Dale VanWieren # 519 Gordon Biersch Brewery Techne Travels With The Beerhunter - McMenamin’s 4 the KEG Spring 2017 ECBA I left off last issue in Bend Oregon singing the praises of McMenamins Old St. Francis School. I really need to spend a little time discussing the McMenamin operations in general, because they are ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest, and universally cool. Brian McMenamin was a political science major and pre-law in college. Rather than go into law, he joined his brother Mike in operating a pub and took an interest in brewing. He then put his education to good use along with Kurt and Rob Widmer and several other Oregon pioneers lobbying the Oregon legislature to legalize the sale of alcohol at the location it was produced. With the legalization of brewpubs in 1985, Brian and his brother Mike were all in. Operating over 50 breweries, pubs, and entertainment venues in Oregon and Washington, McMenamins is one of the largest restaurant chains in America. But don’t be fooled by that word “chain”. Yes they are corporately linked entities, but every one is unique and fanciful. One of the first brewpubs Leslie and I visited on an early trip to Oregon was McMenamins Lighthouse Brewpub on the Oregon coast in Lincoln City. Opened in 1986, it was a nice comfy little pub at the time, but that was before the McMenamins found their groove. Looking at pictures of it as it is today with its funky seafaring décor, I would never recognize it. Brian McMenamin has been nationally praised as a philanthropist and preservationist. Nine of their locations are on the National Register of Historic Places, including such diverse locales as a church (Mission Theatre & Pub), a grand movie theatre (Bagdad Theatre), a ballroom (The Crystal Ballroom), a brothel (Olympic Club Hotel) and a school (The Kennedy School). One of their best known locations is the Edgefield, the former Multinomah County Poor Farm, a destination resort with 100 hotel rooms, a brewery, a winery, and a distillery. I bought a bottle of their Monkey Puzzle Whiskey, made with hops and honey, and it was delicious. I think I’d like to take a trip and visit all of the McMenamins, but there was only so much time. We apparently were in a mood to be schooled on this trip, as in addition to the Old St. Francis School, we visited the Kennedy School in Portland, and the Anderson School in Bothel Washington. Opened in 1915 as an elementary school, the Kennedy School encourages sleeping in class, with 57 guest rooms, some of which are equipped with the original chalk boards. The cafeteria is a large dining space, the boiler room a bar, the auditorium houses a movie theatre where you can have your beer and burger delivered to your seat, and detention a cigar bar. In a twist on the old jokes about you only being a temporary container for the beer between the glass and the rest room, the brewhouse is in a former lavatory.

Travels With The Beerhunter - McMenamin’s

I left off last issue in Bend Oregon singingthe praises of McMenamins Old St. Francis School. I reallyneed to spend a little time discussing the McMenaminoperations in general, because they are ubiquitous in thePacific Northwest, and universally cool. One of the first brewpubs Leslie and I visited onan early trip to Oregon was McMenamins LighthouseBrewpub on the Oregon coast in Lincoln City. The ECBA LIBRARY now contains over 550 titles in Books, video, audio and CDROM formats. A catalogue of

Unavoidably, we arrived at the Anderson School at thepeak of dinner hour on a Saturday night. The huge sprawling fiveacre high school campus must have had a thousand students in itsday, and I think they were all back for dinner that night.Nevertheless, with several dining venues to choose from, we weresoon seated and enjoying a beer (and a diet coke). We ate in theformer woodshop, which also houses the 10 bbl brew house.Outside in the garden area, a wedding was going on. The schoolfeatures hotel rooms, a movie theatre, and multiple bars, butsomehow we missed the tiki bar, where you can swim in a lagoonwhile enjoying a beer or drink.

Of course, Portland and Seattle are about as beer centric apair of cities as you will ever find, and there is lots to see anddrink besides McMenamins. We were disappointed in theBridgeport Brewing Co., which 30 years ago was a funky bar in asort of run down warehouse area, but now is a rather blandrestaurant in a gentrified warehouse area. Same good beer though.I especially liked the Back Pedal Brewing Co. The nano breweryis tucked away behind the garage where their pedal car brew toursdepart from. They had some good brews, nice folks, and a funvibe. Across the bridge in Vancouver WA I loved the HeathenBrewing Company for its art work. Reindeer Tears (out of seasonunfortunately) features a satanic Santa wringing reindeer so thattheir tears fill the beer bottles.

There were many other notable stops on the way homebut those are tales for another day, and Ohio looms before us. Ishould mention however the walking tour of breweries in BillingsMontana. Angry Hanks, Carters, Thirsty Street, Yellowstone,Montana, and Uberbrew (GABF small brewpub of the year) are allon a one mile circuit. That was the only time on our severalthousand mile drive that Leslie had to take the wheel to return tothe hotel!

See you all at the convention.

ECBA member, and Canadianbreweriana collector Larry Sherk hascompiled a beautifully executedtribute to Canadian brewing historythrough his collection of labels. At317 pages, the 8” x 9” book is chockfull of historic brands, and detailedlabel artwork. Each 2-page spreadfeatures a label with informationabout the brand and brewery. Iexpect these to be available at thisyears convention, or Larry may becontacted through the ECBA Roster. New addition to the ECBA Library
