We first saw the Habisphere on display at the Interzoo show in 2014 and instantly liked it. This stylish curve fronted glass tank will appeal to children and is a great desktop habitat for invertebrates and other species that do not need UVB. There is a reversible desert/jungle background and removable back panel. The ventilated top incorporates LED lighting, white for day time and blue for night.

This neat LED lighting unit is designed to fasten to the outside of glass terrariums. The special UVA emitting LEDs allow nocturnal viewing and make scorpions fluoresce making fascinating viewing for keepers.

Turtles are fascinating pets but they are rather messy animals. The new Exo-terra turtle cleaning kit makes tank maintenance a doddle. With an extra long syphon tube, and 2 in 1 scraped waste material and food debris is easily sucked up to keep the water clean.

Ideal for use with chameleons due to their excellent air flow. Rigid frames and metal mesh panels allow the use of external heat and UV lamps including MVs and Metal Halides. The clever integrated tray helps retain substrates.

Lucky Reptile Bright Sun IntroductionNewThere is no doubt that the provision of bright, high quality light is paramount to the health of reptiles and amphibians in captivity. We now know more about the importance of UVA, UVB and visible light to reptiles than we ever have, but there remains much more to be discovered.

Throughout the modern history of reptile keeping, we have seen a series of advances in our understanding of the role of lighting and our ability to provide it. Those keepers who were around in the 80’s and 90’s will remember using plant growing tubes along with “black lights” to try and provide sufficient UV as there

were no UVB emitting fluorescent tubes designed specifically for reptiles. Linear fluorescent tubes are the most popular method of providing UVB to reptiles, but recently the introduction of T5 format reptile bulbs means this trend will continue.

There are solutions available however that can provide UV light, visible light and heat from one bulb. These bulbs seek to mimic the action of the sun by being able to create a “basking zone” containing all three of these elements. One such solution is the metal halide “Bright Sun” bulbs from Lucky Reptile. Metal halide bulbs have several advantages over other UV lighting systems.

They provide much brighter visible light which looks very natural They provide high levels of UVB and UVA at the optimum wavelength for reptiles They are available in a range of wattages from 35w to 150w, in spot and flood formats They produce short wavelength infra-red radiation similar to the sun They are available in Jungle and Desert models which have carefully selected light output tailored to the different environments.

These lamps are extremely popular on the continent but are largely undiscovered in the UK. This is probably due to their perceived cost, and the fact that in the UK we tend to favour wooden rather than glass terrariums. This trend is changing however, with more and more people switching to glass. Because metal halide bulbs cannot be controlled with a thermostat, other than an off/off thermostat to prevent overheating, they are typically used resting on the mesh lid of glass terrariums or in large enclosures with good ventilation where overheating is not an issue.

Like fluorescent tubes, a Bright Sun bulb needs an external ballast which is connected to a Lucky Reptile Thermosocket holder in order to operate. This kit represents quite an investment, but does provide both heat and light which would normally need separate equipment. As usual, UV output should be monitored and bulbs replaced as needed.

UVB is important for vitamin D3 synthesis and the visible light and UVA is important for the behaviour and activity of the animals, all of which can improve captive breeding success. Bright Suns are also excellent for plant growth and these bulbs are ideal for bio-active terrariums. Care should be taken that the plants don’t grow too close to the bulb though, or they will get scorched.

Bio-active set ups are the growing trend in reptile keeping, with everything from frogs, crested geckos, snakes and bearded dragons able to thrive in a more natural environment. This is hardly surprising as the introduction of a natural substrate, growing plants and commensal organisms creates a mini ecosystem reminiscent of the wild environment. This new era of reptile keeping also provides shops with an ideal opportunity to expand their product range and get new sales.

Our highly successful airplant range has also been extended to include four sizes of ready-made displays of airplants fixed to cork bark. These “take away” solutions are ideal for those looking to create an attractive set up with no fuss.

Although airplants do not need soil, and in fact will rot if they are planted like a traditional plant, most terrarium plants do need a suitable soil substrate. This not only has to meet the needs of the plant, but also provide a habitat for small soil living organisms, the so called commensal “clean-up crew” such as wood lice, earthworms, springtails and fungi and bacteria. ProRep’s new Bio-Life substrate is specifically designed to meet these exacting needs and is a blend of high quality ingredients with the ideal properties and open structure for promoting healthy root growth in a “jungle” setting. Bioactive substrates should be spot cleaned or only part changed so that they can develop into a living ecosystem where waste materials are naturally broken down by the developing populations of invertebrates and micro-organisms.

Whiteworms (Enchytraeus albidus) are tiny free living worms that grow to around 3-4cm in length. They are a great food for many species of amphibian, reptile as well as fish, but are especially useful for newly metamorphosed frogs, toads, newts and salamanders.

Whiteworms can also be used in bio-active set-ups to help break down waste and recycle nutrients. They are supplied ready to use as a mixture of sizes and eggs in a culture medium.

Woodlice are a great food for a number of reasons. They have a calcium rich exoskeleton, are non-aggressive and readily taken by a range of small reptiles and amphibians. Additionally, they can form an important part of the “clean up crew” in tropical bio-active set-ups, feeding on organic waste in the terrarium. They reproduce naturally in the

terrarium, providing there is sufficient hiding places for them and will providing a constant source of food for the occupants. The species of woodlouse we supply is a small, grey tropical species (Trichorina species) that grows to around 8mm long.
