1 Spring/Summer 2013 Forewords from the Head Dear DoCS Department, Summer and vacations are upon us. If you are around we hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social on Thursday, July 25 th , 3-4:30 pm, in Blue Commons. It has been an incredibly busy spring and I want to thank you for your patience with all the disruptions and the endless interview schedule. The good news is that we have some really talented individuals joining our department. The sad news is that we have said good bye to some long time friends and colleagues. Whether they are headed for retirement or another academic adventure, I wish them the best. If we have seemed a bit scattered, there is a reason. Most of you have found your way to the 3 rd floor D wing, where we are working diligently until the renovations in the Department Head suite are complete. We are due to be back to the 2 nd floor B section by mid-late July, so be prepared to see us back in boxes soon. Hopefully, they will all make the double transport. (I haven’t seen my E-K files since the first move, but I trust they are in storage somewhere.) Enjoy your summer vacations and rest up. The new students arrive August 8 th and the College will be halfway into the transition to 400 students. The surgery laboratory will now be tested to see if we planned adequately. At the end of August, Dr. Atkins will be retiring, so look for a party invitation. We will send him off with a bang! Don’t worry: he’s only moving to the first floor and a relaxed schedule. Forewords from the Head Dear DoCS Department, Summer and vacations are upon us. If you are around we hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social on Thursday, July 25th, 3-4:30 pm, in Blue Commons. It has been an incredibly busy spring and I want to thank you for your patience with all the disruptions and

the endless interview schedule. The good news is that we have some really talented individuals joining our department. The sad news is that we have said good bye to some long time friends and colleagues. Whether they are headed for retirement or another academic adventure, I wish them the best. If we have seemed a bit scattered, there is a reason. Most of you have found your way to the 3rd floor D wing, where we are working diligently until the renovations in the Department Head suite are complete. We are due to be back to the 2nd floor B section by mid-late July, so be prepared to see us back in boxes soon. Hopefully, they will all make the double transport. (I haven’t seen my E-K files since the first move, but I trust they are in storage somewhere.) Enjoy your summer vacations and rest up. The new students arrive August 8th and the College will be halfway into the transition to 400 students. The surgery laboratory will now be tested to see if we planned adequately. At the end of August, Dr. Atkins will be retiring, so look for a party invitation. We will send him off with a bang! Don’t worry: he’s only moving to the first floor and a relaxed schedule. Lizette

Who Am I Rose Caspar, Research Specialist Hello, my name is Rose Caspar. In February, I joined Dr. Marlene Hauck’s Oncology laboratory as her Research Specialist after first working at CVM for Dr. Van Wettere in the department of PHP. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in cancer research with Dr. Hauck. My background at NCSU includes focuses in immunology, microbiology and genetics. I did my Master’s degree in the Poultry Science Department. After graduating, I spent some time at Pfizer where I was part of a team focused on improving biodevices being used in the Poultry Industry for vaccination. That was enjoyable and I learned a lot, but I am pleased to be back at NCSU. Outside of the vet school, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I got married a little over a year ago, and I love the life change! I am lately quite involved in the start-up of a new church in Angier, and it is definitely worth my time since I’m passionate about my faith in Jesus! I’m also quite outdoorsy. A perfect day would involve fishing, the beach, the lake, or a jog through the woods. Currently I have no pets (lost a beloved dog to a mast cell tumor a few weeks ago), but hopefully will not be waiting too long for that!

Sarah Wall, Research Specialist Hello, my name is Sarah Wall. I have always had an interest in medicine and research, even as a small child. I went to college at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC and graduated in 2003 with a BS in Biology. I started working in a research lab sequencing HOX gene clusters in 1999 and at the medical school in allergy and asthma research in 2000. It was a wonderful experience and I found myself falling in love with animals and the research that we can do to help them and ourselves. When I graduated I worked for a year with a small animal practice but I longed for pipettes, research and the basement; I guess because I truly needed to be back in the academic arena working in research. In 2004, I was hired as the veterinary assistant in LAR and I worked there for 9 years managing the veterinary records, animal treatments, technical staff and eventually CPL too. I left LAR in February of this year to join the orthopedic and soft tissue surgeons (Drs. Lascelles, Marcellin-Little, Roe, Mathews, Risselada) as a research technician. I am really enjoying the new experiences and learning so much. I have been involved in a few projects since I started and there are many more to come. In addition to my work life, I was married last October and we are expecting our first child in August. We also have three dogs, Katie, Daisy and Tia (Katie and Tia are in the picture- we didn’t have Daisy yet) and five cats, Lemur, Calvin, Fred, Hannah and Clovis Anne. It looks like we have our hands full, but we love it. In my spare time I like to help my dad on his hobby farm, spend time with my friends and work around our house doing gardening, painting and decorating.
