We are looking ahead looking ahead to Spring 2015! This spring marks our 18th year at the Fairfield Blvd location WOW! We have many great program opportunities awaiting you and all members of your family! Some exciting new bus tours lie ahead for you as well as our fitness center rooms packed with a program schedule to keep you on track with your fitness routine! If you’re just getting started or are a seasoned fitness participant call our main office and ask for Kelli Montgomery our Health Fitness Supervisor to discuss you needs and interests.

Speaking of Kelli we at the Recreation Department would like to Spotlight a major achievement in her fitness career and are proud to announce that in October 2014 Kelli competed in the Xterra World Championships in Maui, Hawaii and finished FIRST out of 28 competitors in the Female 40-44yr group to win the World Championship. The event includes a 1mile rough water swim, 20 mile mountain bike ride and a 6 mile trail run like a rollercoaster ride through pineapple fields and forests. Congrats Kelli on your World Championship!

The Recreation Department and its Parks & Recreation Commission are working continually to bring to you this year some exciting park improvements. Each of the pavilions over the last two years have been receiving new and improved picnic tables as we cycle out older wooden tables and reuse at other locations.1. Kendrick Park Project including Meghan’s Walk phase one is almost complete with the installation of the basketball court this spring as the final piece and then on to planning and fundraising for phase two which includes a multi play structure for ages 5 to 12.2. Vietnam Vets Parking Operational and Safety Enhancement Project is about 80% complete with the paving of areas left to finish this spring. This project will provide an increase of upper parking lot +35 cars, a pedestrian walk way, wider culvert and traffic turn around at the southern end of the parking lot.3. The Dog Park off of Quinnipiac St. has been cleared and as of this writing the fencing will be installed shortly leaving only the paving/striping of the parking area and signage as the final items to get this park operational my guess would be late spring. Thanks to DPW and the WDLA for their continued support and efforts in making this project real.4. The Legacy Gardens at Wallace Park work is all complete with the planting of the garden to be done by the Wallingford Garden Club (THANK YOU) this spring. The Recreation Commission is now finalizing the application process for civic organizations that would like to gain approval to be admitted to be a part of the Legacy Garden at Wallace Park.5. Doolittle Park hard ball field backstop is being replaced with a new installed backstop as of this writing. In addition this spring, for the families utilizing the playground you will see the new 25’x25’ shade structure installed. Finally, the Wharton Brook Riparian Buffer was cleared out and weeded this past December and a plan for maintenance is in discussion.6. Harrison Park little league field backstop is getting a new backstop installed this January.7. Pragemann Park will be receiving an expanded parking lot for 41 cars in January and February as weather permits.8. West Side Eagles Memorial Park Baseball/Football Field is slated for a total makeover starting this August. The project includes new/improved drainage, irrigation, sod and some fencing. The park will be closed for baseball and football for almost up to a year. I appreciate the efforts made of all of the youth leagues making accommodations for the leagues temporarily without fields. We look forward to another fun-filled season of activities and continuing to provide you with the best recreational opportunities designed to enrich the lives of you and your family! If you have suggestions, or there are programs you would like to see added, please let us know!Thank you for your continued patronage! All the best ~ John Gawlak

Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and on average, punish the specialist. The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs. The need of Olympic athletes and out grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our soldiers, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen. – Courtesy of CrossFit Inc.

Check For information online at www.WallIingfordLandTrust.org. The Land Trust’s newest trail located on Three Meadows Property: A Short, flat nature hike on Bridle Lane, off Woodhouse Ave. This trail is meant for those looking for a brief, less arduous nature experience and is especially rewarding for the bird enthusiast. The parcel backs up to quiet neighbors and contains several varied habitats; meadows, wetlands with a stream running through the central corridor, a cedar stand, some scrub growth and early successional forest, all of which provide cover, shelter and food to a wide range of amphibians, mammals, butterflies and birds. A large sugar maple provides a shady picnic area, complete with two benches for those who want to sit and enjoy this serene area. Orchard Glenn/Spruce Glen: This hike starts with a short descent to a picturesque stream crossing. Use Route 68 and turn north on to Barnes Park Road

North to get to the trailhead. At the end, park at the Large “Wallingford Land Trust” sign. Please pack out what you bring in. No motorized vehicles are allowed. Go to www.wallingfordlandtrust.org for a trail map and be sure to look at the map in the kiosk at the beginning of the trail.

WEST DAYTON HILL/FOX RUN DRIVE: Our newest trails are Martin’s Trail and Ridge Loop Trail. Created by Eagle Scout candidate Chris Martin, this 1.6 mile loop trail has it all! As always the Wallingford Land Trust Trails are well blazed. To get to the trail, take Pond Hill Road to West Dayton Hill Road. Turn onto Fox Run Drive and park at the wooden post marking the Wallingford Land Trust’s property on the south side of Fox Run Drive. Our children live in a hurry up world of busy parents, school pressures, incessant lessons, video games, malls, and competitive sports. WE usually don’t think of these influences as stress for our kids, but often they are. The bustling pace of our children’s lives can have a profound effect on their innate joy and usually not for the better. Yoga can help counter these pressures. Yoga at an early age encourages self esteem and body awareness with physical activity that’s non competitive. Fostering cooperation and compassion instead of opposition is a great gift to give children. Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. This program will help preschool teachers and parents bring that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface. For more information check www.yogajournal.com. Bring along your yoga mat for fun!

9000.204 USING MUSIC IN THE PRE-K CLASSROOMDate: Thursday, April 30, 2015Presenter: Michele Urban, Director, MY MUSIC ROOMLocation: Community Room, Wallingford Public Library, 200 No. Main StreetTime: Program begins at 6:15 pm preceded by a light meal at 5:30 pmfor those who register.Certificates of attendance will be provided for those requiring them. The Music & Movement workshop invites preschool teachers to learn how they can incorporate musical experiences into their early childhood classrooms. Learn how to create musical experiences that promote the development of a child’s competence in tonality and rhythm, while supporting cognitive, language, emotional, social and physical development. Through interactive songs, games and discussion, teachers will gain a better understanding of what they can do to help young children learn musically. Teachers come away with ideas for musical activities, movements and songs which can be immediately used in the classrooms. RAISING READER CLUBSContact us at 203-284-4019 in the Family Resource Center for more information. Each Raising Reader Club runs approximately 60 minutes and most of them offer child care at the site. This early literacy program is available in Spanish as Lee y Seras. One of the

sessions features a trip to the Wallingford Public Library for a tour – it’s amazing! This program is free thanks to the support from the Liberty Bank Foundation.

PLAYGROUPS FOR CHILDREN BIRTH TO 5 YRS OF AGE.Every child deserves to play but how and where do they learn to play? From the very first meeting in the hospital with their parents they are ready to listen and learn. Sounds and sights set things in motion for this great experience. Parents are the first teachers so get ready to have fun with your little one. When you want to expand the experience, Wallingford’s WE CARE offers free playgroups in English and Spanish called The Playful Cruisers and Bebes Activos. Come meet other families and young children and play together!

THE PLAYFUL CRUISERSThe Playful Cruisers meet in the mornings (9:30-11:00 am) at the Family Resource Center, 6 Fairfield Blvd. or the Wallingford Community Day Care Center; 80 Wharton Brook Drive and Moses Y Beach Elementary School.
