With Sadness

Malcolm’s determination that MROA was formed inJanuary 1994, when incredibly 98 MRC members met ina bungalow in Aston Clinton one frosty Sundaymorning.

Malcolm had expected only about 30 to turn up but suchwas his early influence. Even Per Eie attended fromNorway and went home to set up the MROA NordicBranch. Malcolm was always thorough with thepreparation of minutes and membership records and thisinitially helped the Committee to function moreeffectively. After a few years and very regular visits tothe Club, he and his wife, Diana, decided to dispose oftheir four weeks’ timeshare, mainly due to Diana’sworsening arthritis. Malcolm stood down from theCommittee and Harry Cotton succeeded theSecretaryship.

Malcolm and Diana still managed to travel a great dealincluding trips to France and South Africa where theirson, Chris, had relocated his business. In 2007, theydownsized from a beautiful Cotswold stone house inGloucestershire to a 2-bedroom luxury apartment nearNewbury. Sadly, I have also to report thedeath of Harry Cotton, whosucceeded Malcolm Brothers asSecretary to the MROA. Harrydied on the morning of 23 Marchin North Manchester Hospital atthe age of 84. (His wife, Liz, iscurrently in the same hospital.)Harry was MROA's Secretary for many years and he andLiz originally owned timeshare at MRC. I was not able tomeet Harry at AGM's in recent years but I remember himas a very pleasant, approachable man who was so easy totalk to. I am particularly grateful for the help which Harrygave me in the early days of editing this newsletter.

Entertainment and Travel

Á Quintinha (The Herb Garden)

Sadly, it is no longer possible to have a guided tour and teaat the herb garden. Apparently, the proprietor is unable togive her time to this ‘treat’. However, the garden exists toprovide herbs and edible flowers to the hotel and restauranttrade.

Orchids

I have previously spoken of ‘Boa Vista Orchids’, whichhave very large, covered growing areas and well labelledspecimens, both for show and for sale. They also dodelightful afternoon tea and cakes.

Some years ago we visited Jardim Orquidea, (PregettersOrchids), Rua Pita da Silva 37, just below the JardimBotanico, (Botanic Gardens). This has changed a littlesince we first visited some years ago. It is no longerpossible to see the process of propagating orchids, thespace is given over to displaying the orchids in a ‘jungle’setting, together with many other tropical plants. It makesfor a very pleasant walk through these plants and a chanceto see how they best grow in their native state. There is apleasant courtyard tea room and plants can be purchased atthe entrance.

New Attractions

Museu do Brinquedo (Toy Museum)

The toy museum which was situated near the footballstadium is now closed; but much of the collection is nowat the new museum at Armazem do Mercado in RuaLatino Coelho, just behind the Mercado do Lavradoresand one street back from Rua Santa Maria of painted doorfame.

There is a collection of 20,000 items from Portugal,England, Germany and France. There are thousands oftoys such as a big tin soldier collection, steam boats, model cars, planes and wooden games dating back fromthe late nineteenth century to the present day.

ROGER BROOKEWe can confirm that Roger Brook, who was Chairman ofthe Club’s Management Committee, became seriously illduring the Christmas 2014 period. We all wish him a goodrecovery and thank him for his past efforts on behalf ofmembers.

Dolphins!

Many of you will haveseen the various standswhich offer sea trips to seedolphins and other sea-lifeduring your holiday inMadeira. Some make theoffer of a free return trip ifdolphins are not sighted.

In November 2014, we decided, despite a cool day, tobook a trip on a catamaran in the hope of seeing livedolphins for the first time. We had a beautiful trip alongthe coast and out to sea, with relatively calm seas and agreat time was had by all - including watching somevisitors getting very wet from the splashes and having todon increasing amounts of warmer clothing! But ....nodolphins! Hardly believing the generous offer, we returnedto the booking office, with our tickets and announced thatwe hadn’t seen dolphins. On being told that we would notbe back before February 2015, the woman at the desk said,‘that’s ok’ and that we should return then. In February, once again, we set out to sea under slightly ‘choppy andvery cool conditions, but well wrapped up against thewind. Within a very short time, dolphins were sighted bythe crew and we were treated to not just one sighting, butseveral sightings in various locations and the rare treat ofwatching the dolphins ‘playing’ in and out of the bowwave of the catamaran. We were enchanted and willprobably go again!

Carnival 2015

The annual carnivaltook place on Saturday14th February 2015,(also Valentine’s Day!)We were blessed with alovely, dry andreasonably warmevening. Despite therestill being a recession, there was little evidencethat the participants had spared money on the floats andcostumes; they were magnificent. It was a noisy, excitingspectacular with vast crowds out to enjoy the evening.Stands provided beverages, food and balloons to make theparty go with a swing and we all had a lot of fun! .

I Wish You Enough

The following came to light amongst my ‘treasures’. - all thoselittle bits of paper, which get saved. - the Editor

"I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit aliveI wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in lifeappear much bigger.I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.I wish you enough hellos to get you through the finalgood-bye.

FlightsWe understand that British Airways plan to resume flightsto Madeira in the summer of 2015; maybe to compete withTAP and EasyJet.

Pedal PowerWe have discovered several firms which hire out bicycles,

(including guidedtours). The bikes comein several styles and

prices for hire andinclude three-wheelers,

mountain bikes, electric bikes, two-wheeled and three–wheeled scooters;there are also hybrid vehicles for hire at the new harbourcomplex on the Avenida do Mar.

‘Happy Bikes' is situated at the bottom of the hill from theclub; just turn sharp left up the steep lane when you reachthe roundabout. Their prices range from six euros for twohours hire to 26 euros for two days. They can arrange biketours of both the city and the mountains and the priceincludes cycle helmet, gloves, transport of the bicycle, andpersonal accident insurance.

EU NHS card

While renewing her card, Jennie Mathieson found that itread, ‘EXP: 2011. However she had been told that itremained valid until 2016. and if she had a problem, shecould telephone 0044191218999, giving details of herhealth insurance card number and her NHS number tohave it verified. She was also warned that if she appliedthrough the hotel reception, some hotels had anagreement with a private clinic or hospital and to makesure that she was to be sent to a state run hospital orclinic . Fortunately, this is not a problem that has beenexperienced at the Madeira Regency Club. It is always agood idea to make sure that one's travel insurance, healthdocumentation and prescription information is up-to-date and a copy at least is carried on holiday overseas.

Some members may be on EasyJet's e-mailing list but ifyou are not then you may like to know that EasyJet hasopened flight bookings through to the end of February2016.

Food and Drink

There are many recipes for Bolo de Mel, (Christmas‘Honey’ Cake). Most recipes give ingredients andinstructions for several cakes. (They would feed a familyfor a year!)I recently, (successfully), produced a cake by reducingthe original recipe quantities to make just one cake.

Bolo de Mel

Preparation time: 30 minutes plus standing timeCooking time : 25 minutes.

200 g cake flour100g sugar20g mixed peel20 g chopped almonds100 g chopped hazelnuts5 g bicarbonate of soda3ml ground cinnamon **3 ml ground cloves1ml pepperPinch of salt1 ml ground ginger3ml aniseed3 ml allspice25 g sultanas

100 g butter, (or half lard and half butter)100 g treacle*1 lemon (grated rind plus half the juice)1 orange, (grated rind plus half the juice)2ml port or Madeira

Melted butter20 g walnuts10 g almonds

* to make measuring easier, stand the tin in hot water fora short time.** I replaced the aniseed with an equal quantity of mixedspice. The same can be done by replacing the spices witha similar type and quantity of spice - e.g., mixed spice forallspice).Method

1 Place the first 14 ingredients in a mixing bowl.Make a well in the centre. Add the melted butter, treacle, rind, juice and Madeira.

2 Mix to combine and knead well until blended. Themixture should come away from the sides of the bowl. Ifthe mixture is too soft, add a little extra flour to form a stiffdough.3. Brush the top of the batter with melted butter, cover and leave to stand overnight.4 Line a 20cm diameter cake tin with baking paperand grease well.5 Place the mixture in the prepared tin and spreadevenly.6 Arrange the walnuts and almonds in a pattern ontop of the cake.7 Bake in an oven pre-heated to 170 C for 20 to 25minutes. Do not dry out too much. Allow to cool slightlyin the tin, then turn out.8 When completely cold, wrap in cling film and setaside to mature for at least 2 weeks. The cake can be storedfor up to a year in an airtight container.

A Tiny TearoomStrolling back from the Forte in the general direction of thecable-car, we suddenly spotted a little staircase tuckedaway in a building opposite the cable-car. Called Alfazemae Chocolate, they were advertising home-made cake andrefreshments.

It turned out to be a delight. The tea room is very tiny, withseating for about eight, but with two tinier tables on thebalcony, overlooking the park. We chose the orange cakewith our coffee. The other cakes looked equally delicious! It was very moist and delightfully orangey. There is a goodrange of beverages, made to order.

The Nissan Leaf 100% Electric CarBy Deborah

The Leaf is the first automatic I felt I was driving. I driveregularly between Dundee, Scotland and Sussex thereforeit was necessary that I could do this journey with theelectric Leaf. For the three days (14th-17th January

2015), the weather wascold 0°C to 3°C, wetand very windy; allthese factors decreasemileage from an elec-tric vehicle. As the firstday of driving ended, Ifelt as if it was a mod-ern day, top of the

range, car version of the horse and carriage in that when Istopped for a rest I had to tether it to a charge point to getfuelled up and rested for the next part of the journey, before stopping for my break. It felt good to be lookingafter the car first.

The charge machines had a 24-hour contact number on,the operators were helpful, told me which machinesworked, which they could start remotely, if I called themwhen I arrived. I once waited while somebody else usedthe charger and that was for 30 minutes. He warned methat if the cars run completely out of charge they have tostart charging on slow. All the service stations had thevery fast chargers. I realised by the end of the journey upto Scotland that all I needed was 30 minutes each time Istopped to allow about 60 minutes more driving.

Using the charger cost nothing, except possibly an annualcharge of about £20 for the card, which was lent to mewith the car. When I arrived in Dundee, I plugged the carinto the 13 amp house socket. The car was ready to usethe following morning to go to Edinburgh. There was afast charge point at Kinross Services, just before Edin-burgh and another fast charge point at IKEA (Edinburgh),which I used before leaving Edinburgh for Sussex thefollowing morning. The next charge point I aimed for wasLockerbie Johnstonebridge Services. Again, the operatorswere very helpful. The information is all accessible withsmart phones, laptop and tablets but I do not have one.

The journey timing went well - it was going to take justabout an hour to two hours longer than usual. BUT... Imissed the services atBirmingham! To re-cover the situation Icontinued on theM6/M1 for the near-est charging point and

did a shorter than usual charge; then to the A43 to catch upwith the M40 ... there were traffic works with roads shutand non-existent signs. I went back North on the M40 withthe only option but to turn around and try not to make thesame mistake. On the M40 I planned to stop at Beacons-field services. It was not lit up – I went past it, as the M40met with the M25; the M25 was closed and we werediverted onto the M4 and ‘miles left’ was indicating low.I was about to find out what to do when the electricity runslow.

Following signs on the navigational system to the nearestcharger at Heathrow, it was not clear that it was in theairport car park; that it is not one that I had a card for, norwas it a rapid charger. The miles (----) blinking at me fromthe dashboard. I rang the organisation shown on the charg-ing post; they could not help; the door to access the pointsto plug in cannot be opened remotely. I rang the break-down number. They were very helpful and efficient; thecar was picked up within the hour and taken to the nearest

fast charging point. Iwas on my way again. It was not one thingthat led to running outof charge, it was sever-al things –the same aswith a petrol or dieseldriven car. Providedcare is taken it is un-likely to happen often.

I love the car. It driveswell, is quiet, comfort-able, and well propor-tioned; the size is great. The room for rear seatpassengers is sensibleand takes account that

people need leg room in the back of cars. The boot is largeand the gadgets well thought out. I enjoyed watching thetrees growing on the instrument panel as I became moreefficient at preserving the electricity. The B mode I foundbest if engaged when on the flat and going downhill anddisengaged when going uphill or starting off.**

A lovely car – I have decided that this is the car for me.

Editors Note** (B-mode: Engages the regenerative braking systemmore aggressively on downhill slopes, helps reducebrake use, and power is fed back into the systemduring braking).
