Johnston Marklee,

of Los Angeles, is one of the most innovative architectural firms of our time. their buildings generate regular articles in

all the major architectural magazines and are mentioned in virtually every book concerning contemporary architecture.

Ai Weiwei chose this particular firm some years ago for his legendary Ordos Project, which will bring together 100 build-

ings of the of the world’s best architects. We are especially happy to publish the world’s first monography about

Johnston Marklee together with reto Geiser, a Swiss architectural theoretician and internationally renown book

designer. if you appreciate the cover photo of our preview then you will certainly draw plenty of joy from this book.

Building with straw

is still exotic, but is increasingly becoming one of the most ecological building techniques on a supra-regional basis,

which is also completely reliable in terms of building times and costs. Additionally, the structural and physical

characteristics are also quite impressive. One of the leading experts of this field is Werner Schmidt out of Switzer-

land. his straw buildings are so exemplary that they are also shown in children’s television programs about him and

his buildings. We have the good fortune in obtaining Andrea bocco Guarneri as our author for this book. it was in

co-operation with him that many years ago we have published the first monography about bernard rudofsky

(unfortunately this is out of stock).

Venice Biennale of Architecture

this year, as in every other year, the Architecture biennale in Venice will again take place. the Austrian commissioner

Arno ritter, has come up with something completely different: together with Wolfgang tschapeller, they will be present-

ing not singular architects and their buildings, but a future lab with „reports From A city Without Architecture“ in the

Austrian Pavilion. regretably, due to the time schedule and in spite of a very quick co-operation agreement, it was not

possible to include the book into our preview. however, don’t worry, our representatives have more information for you.

My advice: don‘t forget to order the accompanying book for the exhibition on time, as this edition is strictly limited

due to the precious material contained in the cover and the special bibliophilic design. there will be absolutely no

possibilities for future reproductions!

Quality and innovation

are our main motivations. We therefore manage to consistently establish partnerships with prominent personalities.

nevertheless, the road between writing rooms, studios, museums and the bookshops is often a long one. this is

also the case with the content of the books. unfortunately, it takes some time to understand why certain books are

particularly precious. i am still convinced that this important booktrading attribute will not, even nowadays, be

missing the section on architecture in a good bookstore.

i wish you much success with our autumn program and that you will also take great pleasure in skimming

the tugendhat house in brno (czech repub-lic) was named by uneScO in 2001 as one of the most important buildings of modern architecture and as a World heritage Site.
