and water instructors to make children with an Autism diagnosis comfortable and safe in water. An important mitzvah (commandment for good deeds) in Judaism is to teach our children to swim. Another is to remove stumbling blocks from the path of the blind. These programs mirror these commandments by helping especially vulnerable children to be safe in the water, mitigating a leading cause of death for children with Autism. We welcome this community.

Camp Centerland will grow this spring as ground is broken for the new Gretchen S. Gross Omanut Center. A major gift in honor of our President’s special birthday has enabled the construction of what will be a state-of-the-art arts and crafts center that is expected to be finished in time for camp. The building will sit at the left or north side of the circle on the near peninsula. A new structure for lunch will be erected in a wooded area, not far from the new building. New, real bathrooms will be available close-by at the new shelter which was completed last fall and at the new arts and crafts building. First-class, environmentally friendly, composting bathrooms will also be available on the south peninsula, near the climbing wall and zip-lines. Other construction is expected and announcements will be made shortly detailing our expectations.

Additional naming opportunities are available at camp. Please contact me or Peter Fleischmann at the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies for further information.

Our “All-for-One” annual fundraising campaign is in full swing. In its’ third year, this important campaign helps us fund programs that we ordinarily couldn’t afford. All JCCs depend on contributions as one of the four legs of support for the agency. Funding from traditional sources continues to be a smaller and smaller percentage of our overall budget. The need for assistance for elderly members, single-parent families and others continues to grow. Equipment that is five years old needs to be replaced. Responsibility for these needs is shared by all of our members and all of our communities. Your contributions will be appreciated by all of our members and will be spent judiciously. Thank you in advance for your help.

Happy Spring,

Richard Zakalik

There are many things that will happen this spring that will be a cause for celebration at your JCC. First, we will be marking the fifth anniversary of what many believe to be the turnaround of the JCC. Five years ago a plan was launched and construction began at the Benderson Family Building following more than a million dollars of work at the Holland Family Building. Intense planning with architects, bankers, philanthropists and your Board of Trusteesled to a successful transformation that has been recognized and emulated in other communities. And during these five years we have consistently grown and prospered as more communities have become a part of our “center of communities”.

At the Holland Family Building, our third season of “Au-some Swimmers” will be hitting the waves. The Benderson Family Building Aquatics Department will also be hosting children and their families who will work with our trained and talented lifeguards

Come join us as we celebrate Israel’s Birthday and transform the JCC into a “Little Bit of Israel”. Israel 67 promises to be a fun-filled family day of activities, programs and events. Israel 67 is a collaborative program of the JCC, Jewish Federation, BJE and The Weinberg Campus and is made possible by the generous support of the Jewish Federation.

Camp Centerland’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that teaching and demonstrating the Jewish values of chesed (kindness), shalom bayit (cooperation)

and tikkun olam (repairing the world) is as important as splashing in the swimming pool, enjoying a popsicle or singing camp songs.

Aquatics Personal Training BenefitsofPrivateswimlessons Personal training is for everyone! Children can start as early as 6 months old.

We offer private and semi-private lessons to meet your specific needs. A private swim lesson is one on one instruction.

Private swim lessons are the most efficient way to learn how to swim. It’s also the least expensive in the long run because skills can be tailored to the individuals’ needs. Learning how to swim properly and smoothly is the route to one of the healthiest forms of exercise and important life skill.

Private lessons are offered 7 days per week. A semi-private lesson is two adults or children per instructor. You can practice swimming at a time and day convenient for you. You can request a specific instructor. If your first instructor is not a perfect match, inform the Aquatics Director. He/she will find a more suitable instructor. Private lessons are perfect for individuals with special needs, in post rehab, or who are fearful of the water.

“Wet-Tastic” Wednesdays Designed for families who are dedicated to making sure their child is swimming safely and independently at a young age. This class will be full of fun wet, water games and lots of practice learning to swim independently. Taught by certified Red Cross WSI instructors. Participants in the JCC’s Early Childhood program can be picked up and dropped off right from your child’s class room!

HUMOR

By Neil Simon

April 23-may 17

This classic comedy opens as a group of men assemble for a card game in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. If the mess in Oscar’s home is any indication, it’s no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger who has just separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed and tense, Felix seems almost suicidal. As the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean-freak and the slob decide to room together with hilarious results.

Directed by Saul Elkin

Starring:

Ray Boucher, Tom Loughlin,

Lisa Ludwig, David Marciniak,

Passover Passover commemorates the Exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago. The ritual observance of this holiday centers around a special service conducted at home called the Seder (meaning “order”) which includes a festive meal. At the Seder, a book called the Hagaddah containing the order of prayers, rituals, readings and songs for the Pesach Seder is read. The holiday continues for 8 days when no leavened foods shall be eaten.

yom HaShoahYom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day. Shoah, which means “catastrophe” or “utter destruction” in Hebrew, refers to the atrocities that were committed against the Jewish people during World War II. This is a memorial day for those who died in the Shoah. Join us on April 19 at 10:30am at Congregation Shir Shalom for a community observance.

yom Ha'atzma-ut Israeli Independence Day, marks the establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948. In Israel it’s a huge celebration, Many cities hold outdoor performances in cities’ squares featuring leading Israeli singers and fireworks displays. Streets around the squares are closed to cars, allowing people to sing and dance in the streets. See page 23 for events planned.

Shavuot The Torah was given by G-d to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai more than 3300 years ago. On Shavuot, we renew our acceptance of the Torah. The word Shavuot means “weeks.” It marks the completion of the 7 week period between Passover and Shavuot. It is customary to eat dairy foods and stay up all night learning Torah on the first night.
