Four Way Test

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendship?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Once again we found ourselves helping out at the Friends of Cats no-kill shelter

near El Cajon. The shelter picks up stray and abandoned cats, as well as serving

as a home where owners can let their cats live out their natural lives when they

are no longer able to care for them. There, we helped with the cat laundry by

hanging some items up to dry and folding some others. While we were hanging

the laundry, we discovered that time had ruined some of the lines, and that they

did not have replacements. Even so, we were able to provide some quick fixes to

save the laundry! After this, were able to spend some time cuddling the cute

creatures (and avoiding some not-so-cute cattitudes in others).

Greyhound Adoption Center

Our last quarterly food run for the

year was at Lupe’s Taco Shop, by rec-

ommendation of one our members. We

had a lot of fun talking and bonding

over their great food!

Food Run!

For this event, our volunteers went

all the way out to El Cajon to assist

the Greyhound Adoption Center for

the second time this quarter. Their

facility takes in greyhounds that

have been used as track dogs, a life

with very little social interaction. At

the shelter, the dogs learn to behave

like any other household dog, read-

just to human affection, and are

eventually sent off to loving homes

across the country. Volunteers’ tasks

were to pair up and bathe dogs that

were just days away from being sent

to their future families! In addition,

volunteers helped weed out a section

of the shelter’s land to later be used

as a garden. Though temperatures

were incredibly high that day, our

volunteers powered through and

cleared most of the area. Splashing

around with the Greyhounds proved

to be a fantastic relief from the day’s

heat and a productive way to reener-

gize before going back to weeding.

Overall, Rotaractors and the dogs

had a blast together!

As part of the Annual Creek to Bay

Cleanup that is hosted annually on

Earth Day, we helped clean up Torrey

Pines Beach. We were only a few out

of over 6,500 volunteers who helped

clean and beautify over 100 other

sites around San Diego as part of the

annual cleanup. Collectively,

volunteers picked up 170,000 lbs of

trash. We found some interesting

trash, like a pair of glasses, and had

fun drawing in the sand after the

event.

Juniper Canyon

Creek to Bay Cleanup

To continue our efforts towards

environmental service, our club headed

out to Juniper Canyon near South Park

to do some nature work. In a just a little

over three hours, we planted more than

70 native plants! Then we went around

and secured each plant with plastic

cones so they would have the chance to

grow before being nibbled at. The goal of

this event was to help secure the soil in

place to prevent erosion of the canyon

and luckily, the heat didn't stop us from

being successful!

La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club’s

4th Annual Quintessential Festival was

held on Saturday, April 22nd at Nobel

Park this year, and it was most certainly

San Diego’s best kept secret! Our 21+

Rotaractors had to opportunity of

attending the event and volunteered to

help tear down when the event ended.

We also got to meet the brewers and

distillers, as well as try samples, from

30+ of San Diego’s best craft breweries,

wineries, and distilleries. Also at the event was the San Diego Blood Bank for

those wanted to donate blood at the event. The event brought in 630+ attendees

and $27,000+ that will benefit more than 45 charity partners of LJGT Rotary

Club. What a success!

For our first event of Spring Quarter,

we helped San Diego Parks and Rec-

reation with a spring-themed egg

hunt. We set up by “hiding” the candy

filled eggs throughout a field, then

ran booths and guarded the eggs dur-

ing the event. Justin and Josh wore

the bunny suit! After all the time it

took to set up, the kids tore through

the field in mere minutes, and then

we got started on clean up. It was a

really fun event and a great way to

start the quarter!

Everyone knows that as UCSD students it’s

essentially a requirement to go to the beach

as much as possible, so for this quarter’s club

social Rotaract went to the beach! We hosted

a bonfire at Mission Bay on May 20th that

started at 7pm. At the bonfire we set up a

table full of snacks and food. Everyone had a

great time roasting hot dogs and

marshmallows over the fire while spending

the evening with friends. As the night

continued we danced, played games on the

beach and did some stargazing. It was a great

way to relax and destress during midterms.

Overall it was a lovely way to enjoy San

Diego’s beautiful beaches while also spending

quality time with fellow Rotaractors.

Every year UC San Diego hosts Triton Day.

Newly admitted UCSD students are invited

to come see what UCSD has to offer. Rotaract

tabled at several locations during Triton Day.

Rotaractors talked with potential incoming

freshmen and their parents about Rotaract,

and about life at UCSD in general!

Bake Sale

We held a bake sale on Monday, May 8th at UCSD’s Library

Walk as a fundraiser for our beneficiary this year, the Malala

Fund. Some of our members made delicious items such as oreo

cheesecake truffles, cookie dough cupcakes, lemon poppyseed

cookies, and more! Many people stopped by our booth to enjoy

these delicious treats. Overall, we raised $218 from this bake

sale.

For our end of the year celebration Rotaract

hosted its annual End of the Year Banquet

with the theme Serving Humanity Around the

World with Rotaract. Each table was decorated

with themes of the different continents. Our

food was thai food provided by a fellow

Rotaractor’s family. During the celebration we

had a powerpoint presentation showing photos

from the events over the year. During the

event we enjoyed looking over the milestone we accomplished as well as big event we hosted such as

WAPI Project. This was also the time to hand out awards to seniors and others who achieved great

things. As a club we also decided to donate money to the Rotarians that have helped us with so much

over the year. We ended the celebration with Rotaractor’s Choice Awards. Fellow members nominated

people and who ever won was given an award. After the presentation, people got dessert and took

photos behind the photo-booth created. Overall the event was a huge success and a great way to

reminisce with fellow members and friends.

On Friday, June 1st 2017, Rotaract at UCSD will be joining the The Preuss School’s Gardening club to

help complete an unfinished project. This project is sponsored by our sponsoring Rotary club, La Jolla

Golden Triangle. In the project, club members, Rotaractors, and Rotarians will come together to com-

plete a keyhole garden. The main tasks for the volunteers will be to place the bricks accordingly as well

as adding soil, and perhaps planting seeds. This project will be very special and exciting to complete as

it would give the graduating seniors at Preuss as well as its other club members the opportunity to see

something they’ve worked on in the past couple years. As service directors, Ben and myself really got to

see how passionate the club and the advisors were about the club. The Preuss school being one of the

top ranked charter schools in

California and nationwide is

known to provide its students

with rigorous coursework in

order to better prepare the

students for college. Having a

garden is an essential element

added to the student’s educa-

tional careers as it serves as a

stress reliever and the key-

hole garden itself would teach

students about its environ-

mental benefits.

Stay cool! Our Rotaractors decided to “let it go” on the ice as a social and fundraising opportuni-

ty at the San Diego Ice Arena during spring quarter. We invited friends and enjoyed a fantastic

evening skating to great music and dancing with an ice cube! Some Rotaractors were well expe-

rienced at skating, others were discovering hidden talents for the first time ever, but the most

important thing was enjoying an evening together and raising proceeds to contribute to our

year’s beneficiary, the Malala Fund.

Rotaract Club at UCSD

Sponsored by international service organization Rotary

International, Rotaract is a service club for young men

and women ages 18+.

Modeled after similar goals and standards to those of

Rotary, Rotaract brings together college students and

young business professionals for the purpose of

humanitarian service, networking, building goodwill

and promoting peace in the world. As one of the fastest-

growing Rotary programs, Rotaract on the

international scale includes more than 8,000 Rotaract

clubs in some 155 countries.

Each individual Rotaract club is sponsored by a local

Rotary club, and are generally either university- or

community-based. Each chapter has its own unique

personality, sometimes with special emphases and

focuses dependent upon the array of members and their

particular interests. Like Rotary, Rotaract clubs meet

on a regular basis, and are nonpolitical, nonreligious

and open to anyone interested.

Rotaractors address many of global and local issues

pertinent to today's society, developing projects that

promote service, build friendship and provide a forum

for cultural exchange.

UCSD Rotaract meets every Tuesday in the

Asante Rooms from 8 PM—9 PM.
