Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget the Carpets , Rugs and Upholstery Spring is quickly approaching and with it comes an age old tradition known as spring cleaning. After being closed up for the winter a home is often full of dust, dirt, and other airborne particles and allergens. These particles can lead to mold and bacteria growth that can have adverse health effects for residents. Carpets, rugs and furniture will often capture and hold these particles and as winter ends; they can become saturated with these particles that need to be removed in order to maintain the air quality within the home. Carpets While vacuuming is good for removing large debris from carpets, vacuums - even those advertising HEPA filters - are often ineffective at removing fine particles embedded deep in the carpet fibers. In order to remove these particles, carpets should be cleaned using hot water extraction (also known as steam cleaning) by a quality professional carpet cleaning service. The hot water extraction process involves the application of very hot pressurized water and cleaning solution mixture onto the carpet. The solution soaks into the carpet fibers dislodging any debris into the water mixture. This is then extracted out of the carpet. This process not only removes dirt, stains and particles, it sanitizes the carpet as well. It is also safe for most carpets, people, and pets because harsh chemicals are not used and the extraction process greatly reduces drying time, which ultimately helps prevent mold and mildew. Rugs Another area where harmful particles can accumulate over the winter is area rugs. While many people choose hardwood floors these days, they often use area rugs to protect them from damage. Just like carpets, these area rugs need to be professionally cleaned each spring to remove the particles that have collected over the winter. Most professional carpet cleaners provide special services specifically for area rugs since they require more care than carpets. Typically, this includes using a special machine designed to shake out as much debris as possible. Then the rug is cleaned and sanitized using the hot water extraction process. Once cleaned, area rugs are hung so both sides can dry evenly which helps prevent damage to the rug. Upholstery Along with carpets and area rugs, upholstery is another area dust and other harmful particles can settle. Because of the frequency people are exposed to upholstery, it poses the biggest health threat. In addition, oils and germs from people’s skin along with other debris can be harmful to furniture materials causing them to wear more quickly. Most professional carpet cleaning services provide services for furniture and upholstery as well. Just as with carpets and rugs, the hot water extraction process can be used to safely and effectively deep clean furniture and upholstery surfaces. This spring, when you open up your home and begin your spring clean, don’t forget your carpets, rugs and upholstery. Hiring a professional carpet cleaner to deep clean these materials using the hot water extraction process is more than another expense. It is an investment in your family’s health.
