This is the first major exhibition of the artist’s work in Australia and will be accompanied by an exceptional public program to increase the enjoyment and understanding of Spencer’s work. Accompanying the exhibition is a book published by Wakefield Press and a documentary film. Thirty paintings and drawings borrowed both nationally and internationally will tell the story of Stanley Spencer’s muses and the subjects that made this painter one of the greatest forces in British painting. ‘What’s it worth?’ Discovery Day3 August 2016 In conjunction with Tim Wonnacott and Theodore Bruce Appraisal: 10am – 3pm followed by display of top 5 items at 4pm Registration (paid on the day): $10 per item or $25 for three items (max. three items per registrant)

Ever wondered what that painting left to you by Uncle Bob is actually worth? You now have a chance to find out at the Carrick Hill Discovery Day to be conducted by Theodore Bruce Auctions with special guest, Tim Wonnacott, providing the commentary. Up to 3 items per person can be brought to Carrick Hill and the Theodore Bruce Valuation team will identify and value the item(s) for your edification. Tim Wonnacott and James Bruce conducted a similar day at Strathalbyn in 2014 at which over 2,000 people attended, so get in early to guarantee a space on the day.

The Stanley Spencer Art Study Day will provide scholars, students and art lovers alike with an in-depth examination of the artist’s life and work. Lisa Slade, Deputy Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia will chair a host of guest speakers including Ted Gott, Senior Curator of International Art at the NGV; Paul Gough, Pro Vice-Chancellor at RMIT University; Professor Catherine Speck of the University of Adelaide as well as Keynote speaker Carolyn Leder, the Stanley Spencer Gallery’s trustee and curator. Please join us to explore the many themes of Spencer’s oeuvre with some of the foremost national and international Spencer scholars.

Stanley Spencer was not only a master artist but he also played piano and was a prodigious letter writer. The program will include music by Spencer’s favourite composers Mozart, Bach and Beethoven interspersed with readings of his colourful letters about art and his life. Carrick Hill’s own Bechstein grand piano will be used for the recital that will take place in the great hall and viewing the Stanley Spencer exhibition before the concert is included in the ticket price.

Should you wish to dine after the recital which concludes at 7.00pm, our licensed café run by the food business will remain open for dinner offering their full menu. If you want to take advantage of this evening opening of the café please make a booking via Kate Sutherland on 0419 508 463.

State Opera SA is delighted to be partnering with Carrick Hill to create a very special evening of art, food and fabulous music. Young and emerging artist from State Opera’s illustrious James & Diana Ramsay Foundation Opera Program will be joined by soprano Joanna McWaters in a progressive opera evening, which commences on the Terrace, and travels through the interior of the magnificent Carrick Hill residence and out into the marquee for supper. With operatic selections from Verdi, Mozart and Puccini, as well as some specially selected art song and lieder, this will be a cultural partnership made in heaven. With the best of food, art, wine and music, this is an event you cannot afford to miss!

Children’s Spencer Art & Play Day20 November 2016, 11am – 3pm Venue: Stables Lawns, Carrick Hill Registration: $2 per child (Payable on the day. Children must be accompanied by an adult)

The Art & Play Day will provide an opportunity for children to interact with Stanley Spencer artworks in the Carrick Hill collection in the house gallery (house entry will incur an additional charge). The Friends of Carrick Hill have developed activity sheets for children to complete while enjoying the great outdoors. Children’s Poet, Mike Lucas, will be in the Poet’s Corner reciting his original poems about Stanley Spencer. There will be an opportunity for Children to have a photo with Mike in the Poet’s Corner. The Glenelg Brass Band will also be playing in the afternoon.
