Introduction to Graphic Design – NEW! In this introductory graphic design class, you’ll learn the answers to this question: “What is graphic design?” You’ll learn the basics of three Adobe CC programs (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator), elements of art and principles of design, color theory, typography and how graphic design communicates in a visual world. This class will be the first in a series of graphic design classes, coming this summer!

DSLR Camera Basics: Level 2 This class will advance your ability to use DSLR features and knowledge of the basics of photography. Picking up where Level 1 leaves off, this class will cover lens perspective and distortion. Light writing, balanced exposures, photographing water drops, panning, close up photography, and much more. DSLR Camera Basics: Level 1 Second in a series of six levels of photography classes that build upon themselves to ultimately give you full control of your DSLR cameras. Our cameras will be in full manual mode the entire time as we cover the topics of complete control and understanding of aperture, shutter and ISO. We will look at how they all work together to achieve equivalent value exposure, histogram, custom white balance and much more. WRITINGPoetry Writing – NEW! In this new poetry class, you will learn about the fundamentals of poetry and work together and individually in creating different types of poetry. You will share and work toward improving your abilities as a poet through editing, revision and practice. In-class writing assignments will be provided and you will be encouraged to participate in lively poetry discussions. Each week, you will bring one copy of your latest – or most impressive – poem for a class critique.

Drawing for the Terrified - No class 4/24 “I can’t even draw a stick figure.” Absolutely no experience allowed! This class is for anyone who’s ever said “I can’t draw!” but wished it were otherwise. This class will introduce you to basic methods of drawing and observational skills. You will learn at your own pace within a structured course and judgement-free environment. Drawing with Oil Pastels Oil pastels are one of the most inexpensive drawing media. They are opaque and easy to handle. Thinned with turpentine they become translucent and pasty. You will learn to draw with this largely underestimated medium. Some drawing experience required. Ages 16+

Drawing in Pen & Ink This course covers the use of lines, stippling (dots) and the use of solid blacks. You will have the opportunity to take a literal drawing and transform it into an illustration to emphasize highlighting, shadow, shape, etc. Time will be set aside to examine illustrations in fine and commercial art and take a look at the role pen and ink has played in publishing as employed by past and present masters.

Printmaking In this beginner’s class, students will carve relief images into small pieces of linoleum and print them by hand. The images will be printed with black printing ink on paper. The carving tools are conventional linoleum carving tools. Ages 15+

Pen, Brush and Ink with Watercolor and Soft Pastel Explore the possibilities of using pen and ink in conjunction with watercolor and soft pastels. This is a traditional mixed media approach. You will be presented with examples of works by different artists of the Western and Eastern tradition as well as a demonstration of the media at the beginning of each class period. By the end of the course, you will have a firm understanding of this method of drawing.

GLASSGlass Blowing Learn the basics of this unique art and produce forms in hot glass. Demonstrations and instructions will be given for more complex forms. SILVERSMITHINGSilversmithing - No class 5/27 (Saturday) CityArts’ versatile metalsmithing studio offers experiences in jewelry fabrication (sawing, soldering and stone setting), lost wax casting (centrifugal), forging, forming, enameling and lapidary on a limited basis. If you have ever wanted to create jewelry for yourself or someone else, this is the class to take. Experience the history and artistic culture of New York City, Chicago, New Orleans, Santa Fe and Los Angeles. Skyscraping sculptures, delicious paintings, jazzy necklace, shadow boxes, zingy zentangle drawings and star-studded mixed media creations are just a few of the projects campers will make. Welcome to America’s Windy City! Campers will create pizza slice soft sculptures, hot dog stand paintings and collages, Navy Pier mixed media sculptures and Beantown copper and silver bracelets. Ages 6+ / $40

CityArts invites you to discover your creativity this spring.

“Discover Your Creativity” Workshops is an exploratory afternoon that lets you sample an art class of your choice. This entry-level, hands-on experience gives you basic information about the class of your choice.

Choose from silversmithing, pottery, glass blowing, glass fusing, photography, painting, drawing, fiber, digital arts and expressive arts.

All classes on March 12 are free and require advance enrollment.
