Fortunately, we corrected this situation with our Save Walton Pond project in 2011.

A 900-foot beach was constructed on the north shore Dunning Lake. It sits on a bed of sand, gravel and rock. This rock includes the brownstones you see along the road inside the park. Some of this rock is formed into large solid ledges like the peninsula where overflow parking is located. The beach has a slope ranging from one degree to eight degrees depending on where you are on the beach. Over the course of any given year through both wind and rain erosion, the sand ends up in the lake. This makes for a nice sandy bottom to the lake, but leaves the beach at times less than desirable.

Many members are not aware that we spend approximately $6,000 each May bringing in new sand to spread on the beach. This involves trucking in 150 tons of sand and the hiring of a contractor to grade the beach and spread the sand. Sand can be purchased in a variety of ways. There is a concrete sand, mason sand, and pool sand which is classified by the size of the sand

crystals and the number of times the product is washed. Winding Trails has tested each type of sand with varying degrees of suc-cess. The pool sand was used for several years but we found its small grains were easily “moved” by wind and rain and quickly disappeared. We have found that the grade A mason sand has worked out best for us, but it is not a perfect solution.

There are other factors that contribute to what folks may call “dirty” sand. The first is we have a man-made beach that sits on sand, gravel, dirt, and rock deposited from a receding glacier 2,500 years ago, which is a fact that won’t change. This is why the lake was mined in the first place and why Dunning Sand & Gravel is located next door. The second consideration is we are beholden to the natural forces of rain, storms, and run-off. The picture above shows what bad weather can do to your beach. The third consideration is whether to provide a hard or soft beach. We have agreed upon a soft beach for the comfort of the

membership. If you have ever sat on the beach in the off-season, it is a hard beach. In other words, we let the weather pack it and we don’t disturb it, which leads to less run-off and sand loss. In order to provide you with a soft beach, we employ the use of our Cherrington beach cleaner and a tractor pulled rake. Most mornings during the summer season, our maintenance crew grooms and cleans the beach. This provides a soft beach, but is more prone to erosion and run-off. The last issue is small. Those cute, innocent little darlings industriously digging their holes with shovels and Sponge Bob pails. Not one of us would have it any other way, but those little ones can turn-over some serious earth. These children take to heart that they can dig a hole to China

or attempt to replicate a scale model of the Grand Canyon, we have witnessed many attempts. And, kudos to them that try; because it is not easy digging, as anyone with a beach umbrella can attest to. However, this timeless practice does mix the substrate and adds dirt to the beach. In conclusion, Winding Trails tries to provide the best

beach possible. We spend time, energy and money to make your beach the best place in the world. We understand that the beach sand is worn-out and dirty by the end of the sea-son. Our Area and Facilities Committee and staff are in the process of researching ways we can improve this situation. For now, we love that you choose to be with us on Dunning Lake and there is no greater joy than to see our members and their families together on the beach, with the sun shining, and their problems left outside the gate.

CAMP CORNERThings have been busy at Winding Trails Summer

Day Camp in preparation for a great 2015. As sum-mer approaches, we are busy planning new events to spice up your summer. The summer will be full of great activities such as archery, basketball, nature, swimming, arts and crafts, special events, perform-ers and much more. This summer we have added a Mountain Biking program to camp through our CWC time and for our upper campers. We have had a new shed built by students at Farmington High School to be able to store bikes while you are at camp and will have some bikes available for use, but not many at this time. This will be a new program for us at Winding Trails and we look forward to seeing it grow over the years.

Camp is about trying new things and we feel each camper this summer will have the chance to experience something new. Whether it is catching a fish at Walton Pond or performing a gymnastics routine at opening, our campers will experience everything Winding Trails Summer Day Camp has to offer. If you have not already done so, please check out our camp

pages on our website and on Facebook to see what is happening at camp as well as our calendar sec-tion. The popularity and demand for our camp program continues to grow and we are currently over 87% filled. We have also added a special one week session at the end of the summer, August 17-21. In order to register for this session you must register for a previous session at camp. We are excited about the opportunities for session five and look forward to seeing you there. If you would like to check on availability for your child’s age group, please call Renee at (860) 677-8458 Ext. 12 or go online at www.windingtrails.org, and click on the camp page to view or download the camp brochure.

As always, we offer a variety of specialty half day camp programs also, like our LEGO Camp, Adventure Camps, Sports Camps, and our Afternoon Explorer program. So don’t sit inside playing video games this summer, get out and enjoy all the great things that the Winding Trails Summer Camps have to offer!

2ND ANNUAL KINECTIC SCULPTURE RACESPONSORED BY FLAGGSTEAD SMOKEHOUSE TO BENEFIT THE WINDING TRAILS CAMPERSHIP FUND

This event is like nothing you have ever seen. It is a race that brings artist, engineers, and physical competitors together to create a wacky vehicle that moves across land and water. A combination of creativity, engineering, teamwork, athleticism, and fun is what is needed to participate in this event. It is open to any person or group that is inspired to create an all-terrain vehicle. The 8 mile race course starts and finishes at Winding Trails while touring parts of scenic Farmington. You can par-ticipate as an individual or as a team of any size. Build your vehicle, decorate it as you choose, and get in costume. You won’t believe how much fun you can have. We are looking for race participants, sponsors, volunteers, and spectators. Details on the event can be found at www.ctkineticsculpturerace.com.

Great Quotes from our Member Survey:

Winding Trails has been a part of our family's life for almost 25 years. All of our children attended

the camps, special events, and other activities which were not only fun but contributed to their

growth and development. All of the staff were always so supportive. Just a wonderful family place.

Page 20: SPRING/SUMMER 2015 Winding Tsrali Newsletter€¦ · Newsletter SPRING/SUMMER 2015. Dear Friends, I have to laugh. I am sitting at my desk writing this piece for the Spring/Summer

NATURE RANGERS FOR 4’S AND 5’SMiss Judy takes your children on a journey of active outdoor

exploration to new places. Learn about early spring flowers, Discover wood frog eggs hatching into tadpoles, or watch new leaves appearing on the shrubs and trees. These plus many other activities will be offered during each session. ■ Before choosing a level, take each swimmers ability into consideration. It is important that you sign up for the correct level at the time of sign up so that he/she is not switched to a different level which we may not be able to accommodate.

■ Progression is at the swimmers own pace. Some will move quickly at first while others progress more slowly. We keep the entire learning process as much fun as possible.

■ Classes will be held rain or shine. If the weather prevents us from getting in the water, there will be other activities available for your child. Keep in mind that in the event of a thunderstorm we have limited space for coverage. Please use your discretion.

■ Minimum: 3-4 per class depending on swim level. Maximum: 5-10 depending on swim level.

■ Registration must be complete, including payment, before being accepted. Registration is required by two days before the session starts. Register early, space is limited.

■ Registration is available online at www.windingtrails.org, or you can register with the paper form at the back of the newsletter.
