Welcome to our Spring Season Programme!

Another busy year beckons at The Market Theatre; and this Spring we have some really top class acts and theatre companies for your enjoyment. Drama is high on the list with professional compa-nies bringing us their slants on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, Oscar Wilde’s Importance of Being Earnest and Jane Austen’s Emma. More contemporary drama will feature with Pentabus Theatre Company’s In This Land. And last but by no means least on the drama front, LADS will in April be putting on a new promenade play written especially for them, to be performed at The Master’s House and called The Visit; and in May, Alan Ayck-bourn’s domestic comedy Neighbourhood Watch.

We are also really excited to be hosting in Ledbury the international touring Tribhangi Dance Theatre from Johannesburg with their mix of African, Indian, Contemporary and Afro-fusion dance styles. There is also a great range of music including The Roving Crows, Worcester Gilbert & Sullivan Society, and a tribute to Leonard Cohen.

Children are catered for too with January’s panto Mother Hubbard, then in February Soap Soup Theatre Company bring us their innovative slant to magic, nonsense and fun with The Owl and the Pussy Cat’s Treasury of Nonsense. There is film for children too with the Song of the Sea. Talking of films, this looks like being the best range of films that we have ever put on; and the live screenings aren’t bad either! Have a look!

A WILD WEST PANTOMIME ADVENTURE

A Wild West Pantomime AdventureOn the verge of being evicted from their home, Old Mother Hubbard, Hugh and Polly (her son and Daughter) and Dandy the Wonder Dog are granted a wish by the Good Fairy to find long lost Uncle Oswald. In a flash they are transported to the Wild West where they meet numerous reputable and disreputable characters. Add rip roaring songs and dances, and plenty of simply awful jokes, and we are left with a hugely entertaining show for all ages. OH YES WE ARE!

Roving Crows are an original must-see act, with roots in Folk and Celtic music. Renowned for their high-energy live performance, their shows pull together funked up traditional tunes and catchy original song. Think powerful Celtic undertones and intoxicating tribal rhythms. The band comprises fiddle, guitar, bass, percussion and vocals.

As well as almost constant national touring, the band has released 2 albums and 2 EPs since their launch in 2009. The most recent album ‘Deliberate Distractions’ received 4* reviews in the Financial Times and R2 Magazine amongst many more. Band of the Year - FATEA Music Awards 2014; Best Live Act – Spiral Earth Music Awards 2014; Best Folk Act - Exposure Music Awards 2012.

Alone in his Treasury, The CareTaker makes order of the chaos, battening down the hatches of fancy. A mischievous visitor is determined to remind him that he too could be an adventurer if only he were willing to set the fantastic free. But can the CareTaker let go of his rules and regulations and allow himself to sail away to the land of the Owl and the Pussycat?

Inspired by the works of Edward Lear, Soap Soup Theatre Company present another feast for the eyes, ears and imagination. With their delightfully unpredictable story telling style, hilarious characters and magical puppetry, they present a collection of nonsense and fun, bigger and better than ever before!

Suitable for age 3+

Told in a variety of styles, Blast from the Past present six of the best-loved tales including the dark and brooding Pardoner’s Tale, the bawdy Miller’s Tale, the proto-feminism of the Wife of Bath’s Tale and the simple whimsy of the Nun’s Priest’s Tale. Taking visual inspiration from medieval mystery plays and complete with a specially constructed touring set to resemble a medieval travelling theatre, the three-man cast use drama, verse, physical theatre and song to bring Chaucer's characters to riotous life, telling tales packed with colourful characters and strange situations. Definitely not a dry academic take on English literature – the show is fast, furious, occasionally filthy and invariably funny!

Unsuitable for under 12s (and serious scholars of the Late Middle Ages...!!)

Enigmatic and mysterious, songwriter Leonard Cohen has an exact sense of prose, a wry humour and courage to wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line. His recent spectacular world tour was successful beyond belief but did not, with regret, expose the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Keith James, with a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the pure song gives you a concert of this amazing material including Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne and Hallelujah, and Poems by Federico Garcia Lorca (said to be Cohen’s greatest influence) that Keith has set to music.

Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice - Sunday Times; an elegant and beautifully crafted reinterpretation of a great Artist’s words - BBC Radio Scotland

How far down do you own the land you stand on?

Bea and Joseph are re-kindling their love. But, with the arrival of a fracking company ready to dig, the village where they live is falling apart. Through the lives of a young couple, This Land tells a story of community, belonging, and the ground beneath our feet. What does the place where you live mean to you? What happens when someone else comes along and stakes their claim? Be taken on a theatrical journey through an ever-changing landscape with this new play.

Since 1978 the Cradley Singers have performed around three concerts a year of all the major choral repertoire under the baton of a number of conductors. This concert will feature many of the best known and well loved choral classics from Baroque, through to contemporary composers, as well as solo and instrumental items in the first half. After the interval the choir will sing the haunting Five Spirituals from Sir Michael Tippett's 'A Child of our Time' and conclude with Bob Chilcott's swingingly popular 'A Little Jazz Mass'.

"You must not laugh at me, darling, but it had always been a girlish dream of mine to love someone whose name was Ernest..." Everybody loves Ernest. The only trouble is, he doesn't exist. Or does he? Oscar Wilde's comic masterpiece gets The Pantaloons treatment in this anarchic take on the classic comedy of manners.

Wonderfully inventive... Catching this touring show will feel like putting on a forgotten pair of slippers and finding them even more comfy than you recall - Rotherham AdvertiserAbsolutely brilliant. The movement, the asides, the expressions – they drag every ounce of humour from the play and then add loads more of their own! You will love it. – paul@themarkettheatre

The emotive Deborah Rose heads a truly excellent variety of talent to support St Michael’s Hospice. Her timeless voice has been described by folk legend Judy Collins as one of the finest I’ve heard. Carlos Alonso (tenor) was trained at The Royal College of Music in London and Bath Spa University. He is a member of Opera Sulis and has sung with the Bath Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Bristol School’s Philharmonia. Ledbury resident Livia King is a postgraduate vocal student at the Birmingham Conservatoire. She has sung at various locations including St. Paul’s Cathedral, York Minster, and St. Mark’s, Venice and is a soloist with The Jenny Lind singers.

A promenade performance at The Master’s House

Master Cowper is expecting a very important visitor and the household, and not least George Hodnett the cook, must do all it can to prepare for such a grand occasion. The pheasants are plump and plucked, the mead is yeasty and warm and the gingerbread is perfectly peppered. Everything is as it should be. But when a young boy is banished from the house, things start to go wrong for poor old George. Come and visit The Master’s House as it has never been seen before, as (the characters from the screens in The Master’s House) George, Jim, Ann, Sybil, Robert, Master Cowper and more walk the halls once more in a promenade performance, written especially for LADS.

Hotbuckle return to Ledbury’s stage with Austen’s most perfect novel. Emma Woodhouse is handsome, clever and rich. She’s also a bit of a meddler. After her governess marries (with Emma’s help of course) it is clear that Miss Woodhouse must become a matchmaker. Who better to start with than unpolished Harriet Smith? With her help, who knows how far Miss Smith could reach?

But as her interfering gets out of hand, it may be time for Emma to question her judgement. Advised by friend Mr Knightley, can Emma untangle the web she’s spun? And what does she truly know of her own heart?

Following on from Persuasion – “pure theatre magic” ****The Stage and David Copperfield – “Superb … a master class in stage adaptation” BBC Radio, Hotbuckle return to the stage with Austen’s most perfect novel.

We are incredibly lucky, in associated with Sampad (the dynamic development agency for South Asian arts), to be bringing to Ledbury the amazing Tribhangi Dance Theatre, for an exhilarating dance experience called Sukuma (“Stand Up” in Swahili) that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Tribhangi is an award winning dynamic dance company based in Johannesburg, with striking, high-energy performances that reflect their colourful African, Contemporary, Afro-fusion and Bharatanatyam (South Indian) dance styles.

These are talking feet, talking drums, talking souls. Beautiful South African bodies steeped in different cultural heritages and rhythms - Adrienne Sichel: Dance Critic

By Amanda Whittington, this funny, heart warming, sequel to the enormously successful Ladies’ Day (performed by LADS in 2010), follows the lasses from Hull on their adventures Down Under.

After hitting the jackpot at Ladies' Day in York, the fish filleting foursome - Pearl, Jan, Shelley and Linda - are celebrating in style with the trip of a lifetime to Australia.

While Shelley dreams of luxury and glamour, the rest of the gang decide to go native and camp out under the stars at Uluru. But Shelley soon discovers there's more on offer than posh hotels, stunning beaches and sun-kissed surfers; and Pearl finds that she's got a mountain of her own to climb...

All is not well in Sherwood Forest. The Merry Men, recently renamed the Merry Persons by the politically correct Robin Hood, are not happy with their leader’s right-on ideology. Basically, they like “robbing from the rich”, but aren’t so keen on the “giving it to the poor” bit and there is treachery within the group.

Robin, a well-meaning socialist, and the Sheriff of Nottingham, a hard-hearted Conservative, are unhappy with their lot, and their women! The Sheriff’s maid persuades them to change places for a month, with disastrous consequences!

Using the familiar music from the well-known Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, with altered lyrics to tell the tale, you will once again be delighted by the musical abilities of the society's chorus and soloists.

22 years after its Edinburgh debut, Olivier Award winner Guy Masterson presents the highlights of his globally acclaimed solo tour-de-force Under Milk Wood - SEMI SKIMMED!

The 'Full Fat' unexpurgated version lasts two hours. This 60 minute version is an hilarious lyrical romp through Dylan Thomas’s fictional ‘Llareggub'! It may be slimmed down, but it's so rich and full that audiences would be hard pressed to know what is left out!

An astonishing performance that defies expectation, Masterson whisks the audience into a wonder-world of enchantment. Bawdy and beautiful, sad and sensual. The beauty of Thomas' wordplay and the mastery of Masterson's virtuosity will leave you breathless.

It's a feat of multiple characterisation impeccable timing, vocal dexterity and precise physical control, performed with tremendous sensitivity and panache! (The Guardian)

LA TRAVIATA by Giuseppe Verdi

Thursday 7.15pm £15 (over 60s & students £12.50) // Sung in Italian

La Traviata is regarded as one of Verdi’s finest operas, and Richard Eyre’s traditional staging, is one of The Royal Opera’s most popular productions. The opera tells the story of the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry, one of opera’s greatest heroines, based on the real life courtesan Marie Duplessis, who died in 1847 aged just 23. In this revival, Violetta is sung by Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva in her debut with The Royal Opera, following her successful appearance as Violetta at the Glyndebourne Festival.

Shakespeare’s glorious comedy of love and change comes to the National Theatre for the first time in over 30 years, with Rosalie Craig (London Road, Macbeth at MIF) as Rosalind.

With her father the Duke banished and in exile, Rosalind and her cousin Celia leave their lives in the court behind them and journey into the Forest of Arden.

There, released from convention, Rosalind experiences the liberating rush of transformation. Disguising herself as a boy, she embraces a different way of living and falls spectacularly in love.

The quintessential Romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and continues beyond the grave. Royal Ballet Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett has chosen Mary Shelley’s gothic classic Frankenstein as the basis for his first full-length narrative ballet for the Covent Garden Main Stage. A story of betrayal, curiosity, life, death and, above all, love, it inspires Scarlett to explore the very depths of human nature and our need to find acceptance and a place in the world.

Live Screening from The Royal Shakespeare Company

HAMLET

Wednesday 7pm £15 (over 60s & students £12.50)

Hamlet has the world at his feet. Young, wealthy and living a hedonistic life studying abroad. Then word reaches him that his father is dead.

Returning home he finds his world is utterly changed, his certainties smashed and his home a foreign land. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order he faces a stark choice. Submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality.

Simon Godwin (The Two Gentlemen of Verona 2014) directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Shakespeare’s searing tragedy. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world.

AMY SUFFRAGETTE

The artistic life and awful death of Amy Winehouse at age 27 has been so exhaustively chronicled that we think we know everything about her. Think again. What makes Asif Kapadia's documentary a devastating don’t-miss dazzler - like the lady herself - is the way he lays out her story without editorialising. Kapadia shows us the transformation of this mischief-loving Jewish girl from North London into a peerless interpreter of jazz and soul, ready to take her place with the greats. – Peter Travers: Rolling Stone

Full of wonderful performances, this urgently compelling drama shows the violent aspects of the suffrage movement and the raw hunger for equality behind it.

ADDICTED TO SHEEP

A terrific documentary exploring the lives of a family in the north Pennines trying to rear the perfect sheep (**** Mark Kermode, The Observer), which is winning accolades wherever it plays. It follows a couple dedicated to their flock of prized sheep, capturing both the stark, stunning landscape and the brutally hard graft it takes to survive; whilst their children, grow up close to the land, attending a school entirely comprised of farmers’ children, who are thoroughly immersed in their remote rural world.

Sun 7.30pm // 119mins // (18//Korea//2015//subtitles)

A female police chief moves to a rural station and finds herself at odds with a bigoted local community and undermined by her own officers. As she attempts to protect a neglected school girl from her father’s domestic abuse she exposes a complex web of blighted lives, alcoholism and neurosis. A gripping character study of a woman attempting to come to terms with her own demons through helping an innocent child. Moving, thrilling and thought-provoking in equal measure, and one of the buzz titles at Cannes this year.

3rd March 6th March

Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, and Robin Wright star in this nail-bitingly gripping film inspired by the incredible true story of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. In May 1996 a group of climbers started their ascent but were tragically unprepared for an intense blizzard, which enveloped them and resulted in terrifying catastrophe. Documented afterwards by journalist Jon Krakauer and the other climbers, the stories of tragedy and survival are brilliantly depicted by the superb ensemble cast in this taut, suspenseful and thrilling drama.

9th MarchColin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Ben Whishaw and numerous British comic actors depict a dystopian near future where single people, according to bizarre new rules, must go to a hotel and find within 45 days a romantic partner amongst the other 'guests' – or face an unusual transformation. Dark, absurdist humour and a study of a rigidly constructed, dysfunctional and alienating world that offers a provocative mirror to our own, this is a surreal, hilarious and brilliantly entertaining satire that recalls British comedies like Black Mirror and Brass Eye.

BROOKLYN

Written by Nick Hornby (Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time), this profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) follows a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brook-lyn. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between New York and her home.

A delightfully funny adaptation of Bill Bryson's international bestseller. Deciding to hike the notoriously tough Appalachian trail, Bryson (Robert Redford) invites old pal Katz (Nick Nolte), who turns up wheezing and overweight for a trip involving high altitudes, hardy terrain and... bears. Using their journey as a metaphor for the uncertainty of old age, with majestic footage of rural America, it's an hilarious, touching film with very enjoyable comic turns from Redford, Nick Nolte, and Emma Thompson (as Bryson’s wife).

SONG OF THE SEA

3rd JuneFri 10.30am //93mins // (PG//Ire/Lux/Belg/Fr/Den//2014)

An enchanting, breathtakingly gorgeous Oscar-nomi-nated animation. Based on the Irish legend of the Selkies, it tells the story of Saoirse, the last seal-child who, pursued by owl witch Macha and ancient mythical creatures, goes on an epic journey with her brother Ben to save the world of magic and discover the secrets of their past. A wonder of magical storytell-ing and visual splendour, and destined to become a classic. Rated PG only for some “mild peril and language”.

FORCE MAJEURE

A Swedish family travels to the French Alps to enjoy a few days of skiing but, during a lunch at a mountain-side restaurant, an avalanche turns everything upside down. With diners fleeing in all directions, mother Ebba calls for her husband Tomas as she tries to protect their children. Tomas, meanwhile, is running for his life. The anticipated disaster fails to occur, leaving a question mark hanging over their father in particular. Tomas and Ebba's marriage now hangs in the balance.

She struggles to cope with her fate as a single mum and Samuel's constant fear of monsters, and violent reaction to overcome the fear, doesn't help her cause either. When things cannot get any worse, they read a strange book in their house about the 'Babadook' monster that hides in the dark areas of their house. Then her nightmare really begins!
