Have you ever asked this question to yourself or out loud to others? The implication being they or you weren’t thinking! At times I’ve found myself saying this in my mind to God, “What were you thinking building your church out of people?” It often amazes me that as smart as God is He chose to build His body on earth out of people like you and me.

People are such a curious and confusing building material choice for an all‑knowing Creator. Surely He was thinking, when this is completed all creation will see that only God could accomplish such an undertaking.

Imagine trying to build a building and the bricks you are using are constantly running this way and that. They’re doing exactly what you instructed them not to do. Telling you, the builder, they don’t want to be placed here or there. Arguing endlessly saying they know better where they fit and how to do the job. Remember the bricks can’t grasp the overall blueprint to know what the builder has in mind. Yet He has chosen to use “living stones”.

Imagine a master builder who knows how to utilize every brick, even the bricks that are chipped and broken. He knows how best to cause us to fit into His masterpiece.

Jesus is the chief cornerstone and the only perfect stone, but next to Him and surrounding him are imperfect stones. Peter got a lot wrong yet God used Him as a foundation stone among the Apostles and Prophets. Down through church history some of these living stones have reflected Jesus well and others have

done great damage. Nonetheless, the church of Jesus continues to be built by a gracious and loving architect and builder, one who not only sees the now but also the finished product. He’s also paid for it!As leaders we play a role in this grand scheme. We are called of God to assist in this building process. We’ve been tasked to help the broken and chipped bricks find their place in Christ’s kingdom and understand they still have purpose. We have been given the challenge to deal with bricks that wander, tell us how to do our job and even attack us at times.

Lord, when I get frustrated at other bricks, help me remember how you deal with me. I must confess I am the wandering brick. I am the one who thinks I know what is best. I am the broken, chipped brick at times due to going my own way. As a leader Lord, remind me that your ways are not my ways. Help me always be grateful that you think the way you do in using people to build your church. Remind me Lord when I want to discard some bricks that you chose not to do so with me.

Thank you for loving us and being faithful to complete the work you’ve begun in us. Thank you for thinking the way you do. Thank you that you will build your church!

I look forward to seeing you at Camp Meeting 2015 June 28 – July 2, 2015. We have two wonderful speakers lined up in Bishop Mike Gray and Bishop Jim Whitfield. Notice also that Falcon Children’s Home will be with us on Tuesday night. You don’t want to miss out. Come expecting UNDENIABLE things to happen as we prayerfully value Pentecost!

4 THE CHALLENGE MAGAZINE

This year in the Pentecostal Holiness Church we are emphasizing number two of our 7 core values: We prayerfully value Pentecost.

In the 14th through the 16th chapter of John’s Gospel, in one of the last few conversations with his disciples, Jesus said that he was going away. But he said that it was better for him not to be here in the flesh because he was sending another one just like him. He said that the Holy Spirit of God, who was in fact God, would come to not just be WITH them, but he would be IN them.

John 14:19, 20 – “19a...little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. AT THAT DAY you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, AND I IN YOU.”

Jesus had a specific DAY in mind when he made that statement. We know now, that he was referring to the Day of Pentecost. That day would make a big difference in their lives. It would be a day like no other day.

Then, in Luke 24: 46-49, Jesus gave his disciples a specific and pointed assignment with a promise: “Then He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; BUT TARRY IN THE CITY OF JERUSALEM UNTIL YOU ARE ENDUED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH.’”

What an awesome but totally overwhelming job Jesus gave them. Think about this: God was entrusting the redemption of all mankind to a group of mostly, unlearned, uneducated, fallible, imperfect human beings. Not only that, but consider the fact that in the face of a world‑wide mission, they had no money ‑ no mass media ‑ no sophisticated system of transportation ‑ and at this point, the whole world had not even been discovered yet. I mean, it was a totally impossible assignment! And Jesus, knowing that they were completely inadequate, told them that they needed a specific experience on a

specific day that would equip them for what they needed to do.

Acts 2 tells us about this unique day; this day that made a difference in their lives: Acts 2:1 ‑ "When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place." By the way, I am persuaded that when we have the UNITY of Pentecost, we will have the POWER of Pentecost! You see, I believe the reason we don’t see the power of Pentecost like we see it in the book of Acts is because we don’t have the unity of Pentecost. If we can get that unity thing right then I believe the power thing will follow.

OH WHAT A DIFFERENCE ONE DAY CAN MAKE!

And what an amazing astounding kind of day it turned out to be! This was not an average, ordinary kind of day – this was the kind of day that changes everything! Once every year for 1500 years they had been celebrating the day of Pentecost as instructed by God but nothing had ever happened like what happened on THIS day of Pentecost! The disciples of Jesus, about 120 of them; for ten days they had been waiting and praying, getting all clean spiritually and in unity anticipating what God would do.

You see, this would be a difference‑making day. This would be a life‑changing day. This would be a day that would help them carry out the commission that Jesus had given them.

AND THEN IT HAPPENED! And what happened was so obvious that these people, who had come from every place to celebrate Pentecost, were stunned, and startled and did not know what to think about what was happening.

Acts 2:12 – “So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘Whatever could this mean?’” And Peter said, (Acts 2:16) "This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel."

I would like to suggest that if we are going to reach our area of influence and the world for Jesus that we need another day like they had, a day in which Pentecostal Power is poured out on us as it was on them.

On March 15, 2015 I had the privilege to organize Crossfire Pentecostal Holiness Church in Loris South Carolina as a SCIPHC Member Church. The Church is located at 4229 Walnut Street, Loris SC, 29569. Rev. Ray Lynch serves as pastor. We had a great day as we organized the church with 20 members and then shared a meal together after the service.

SIDE NOTE: The building where the church is located was previously used as a bar. That morning Pastor Lynch asked if anybody ever attend the bar and about six people raised their hands. Praise God! What use to be used for the devil is now being used for God and the Lord is saving people.

Abraham Lincoln said this about education, “The mode of studying law is very simple, though laborious and tedious. It is only to get the books and read and study them carefully…work, work, work is the main thing.”

Rev. Mark Potter Jr. believed also in education, studying to show oneself approved and working hard to acquire a sufficient education to get through the world respectably.

After the home going of Rev. Mark Potter Jr. a memorial scholarship was started in memory of him. Since 1998 the scholarship has helped over 100 students in the amount of $84,000. As you can see this Memorial Scholarship has been a blessing to many. The scholarship depends on donations, offerings and a CD to stay in operation.

Lately, the funds have been low and with several students needing financial help, the Discipleship Ministries Council planned a banquet to help raise funds for the scholarship. It was held Saturday, February 28th in the Conference Dining Hall. A delicious steak supper was provided and sponsored by Women’s Ministry, Girl’s Ministry, Men’s Ministry, Royal Rangers and Discipleship Ministries. The Discipleship Team including the Council and District Coordinators served the meal. The evening was filled with special singing by Rev. Chris and Joy Potter along with Rev. Brandon and Danielle Hutson. The guest speaker was Mrs. Melba Potter who shared serious and humorous insights about her late husband’s vision for education. It was a wonderful evening filled with worship and fellowship. There was a total of 101 people that attended the banquet and $2,400 was raised for the scholarship fund. It was a successful event.

Thank you to everyone that attended, donated, worked or contributed in any way to the Mark Potter Jr. Scholarship Banquet. May our Lord bless you for being such a blessing.

A special thank you to Rev. Brandon Hutson, my friend, team member and director over the banquet. Great job!

Loving Hands Ministry WorkshopJesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” Matthew 19:14 NLT

Loving Hands Ministry is a Special Needs Ministry for children with physical, emotional, behavioral and intellectual needs. A ministry that was birthed out of the hearts of Kent and Denise Bell. They have a son who was born with a special need and have been ministering to him for 30 years.

The Lord has led Kent and Denise on this journey to provide a respite service once a month for 3 hours for families who have children with special needs, all ages are welcome along with their siblings. Each guest is paired up with a buddy for the night and enjoys an evening of gluten free, casein free snacks, appropriate games, crafts and fun. Parents enjoy a night off and the church that has this ministry gets a chance to love on a child.

The Loving Hands Ministry Workshop was hosted by the Life Springs Worship Center and Pastor Derrick Gardner. There were 7 churches represented with a total of 61 in attendance. We are believing that God is going to birth this ministry in the S.C. Conference.

ARCHIVES & RESEARCH

ARCHIVES & RESEARCHROYAL ELDERSRev. H. Larry Jones

We want to extend a very special invitation to each of you who will be attending our 2015 Camp Meeting in Lake City, South Carolina to stop by and visit with us in our Archives Center.

The Archives Center will be open Monday through Thursday, June 29 – July 2, 2015. The hours of visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. A member of our Archives Ministries Council will be present to assist you in any way possible.

You will have an opportunity to browse through all of our materials downstairs as well as visiting in our upstairs David A. McKenzie Library. There are many books, photograph albums, General and Conference Minutes, church and ministerial histories and other church periodicals that you will find very interesting.

Also, you are invited to visit our Archives and Research display table in the Dining Hall during the week of Camp Meeting. We will have a number of items there that you may like to purchase and take home with you. We look forward to seeing you during our 105th Annual Camp Meeting.

BEAUTIFUL MARBLE TABLE DONATED TO THE ARCHIVES CENTER

Recently, a beautiful marble table was donated to the Archives Center. This table was originally purchased by Mr. Roger and Mrs. Vivian Pope and Mrs. Evelina Anderson while on a missions trip to Mexico. The table was used originally in the foyer of the Life Christian Assembly PHC in Charleston, South Carolina during the pastorate of Rev. & Mrs. Earl Lavaughn (Sara) Young.

In the Archives Center, this table was placed in the David A. McKenzie Library. This table presently holds a number of different Bibles donated to the Archives Center by the families of many of our deceased ministers. Most of these Bibles were used by these ministers during their pastoral and preaching ministries.

We appreciate the generosity of The Popes and Mrs. Anderson in sharing this beautiful piece of furniture with the Archives Center. We would also like to thank Pastor and Mrs. Young for the many items that they have donated to the Archives Center.

Jesus' desire was to see the lost saved. Before Jesus ascended to His Father He told His followers to "Go into all the world and preach the gospel; to the uttermost parts of the earth" (Matthew 28:19, Acts 1:8). The International Pentecostal Holiness Church has a strong and growing missionary family encircling the globe fulfilling the Great Commission. They have answered the call, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Paul said it best in Romans 10:15, "How beautiful are the feet of them who preach the gospel of peace, and bring good news." I feel so humbled to have a small part in missions work around the world through Women's Ministries.

For many years South Carolina IPHC Women's Ministries has been involved in blessing and supporting our IPHC missionaries. You may ask yourself, "What can my local WM do to support our missionaries and fulfill the Great Commission?" I want to share several projects with you that all of our local WM can get involved in, and many already are‑Praise God!

First of all, they need our prayers. On the IPHC World Missions website there is a daily Link Prayer Directive for our missionaries. Let us pray a daily prayer covering over their lives, their family, their ministry, and the country and people they are called to serve. Another way we can bless them is to stay in touch through

cards and letters. Remember them on their special days, like birthdays and anniversaries. I also feel we need to educate our Girls Ministries and Royal Rangers. As leaders, introduce them to different missionaries and how and where (great geography lessons) they are ministering. The GM and Royal Rangers can get involved in staying in touch and missions giving. In fact, you can educate and involve the whole church.

As women of the SCIPHC, there are several projects that we are involved in giving support to our missionaries. April is the month for sending cards and emails to our missionaries, but we want our conference to do this throughout the year. Let’s especially remember them during holidays and times of need. The following missionaries are designated to the following districts:

•Kundael and Yasina Mrema....Conway, Andrews, and Darlington •Joshua Ben and Theresa King...Johnsonville, Charleston, and Orangeburg•Todd and Stephanie Presley...Columbia, Lancaster, and Laurinburg •Larissa Ackerman...Lake City

Oasis is a ministry to our female missionaries who are home on furlough. When they visit your local church you can bless them with a gift card,

or if possible, a new outfit. Ladies, think about something you really like (manicure/pedicure, new hairdo, etc.). Bless them with something they may not normally get to do for themselves.

May is our Christmas for Missionaries month. This offering provides a much needed Christmas bonus for our IPHC missionaries and retired missionaries. When I think about how much is spent during this holiday on gifts, food, and decorations, I can only rejoice that this offering is received in May and not December. I wish I had space to share with you all the thank you notes we received and how grateful our missionaries were when they received this offering. Let us pray and ask God what He would have us give, and remember to send it to the conference office by May 31st. Feel free to send it anytime throughout the year, if you have missed this date!

The Blanche L. King Scholarship Fund for Missionaries' children assists them to further their education at one of our denominational colleges. These children labor with their parents to spread the gospel, and after college many return

to the mission field. May we continue to honor Blanche L. King and the desire she had to see that the children of our missionaries receive a college education. This offering should also be mailed to the conference office by June 30th.

I would love to hear from local directors about fund raising projects you and your ladies have done that are successful. Sharing this information may give other directors an idea that will help them with their offerings. Feel free to share information on our South Carolina IPHC Women’s Ministries’ Facebook page, or mail it to our conference office. I want to challenge each local WM to take part in blessing our missionaries in 2015. It doesn't matter how great or how small your gift (offering), it is being sown into good soil. God will bless it, our missionaries will be blessed by it, and your local WM will have planted a seed in World Missions. Thank you for supporting our missionaries. Let's reap a harvest. Jesus is soon coming! Written by Vicki Goins

Caring and Sharing with South Carolina Women’s MinistriesGod has NEVER done anything half way!!!

• He parted the entire Red Sea.• He fed all of Israel in the wilderness.• He redeemed all of humanity with the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.

The IPHC has been a powerful force propelling Falcon Children’s Home forward, by the grace and mercy of God working through our local churches, like you, year after year. Falcon has grown by leaps and bounds through the leadership of Superintendent Joseph Leggett. Through his obedience to God, supportive staff and dedication to the Falcon community, he has grown FCH into a village of its own.

The staff and house parents have reached out to many children that were in despair and given them hope and a promising future. They believe and live by the scripture from Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Falcon and its staff are doing just what God said!!!! Through your prayers and faithful support they are preparing these children to be productive men and women of God in a lost and dying world. The staff and house parents of Falcon have seen the vision. They believe in it and have chosen to dedicate their hearts and lives to this cause.

It’s time that we catch a fresh vision of FCH with them. There are many ways your church can support this wonderful children’s home. By doing an annual Falcon Fundraiser, you can make the vision come to pass; or, you can ask your WM directors for the product calendar, in your Women’s Ministries’

director’s guide, and start collecting items throughout the year.

Be creative!!! Allow your children’s church and youth ministry to get involved. They can do special projects to help with this. You may even consider allowing someone from your church that has a heart toward children, to head this up for you. Don’t hesitate to ask the Falcon youth choir to come and participate in the morning service to help generate an interest in being a more involved and supporting church. You could even bless them with a fun-filled weekend while you have them with you. Those children would love anything, especially when it is done just for them. The opportunities to help are endless, and each blessing pushes the vision of Falcon farther along.

So, grab hold of God’s vision that is being lived out in a growing village called Falcon, North Carolina. We can’t stop being a blessing now. The journey isn’t over, and God’s not finished with this powerful ministry. Let’s push and be the blessing each of us were meant to be. The journey must continue, and we’re not stopping half way! Purpose within yourself to become a part of the vision that is going all the way in God….choose to lay stepping stones in the paths of those who can’t make their way….let’s take hold of the vision, and let Falcon Children’s Home be the house of hope God destined it to be again and again, over and over, because they won’t be done until Jesus comes. Please send all monies you collect throughout the year to South Carolina Women’s Ministries’ Conference office. It is due in November, and we have the pleasure of presenting our monetary gift to them at the yearly Harvest Train on the Tuesday morning before Thanksgiving! Make sure YOU are a part of this wonderful ministry!

“Crown of Beauty” was the theme for the day for our annual Spring Fling. The day began with a beautiful crowd of ladies filling our SCIPHC Dining Hall early that Saturday morning. Ladies came from all across the state to attend this wonderful event!

WM Director Jeana Altman welcomed everyone by setting the stage with our yearly scripture, Isaiah 61:1‑3, along with emphasizing that the purpose of our event was to have each lady know that she is a crown of beauty in God’s eyes. He has turned our ashes into great beauty, and wants us to work in the beauty, in which, He has given to each of us. Board

members, Tanya McCall and Vicki Goins, then brought our ladies together by having tremendous entertainment. Ladies were able to greet and get to know each other at their individual tables, and then actually mingle in groups throughout the dining hall to become familiar with those they had never met. All you could hear was a room full of laughter ringing in the air.

Samantha McCutcheon, from Lake City, was our guest speaker. She brought the presence of the Lord into the place with a mighty word from God! Ladies worshipped throughout her entire sermon. Lives were touched, ladies were weeping at their seats, and praising the Lord! The Spirit hovered over the entire dining hall.

After her speaking, the presence of the Lord was still so very strong. We were unable to serve lunch due to the spirit of the Lord moving. We had Rev. Susan Todd lead us into some praise and worship songs. The ladies continued to worship as some made an altar at the front of the room. Deliverance was in the room! Even though it was time to be served a brunch, the ladies continued to sing and worship God. We were even given a prophetic word from God by Sharon Quick. Our caterers and youth that were going to serve the ladies, stopped what they were doing in the kitchen, and silence fell across the entire building. God blessed the ladies and the many that were working so diligently to prepare our meal in the kitchen.

We were then served a beautiful meal that was prepared by Briley Altman and his staff of workers. Lake City PH Church Drama Team served our ladies with excellence. The food and service was “out of this world.”

The brunch ended with our own “Queen of Courts”, which were members of the SCIPHC Women’s Ministries’ Board. They showed just how beautiful God could make us by using a comparison of fun videos of appreciation to dressing up in queen’s attire.

The SCIPHC Women’s Ministries Board is very thankful for all that attended the Spring Fling. Each person made it special, and it would not have been possible without your support!

WHERE ARERoyal Elders

NOWTHEY ?Rev. & Mrs. J.B. (Helen) Loving

Rev. J. B. (James Billy) Loving was born on December 23, 1940 in Greenville, South Carolina. Bill’s dad died when he was three years old, so therefore he never really knew his dad. His mother married again when Bill was seven years old, and he was blessed to have a man in his life that loved him as his own child.

At the age of eleven, he and his family moved to West Columbia, South Carolina. Bill grew up in a Baptist Church. At the age of fifteen, they began attending the Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church. It was there that he met the love of his life, Helen Kyzer. Bill said, “It was love at first sight”.

Bill was saved on Monday night, November 19, 1956 in an old fashioned tent revival meeting that was being held on Highway 215 near the airport in Columbia, South Carolina. He was sanctified, filled with the Holy Ghost, and called to preach when he was fifteen years old. That call has remained true with him until this present time.

Many people are not aware of how good God has been to him. At a very early age, God spared Bill’s life from an accidental fall on his bicycle that resulted in a fractured skull. He remembers hearing the doctors telling his mother and dad that he only had a fifty-fifty chance of survival. But in Bill’s own words, “Jesus passed by and gave me a one hundred percent chance to live”.

Bill’s military career included three years in the Army. There he served in the Guided Missiles Defense in Washington, D. C. and also in Germany. He was discharged from the Army in March, 1961. After his discharge in 1961, Bill and Helen were married on August 20, 1961. God has blessed their home

with three children: Allen, Daniel, and Melissa, and six grandchildren. Family has always been very important to Bill and Helen and that has been evident by the close relationship that they have had and still have with their children and grandchildren.

In their early life together, as husband and wife, Bill and Helen were blessed, but Bill knew that he

had not obeyed the call of God upon his life. On October 1, 1962 while working in Commercial Sound, Bill was in a bad wreck and could not work for fifty weeks. During this time, he had seven different operations. Looking back, Bill said, “I sensed that the devil was trying to kill me as a boy with a head injury and later a serious automobile wreck”. It was during those fifty weeks, after his automobile wreck, that he began to search his heart. At this point in his life, Bill repented and fully accepted the call of God upon his life to preach the Gospel.

Bill attended Columbia Bible College. It was there that he met one of his spiritual fathers, Dr. Frank H. Sells, who made a lasting impression upon his life. During one summer in Bible School, he had a short term ministry in Jamaica. Bill also received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biblical Studies from Southwestern College in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under the ministry teaching of Dr. R. O. Corvin.

In 1967, Bill received a call to enter full time ministry at the Star Gospel Mission in Charleston, South Carolina. There he ministered for a year and a half to devastated men who had lost everything in life, mainly through the use of alcohol. Bill and Helen were in charge of youth camps for underprivileged children. While at the mission, they also did ministry on ships coming in from around the world.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

During these days, Bill also had the opportunity to get involved in prison ministry.

It was during this time that Bill met Rev. David A. McKenzie, through Rev. George Bass and Rev. Auzzie Williams. Rev. McKenzie, who was the Superintendent of the South Carolina Conference of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, invited Bill to become a part of the Conference. Although Bill had been ordained through an independent organization, he went by the conference requirements. Bill was licensed to preach in the South Carolina Conference in 1968 and ordained two years later in 1970.

Bill was first assigned to the Wando Pentecostal Holiness Church and served there from 1968 until 1971. He later went to pastor the Springfield Pentecostal Holiness Church in Laurinburg, North Carolina, on the third Sunday of February, 1971 and has remained as pastor forty‑four years. He still remembers his first sermon at Springfield. His text was taken from Proverbs 23:17‑18. In Bill’s own words, he said, “What a journey it has been here, and I don’t even want to think about how my life would have been without God allowing me to come to the Springfield Pentecostal Holiness Church. I am almost “75 years young” now. I am still looking up and praising God for His love, His mercy, and His grace”. Bill was superannuated in 2003, but he continues very active in pastoral ministry.

During his ministry in the Pentecostal Holiness Church, Bill has served as District Director both in the Charleston and in the Laurinburg Districts. In the Laurinburg District, serving on the District

Ministry Team for many years, he became known by many, as “Mr. Missions”. Bill presently serves on the standing Conference Memoirs Committee, the Archives Ministry Department, and as a member of the Laurinburg District Ministry Team.

In the Laurinburg area, Bill has served for many years as a volunteer chaplain at First Health Regional Hospital in Moore County, North Carolina. It has been during this time that he has been able to assist and help numbers of individuals and families.

It is interesting to note that Bill has served as a volunteer in the Woodmen of the World Organization. For twenty-five years, he served as the President of the Woodmen of the World in Laurinburg, North Carolina. His involvement in the Woodmen has included work in Woodmen Youth Camps. He has served on the Woodmen State Board as State Chaplain. Bill has also served as District President and as a delegate both to state and national Woodmen of the World conventions.

Bill will let you know right quickly that he is from the “old school,” and he continues to dress (especially with his tie) and preach that way in spite of all the changes that have taken place over the years.

Two of Bill’s favorite past times are playing golf and watching “old cowboy westerns”. He has served on the Cowboy Board in North Carolina since 1985. Bill loves life, and he loves ministry. His life’s goal is to “serve God faithfully”.
