Edison does it again! We were just awarded the title of a California Distin-guished School for the third time! This great honor is a testament to the excel-lence that is Edison High School. As a Three A’s School, we continue to strive for excellence in Academics, Arts and Athletics. Our highly qualified staff, sup-portive parents and community, and our dedicated students make up the great team that continues to raise the bar. We thank you for your partnership in this vision. We are proud that on signing day – six-teen of the Charger athletes signed with prestigious colleges and universities. Our all-school musical, Suessical the Musical, was a huge success. The sopho-mores took the High School Exit Exams on March 12th and 13th. Now we are pre-paring for AP exams and STAR testing – just around the corner. Yes – everyone is busy! As a staff we continue to focus on push-ing our students to be “college and career ready” with rigorous and relevant cur-riculum when they graduate. In light of

this challenge, we have implemented many support systems to help your child – Saturday Scholars, math tutoring cen-ter, English lunch tutoring and, of course, our teachers are tutoring Tuesday thru Friday at 8:00 in their classrooms. Make tutorial a “mandatorial” for your student.

As a special re-minder - our juniors need to take the free EAP (Early Assess-ment Program) test included in the Spring STAR test-ing to help them plan for college. If students score high enough on the EAP

it will save families money in required California State University remediation classes. Our staff believes that every student can learn but we are also very aware that stu-dents learn at different speeds and in dif-ferent ways. Please take advantage of all of the services offered by Edison High School. We are proud to be your partners! Dr. D’liese Melendrez Proud to be a Charger!

Success Starts Here “Find a job you like and you add

five days to every week” H. Jackson Browne

As baby boomer parents, we can’t compare the experi-ence we had choosing our careers to the experiences of our children who are looking at potential careers of their own. We graduated from school in a relatively orderly, secure and predictable marketplace. Changing technology, corporate restructuring and the proliferation of new work opportunities are making your son or daughter’s career decisions less predict-able. The key, however, is to encourage your kids to constantly review their interests and discover new op-portunities. What about your child? Does he or she have the skills and experience to survive today’s job market? What about college-bound students? Have they experienced and explored their major field of study to warrant fur-ther education advancement in that particular career area? One way high school students can explore their fu-tures is through the Regional Occupational Program (ROP). Coastline ROP is a public educational service that offers career preparation classes designed to pro-vide students with the technical skills required for par-ticular jobs. Many of the classes include community based internship training in business and industry. Students can earn certification or college placement and /or credit upon successful completion of certain ROP classes. Coastline ROP has 7 classes that ar-ticulate with Orange Coast College. ROP classes are taken as elective credit and are open to students who are at least 16 years of age and a sophomore. For more information on ROP contact Chanel Os-bourne at 714 962-1356 ext 4436 or email [email protected], classes fill quickly! Early registration is highly recommended.

PTA – A Century of Caring

Meet the Faculty Get to know one instructor really well. This creates a feeling of connection and builds a resource for future letter of recommendation for college or job. Ask for detailed feedback on how to improve vs complaining about why I didn’t get a better grade. Take a Mix of Courses ∗ Pique interest with variety vs getting required

courses out of the way. ∗ Large introductory courses are the least

stimulating. ∗ Take small classes. This creates a feeling of con-

nection and increases interaction with faculty. Write, Write, Write ∗ Many short papers are better than one long pa-

per. This allows the chance of midcourse corrections. The more writing the better. Speak Another Language Don’t test out. ∗ Foreign language is the most common favorite

class. * Classes are small. Participation is required. Stu dents work in groups. There is lots of written work. There are frequent quizzes. ∗ Foreign Languages have all the elements that

lead to more learning and more engagement. Consider Time ∗ Set aside an uninterrupted stretch of a few hours.

Small chunks of time are ineffective. Hold the Drum ∗ Get involved in outside activities. Participate at

any level. ∗ Outside involvement is as important as academic

effort. ∗ Jobs do not necessarily interfere with academic

success. The only outside activities which hurt grades were intercollegiate athletics. [Moderation in all things!]

Your National PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer as-sociation working EXCLUSIVELY on behalf of all children and youth. Its founders organized the first meeting on February 17, 1897 in Washington DC and over 2,000 attended. Throughout our history PTA has championed social, health, safety and education issues affecting children and youth.

Arts Education Campaign At Edison High School, your PTSA (the “S” in-cludes students) addresses social, health, safety and education issues through our parent education pro-grams, senior scholarships, leadership training, sup-port of the arts and much more. One of our goals this year is to make sure we get good information to parents in a timely manner. To date we have provided speakers on the topics of Col-lege Preparedness (September), Substance Abuse (REAL Teen Event in November), Community Col-lege Requirements (February) and Raising Teens (Parent-to-Parent Roundtable in February). In addi-tion, we heard from HBUHSD Superintendent, Dr. Greg Plutko, (January) on the direction our school dis-trict is taking to maintain excellence. At every PTSA meeting ASB representatives speak to student activi-ties and our wonderful principal, Dr. D'liese Melen-drez, gives updates on Edison's achievements and suc-cesses with respect to Academics, Arts and the Athlet-ics If you haven't already, we encourage you to join Edison PTSA or stop by our remaining meeting - May 13th to see what's going on! EHS Foundation

The ABC Board is excited to present this year’s ACADEMIC RECOGNITION NIGHT on Tuesday, March 19th at 7:00 in the EHS Gym. Stu-dents are chosen by their teachers for significant success in learning during the 1st semester including great im-provement in academic work, outstanding effort, ex-ceptional help to other students or other demonstrations that the student is worthy of recognition. Students who may not be included in other venues have an opportu-nity on this night for their achievements and efforts to be recognized. ABC has scholarship opportunities for ABC Members: Last year, we awarded over $7,000 in scholarships. Scholarship applications will be available in April-May, 2013.

STUDENT STORE: Parents have been so generous with their donations of school supplies and food items – thank you to all. Stop by the Student Store for sweat-shirts, t-shirts, hats and other Edison-wear. ABC BOARD POSITIONS: We can always use new Board Members to help earn and give away money, stu-dent recognition and scholarships to our Edison High School community. This year, we will be losing a few key Board Members and need some new recruits. Please call or write if you are interested in participating in next year’s Board either as a member-at-large or as an officer. Meetings are once each month. Thank you to all our Charger families who have donated toward our much needed computer lab. Not ready to write a big check? Consider pledging to send us $20 a month. All donations, big or

small, directly benefit the students of Edison High School. Help make our goal a reality by donating today.

We would love to have you join us at the 21st Annual Duck-A-Thon, May 17-19, 2013. Our Foundation runs a booth. Stop by and see us, or better yet, volunteer to help us man it. Email me to be apart of this year’s “Surfin Safari” themed event.

This years semi-finalists: Sarah Baca, Garrett Garcia, Taylor Spaulding, Emma Fitzsimmons and Sammi Rocco (video).

Winners will be announced on Sun-day, April 14th from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the STEM and Arts Career Showcase at the OC Fair-grounds.

As the academic competition season comes to a close the time has come to congratulate and recognize our academic competition teams. Edison Academic com-petition is strong and growing, with opportunities in a variety of areas. In quiz bowl, our oldest and most hal-lowed game, students compete in a game much like Jeopardy, but more difficult. In addition, science has had a huge competition year. Edison competed in Vex Robotics, doubled our medal count in science Olym-piad, and made playoffs in the JPL science bowl on our very first foray into that competition. Finally, Academic Competition also acquired Edison’s first speech and debate team to be registered with the Na-tional Forensics League, a largely student motivated and operated effort. On their first outing, speech and debate had three competitors make finals and qualify for state competition. Below you will find students who love knowledge and competition. Our academic teams:

Anyone who is interested should contact Mr. Boyce at 714-962-1356 ext. 4275 or [email protected]. This is great fundraiser that provides low cost physi-cals and supplements our trainer.
