CYDNEY BRADFORD – A MUSICAL MOTHER’S DAY MEMORY
Photography provided.
Some of Cydney Bradford’s most cherished memories as a child are centered around her family’s love of music. “My mother, grandmother, and aunt were in a band,” she recalls. “and I grew up sitting on the piano bench next to my grandmother, watching her play.”
Bradford, who is Circulation Desk Supervisor at the Spring Hill Public Library, grew up in northern California. The women in her family provided endless hours of entertainment inside the home through their music, as well as for local crowds throughout the community on weekends. But what ended up becoming a popular band would have remained a duo if it not for her mother.
Pictured are Cydney Bradford’s grandmother, Blanche Martin on the left sitting at the piano; her mother in the middle with the harmonica, Louise Stockman; and her aunt, Frankie Johnson in the white and black polka dots holding the guitar.

“My grandmother and aunt always played music, and we’d have jam sessions where Grandmother would play the piano, and my aunt would play her guitar. But one day, my mother said she wished she could join in and do something. My aunt said, ‘Why don’t you play the harmonica?’ My mother said, ‘Why not?’ She went out and bought her first harmonica and taught herself to play.” Louise Stockman became very proficient on an instrument few women could play during the 1950s. “It got to the point where she was playing multiple sizes of her harmonicas, and they were always Hohners (brand). It was always fun at the dances and performances they played to see how people would stare at this rather lovely, classy-looking lady playing the harmonica.” Bradford’s mother, grandmother, and aunt, joined by a male drummer and male saxophone player, became the Mel-O-Tones. The ladies dressed in silk dresses, while the men wore black pants and cowboy shirts, and they performed for a lot of people during the late 50s and early 60s. “They would play at the Grange Hall or the Russian River Rid-ers (a horse club), and people would come from all over because they played such good music. And everyone loved to dance! It was a primary form of entertainment where we were, north of San Francisco along the Russian River.” The music ranged from songs like “On Top of Old Smokey” to “Autumn Leaves” to “Beer Barrel Polka” (also known as “Roll Out the Barrel”). “Wonderful old songs, mostly things you could dance to,” Bradford says.” Even as the Mel-O-Tones became more popular, music remained a constant at home. Her mother was always playing something on the stereo or would even stop to play a song on the harmonica if asked. “My father was very artistic and loved that my mother played the harmonica. We’d just be sitting in the living room, and he might say, ‘Louise, play us a tune,’ she says with a laugh. While Bradford never played in a band, she did learn to play the piano (mostly from watching her grandmother), the organ, and the harmonica. Like her mother before her, it often comes as a surprise when people discover she can play one. Her daughter, too, has the musical touch and can both play the piano and sing. Bradford says she remains eternally grateful for the many gifts music has given her. “I grew up with a mother who loved music, from a family that was all musical. And to this day, I can hear certain songs, and it’s like I can smell my mom. I can cry a little bit about it because I miss her that much. Music was everywhere. It was something that was truly part of our lives.”

THE LANTERN AT MORNING POINTE
In 2017 Morning Pointe Senior Living opened a freestand-ing assisted living community at 1001 McCutcheon Creek Lane in Spring Hill. Last year Morning Pointe added an adjacent 33,000-square-foot memory care community, one which is specifi-cally designed to meet the needs of senior residents with Alzhei-mer’s disease and related conditions. “The Lantern, our Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence, serves residents of all stages of memory care from early onset of demen-tia to the more advanced stages of Alzheimer’s,” explains Will Brewer, Vice President of Corporate Communications for Indepen-
dent Healthcare Properties & Morning Pointe. As such, the two communities complement each other, much like they do at many of the other properties that Morning Pointe operates in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and Indiana. That is, residents move into the assisted living part of the community, “but as their needs change they might need memory care and then it’s an easy transition from assisted living to our memory care building,” says Brewer. He notes that Morning Pointe has a similar pair of communities in Franklin, as well as facilities in Brentwood and Columbia.

But whether residents live in one of the 70-plus apartments in the assisted living community at Spring Hill or one of the 44 apart-ments in the memory care center, everyone enjoys premier ameni-ties and farm-fresh produce and food, not to mention physical and occupational therapy and wellness programming. “We have a lot of engaging programs, and there is a lot of life enrichment going on in the two buildings,” adds Brewer. For The Lantern residents, that includes Morning Pointe’s trademarked Meaningful Day program, which focuses on each individual’s interests and life experiences, and allows for “person-alized” programming, as opposed to a “one size fits all” approach.
Morning Pointe also utilizes the approach favored by leading dementia expert Teepa Snow, who created the Positive Approach to Care model of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregiving. “We also use the Best Friends™ approach, a program that approaches memory care from the standpoint of ‘You really want to become best friends with the residents, and once you become a trusted friend they start feeling comfortable, and you get a better response from them,” explains Brewer. At the same time, Morning Pointe also provides ample support for family members of people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

For one, The Lantern (Spring Hill) hosts a monthly virtual sup-port group for caregivers of people with dementia and Alzheimer’s that features nationally recognized geriatric neuropathologist Dr. David Hutchings, as a regular guest. Dr. Hutchings helps families cope with the challenges they face in caring for a loved one with memory impairment, and being part of a virtual support group helps remind everyone that others are experiencing many of the same challenges and frustrations. Yet one of the biggest differentiators between Morning Pointe and its competitors are the nurses and staffers, says Brewer. “Peo-
ple help you do a lot of things, and when you have the right people in the right buildings, good things happen.”
