GREAT VALLEY FOOTBALLGREAT VALLEY FOOTBALLTEAM POLICYTEAM POLICY

PRIORITIESPRIORITIES:1. FAITH2. FAMILY3. ACADEMICS4. FOOTBALL5. EVERYTHING ELSE

TEAM POLICY – ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND EXPECTATIONSTEAM POLICY – ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND EXPECTATIONS

Do not get involved with or do anything that would ever embarrass or compromise the integrity of the players or coaches of our team. This includes non-school hours. Everything you do reflects on you, your family, your school, your team, your teammates, and your coaches. Any violation of this policy can result in suspension or expulsion from the team.

A. Pride - As a Great Valley Patriot, taking Pride in our program is the key in building Great Valley football to the heights that we want it to reach. Our Standards are high and expected to be followed at all times.

B. Character – The true character of a man can be measured by how he carries himself when no one is looking. We take pride in our character and being a morally sound person. Reputation is what people think of you, Character is the true measure of the man.

C. Honor and Integrity – No matter how we perform on and off the field, we will carry ourselves with honor and integrity. We must all look at the Man in the Mirror at the end of the day and make sure that we are proud of the person we see.

D. Respect – We all are working together to be the best football program we can be. Believe that all coaching decisions are made in the view of what is best for the team. We will not compromise the success of the team for one individual.

E. Discipline and Effort – It takes 0% skill to give 100% effort. Do your best at all times. Effort is the one constant that our

7

Page 8: Springfield Cougars Football - HomeTeamsONLINEmedia.hometeamsonline.com › photos › football › GVPA… · Web viewInjury Prevention – Football is a tough, physical game. The

program is based on and the one area where your coaches will give no slack. Effort is a demand and will not be compromised.

F. Sacrifice and Unselfishness – The team always comes before the individual. Everyone will have a role, and that role needs to be accepted and recognized as important by all. We achieve all things together and everyone is a contributing member of our accomplishments. All are equal – scout team players through all-state players.

TEAM POLICY – SPECIFIC AREASTEAM POLICY – SPECIFIC AREAS

A. Classroom – As a student you will conduct yourself as a gentleman and show respect to your teachers and classmates. Do not allow a poor attitude, misbehavior, or poor attendance get you into trouble. Coaches are not going to get you out of trouble. You are responsible for your academic performance and behavior. Remember, you are a STUDENT-athlete.

B. On the Field – We will conduct ourselves on the field with honor and class at all times.

C. Eligibility – We will follow all PIAA and Great Valley eligibility requirements. It is your responsibility to maintain those standards.

D. Practice – If you do not practice, you will not play.a. Always be on time. Early is on time; on time is late.b. Never miss (coaches exceptions)c. If you absolutely must miss, call/email the head coach or

position coachd. Unexcused absence – Will not play that week (multiple

unexcused absences may be cause for dismissal from team)

e. Late to practice (1 minute or 1 hour) – coach’s discretionf. All injuries must be checked out by schools athletic trainer.

Athletic trainer is only person to excuse player from practice for an injury. Players/Parents do not self diagnose.

i. If there is any issue beyond the athletic trainer’s level, she will immediately pass it along to the appropriate doctor or specialist.

g. If you do not practice, you are still expected to be at practice with your position coach and position group.

h. In order to play, you must practice.

E. Equipment/Locker Room – This is our facility. We will treat the locker room and our equipment like it was our own. As in all things, we will take pride in our equipment and how our locker room looks. You are responsible for all equipment given to you and must pay for all lost/stolen equipment. Do not leave equipment out.

F. Offseason Training – You are encouraged to play as many sports as possible. If you are not involved in a current sport, our expectation is that you are in the weight room and involved in our weight training program.

a. Injury Prevention – Football is a tough, physical game. The weight room is primarily used to prepare your body for the wear and tear of a football season.

b. Getting on the field – Unlike other sports, offseason work in football focuses on preparing physically for the season, not actually playing the game. If you didn’t pick up a basketball during the basketball offseason, how much better will you be the next year? Our offseason is the weight room!!

c. Playing time – Not attending the weight room will result in less playing time. It is not a punishment. It is a fact of life. If you are equal to another player and he dedicates himself to the offseason program and you do not, who is going to be more prepared? The best player will play, but the player who pushes his limits in the offseason will put himself in a better position.

d. Building a Team – The offseason program will develop a team through its intensity and the players shared experience. Pushing each other physically and mentally will help create a bond, a sense of being one, which will payoff when the going gets tough during the season.

e. Championships – Championships on the field are the validation of hard work throughout the year. Championships are earned through a relentless pursuit of excellence starting in January of each year and culminating in defeating your opponents in November. There is no magic wand and no easy path. Championships are forged in the weight room!

9

TEAM POLICY – PERSONAL CONDUCTTEAM POLICY – PERSONAL CONDUCT

A. Drugs and Alcohol – Drugs and alcohol are expressly prohibited by school and team policy and are subject to school punishment. Do not put yourself in a position to hurt yourself and the team. Being under the influence damages your ability to be physically fit and healthy and impacts your ability to be at your best. No Tolerance!!

B. School Policies – All policies in the student handbook and athletic department apply to our football program. We want to be leaders on the field and in the school building. Be a model for the rest of your classmates to follow, and be the standard by which all Great Valley students are measured.

C. Jewelry and Clothing – No jewelry at football activities – practice, games, weight room, meetings, etc. Clothing – no one wants to see your boxers.

D. Cell Phones – No cell phones at team functions including the weight room, meetings, practices, etc. That includes in the locker room before games or on the bus before games.

TEAM POLICY – SMALL DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCETEAM POLICY – SMALL DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

A. Great players hate to lose more than they like to winB. Great players compare themselves to the best, not to just

anyoneC. Be in the locker room earlyD. Look at your coaches and teachers in the eye when they talk to

youE. Never walk on the fieldF. Stand Tall on the field or the weight roomG. Always wear your helmetH. A successful person learns to get by with less praise than he

deservesI. Our team does not exist to improve your personal statisticsJ. Personal goals will never come before team goalsK. Teams can accomplish amazing feats when no one cares who

gets the credit.L. True winners are not content with yesterday’s victoriesM. Champions focus on where they are going, not where they have

TEAM POLICY – DISCIPLINETEAM POLICY – DISCIPLINE

It is a privilege to be a member of the Great Valley Football Program, it is not a right. Each member of the team has earned that status. You and I are not more important than the team. If I ever have to choose between you and the team, I will choose the team.

performance7. Communicating with coaches on an informal

Captains, leadership committee members and coaches will work through these challenges together.

Captains are the direct liaison with the coaches. The Leadership Committee helps the Captains with all of their duties and also acts as a liaison with the coaches. The Leadership Committee as a whole has a responsibility to work together for the betterment of the team and the program.

GOAL SETTINGGOAL SETTING

GUIDE TO GOAL SETTINGGUIDE TO GOAL SETTING

Statistics have shown that individuals who set goals and look at them and reflect on them are more likely to be successful. It is important that goals are written, realistic, achievable and visible.

“Goals that are not written down are just wishes.” -- Unknown

Goals should be set high. Stretch yourself! Do not set easily achievable goals. You learn and achieve much by striving to reach your goal, not just in attaining your goal.

“The principle is competing against yourself. It’s about self improvement, about being better than you were the day before.” -

Steve Young

By posting your goals in a visible area, an area you will see often, it is a constant reminder for you. Also, it is imperative that you reflect on your goals and think about what you have done to achieve it, and what you will continue to do in the future to ensure you achieve it.

“Goals determine what you’re going to be” – Julius Irving

Write at least three goals – 1. Academic goal2. Team goal3. Individual goal

“Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools.” -- Napoleon

“How am I going to make our team and our school a better place in the next year?”

All Players – Complete your goal sheet below. Every goal should be measurable, attainable and only reachable through dedication and hard work. Each goal must also have a plan of action to achieve the goal – Be specific. Goals without a plan to achieve them are wasted dreams.

GREAT VALLEY PATRIOT PARENTSGREAT VALLEY PATRIOT PARENTS1. We coach our players like they are our sons

2. We coach our players to be men of empathy, integrity, and courage.

3. We coach hard, loud, and aggressive

4. Football is a tough, loud, disciplined, and emotional game – we coach the same way.

5. We require the undivided attention of the players

6. Team always comes first. We have no stars.

7. We demand and require discipline, some times more than you may.

8. We do not play athletes to make them and/or parents happy. We play athletes because:

A. They work hardB. They have a positive attitudeC. They add value to our teamD. They understand their unique roles on the teamE. Their goal is to make us a better teamF. They get the job done better than someone else

9. Parent’s influence or position makes no difference

10. Best college position if it’s best for our team

11. We evaluate players on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis

12. Lack of weight room and offseason conditioning does effect playing time. It is not punishment, it is reality. It is the realization that players who complete our off season program are better conditioned mentally and physically for the rigors of the football season.

13. Please participate in your sons’ high school football experience. The Booster’s club supports your sons experiences in the football program.

WINNERS AND LOSERSWINNERS AND LOSERS(adapted from Sydney Harris)

A WINNER endeavors to make his community better … a LOSER selfishly takes what he wants without giving of himself.

A WINNER makes commitments … a LOSER makes promises.

When a WINNER makes a mistake, he says ‘I was wrong!’ …when a LOSER makes a mistake he says ‘it wasn’t my fault!’

A WINNER listens … a LOSER just waits until it’s his turn to talk.

When a WINNER works harder than a loser, he has more time … a LOSER is always ‘too busy’ to do what is necessary

A WINNER isn’t afraid of losing as much as a LOSER is afraid of winning.

A WINNER goes through a problem … a LOSER goes around it and never gets past it.

A WINNER respects those who are superior to him and tries to learn something from them … a LOSER resents those who are superior and tries to find chinks in their armor.

A WINNER knows what to fight for and what to compromise on … a LOSER compromises on what he shouldn’t and fights for what isn’t worth fighting about.

A WINNER shows he’s sorry by making up for it … a LOSER says ‘I’m sorry’ but does the same thing next time.

A WINNER is sensitive to the atmosphere around him … a LOSER is sensitive only to his own feelings.

A LOSER blames ‘politics’ or ‘favoritism’ for his failures … a WINNER would rather blame himself than others, but doesn’t waste time on any kind of blame!

A WINNER acts the same toward those who can be helpful and those who can’t … a LOSER fawns on the powerful and snubs the weak.

RECRUITINGRECRUITING

1. Players will play best position for the team’s success, not their best position in college. Skill is transferrable and college coaches understand that concept.

2. An athlete with both academic success and athletic performance is the most recruitable for college coaches

3. Spring of junior year players must sign up for the NCAA Clearinghouse – www.eligibilitycenter.org

There is a sliding scale for NCAA Eligibility based on an athletes' SAT score and his GPA. The lower an athletes GPA, the higher the SAT score needed for eligibility

Starting in 2016, NCAA core requirements include, 16 core courses, minimum GPA of 2.3 (core), graduation, and requisite SAT/ACT score based on sliding scale

Academic redshirt required for any student-athlete from 2.0-2.3 GPA and requisite SAT/ACT score. May receive scholarship and practice, but no competition first semester in college.

4. Recommended that athletes take the SAT’s/ACT’s in the spring of their junior year

Testing Info - www.collegeboard.com Questions – see guidance counselor/college counselor.

Don’t wait!

5. Athletes should complete applications to schools of academic interest and complete financial aid information (www.fafsa.gov) as needed with their guidance counselor.

6. My role and the recruiting process: At the end of each season, players make highlight films on

Hudl. I review and make changes to it as needed.o 4-6 minutes long with best plays first.

Film will be sent out through Hudl as early as sophomore year for those student-athletes who warrant it.

I will contact college coaches in the Winter/Spring recruiting period for juniors.

ATTITUDEATTITUDE

“The longer I live the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than

the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company … a church … a team … or a home the remarkable

thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past … we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot

change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude … I am convinced that life is

10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you … We are in charge of our Attitudes”

MAN IN THE GLASSMAN IN THE GLASS

When you get what you want in your struggle for selfAnd the world makes you king for a day,Just go to the mirror and look at yourself

And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father or mother or wifeWhose judgment upon you must pass.

The fellow whose verdict counts most in your lifeIs the one staring back from the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plumAnd think you’re a wonderful guy.

But the man in the glass says you’re only a bumIf you can’t look him straight in the eye.

He’s the fellow to please-never mind all the rest,For he’s with you clear to the end.

And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult testIf the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of yearsAnd get pats on the back as you pass.

But your final reward will be heartache and tearsIf you’ve cheated the man in the glass.
