Welcome to BOSS

It’s easy to see why kids and teens would want to spend their summer at Buckswood Overseas Summer School (BOSS). It’s an experience of a lifetime that offers more than meets the eye! Of course our English lessons are extremely important but so too is the thrill of trying new activities and visiting new places, and the friendships that are made make it such a special experience for our students.

Here at BOSS, we take pride in helping to shape the lives of our students and, by encouraging confidence through experience, we allow them to challenge themselves through excitement and adventure as well as developing social and life skills in a happy and pleasant environment.

However, BOSS is not only about experiencing new things and shaping lives, it is also about having lots of fun and being able to take your stories home to share with your friends and family. Our campus is an amazing place, full of life, activities and energy!

Our Courses

Spring Course: 28th March to 17th April 2021

Summer School: 27th June to 14th August 2021

BOSS courses, for students aged 8 to 17, are designed to get the most out of our students both socially and academically. With 20 hours of English per week, our academic programme will push you to work hard at improving your English in the mornings while our fabulous Activity and Excursion Programme will offer you the opportunity to play hard in the afternoons and evenings!

All in all, BOSS courses offer you the chance to get the most out of your time with us and to develop as a person. Not only will you have lots of fun, improve your English, see wonderful places and make lots of great new friends, you will really broaden your mind, grow in confidence and learn to become independent.

What English levels do we offer? We offer

upper-intermediate (B2) to advanced (C1) and

finally proficient (C2).

BOSS adopts a learner centred approach and the content of our Academic Programme is carefully prepared by our energetic and committed Academic Team on the basis of each students’ individual assessment and needs. All of our classrooms are equipped with smart boards and with a maximum class size of 16 and levels ranging from beginner to advanced, our course is planned so that a sensible balance between academic and non-academic activities is maintained. We like to educate our students, but also to keep them motivated and never bored.

The objective of our Academic Programme is to strengthen and improve our students’ English by consolidating what knowledge they may already have of the language. The outcome will then be the opportunity to take an internationally recognised ESOL exam, which all students will take on the last day of their stay at BOSS (minimum stay 2 weeks).

Internationally recognised ESOL exams are well suited to summer schools as they give direction to short courses and provide an outcome to the course. Everyone can be successful at their own level and all students who pass will go home with an internationally recognised certificate and a feeling of accomplishment as well as making your teacher and parents happy!

Key Facts

Maximum class size: 16

Average class size: 12

Hours of English per week: 20

Exams included: All students will take our

placement test, a one hour test covering

reading, writing, listening and speaking on

their first day and an internationally recognised

ESOL exam on their last day.

Our ‘A Slice of Britain’ lessons allow our students to develop knowledge of British culture, traditions and customs as well as improving their language skills. We encourage discussion and participation in these interactive lessons and use practical means wherever possible, for example, cooking and eating British food, making their very own British-style movie and by participating in British customs during their lessons. Therefore, our students will not only improve their English whilst learning about Britain, they will also experience and participate in British customs and traditions first-hand!

As well as our ‘A Slice of Britain’ lessons, our students will also participate in our enlightening project classes. Project classes last for the duration of a week that ends with all students presenting what they have learnt and sharing their newfound knowledge with all other students and staff. The informative lessons allow our students to use independent learner strategies as under the guidance of their teachers, they must use their imaginations to research, produce and present their work in these creative lessons.

Key Facts

Projects include: English speaking counties during which

students must research and present information about countries

that use the English language, ‘Dragons Den’ during which

students must create and pitch their own business ideas, theatre

week during which students must write, produce and perform

their own pieces of theatre plus many more.

Key Facts

Should social distancing measures still

exist in 2021, we have a socially distant

programme ready to go. Please contact

us for more details. Not a moment passes at BOSS when our students aren’t engaged in some form of class, activity or excursion. We have put a lot of thought into our timetable to ensure that our days are structured to allow optimum time for not only learning but also playing, being creative, socialising, recharging, resting, relaxation and connecting with nature.

Being nestled in the Sussex meadows provides many benefits to our students - they breathe fresh air every day; it is safe and they are focused on the here and now.

BOSS Academies

At BOSS we like to offer our students as many activities as possible and as well as the fantastic onsite

activity programme that we offer when we don’t have excursions, we also offer six professional

academies, all onsite (apart from golf).

We of course offer football, tennis and do a lot of dancing during our onsite activity programme, but

the difference between those activities and our academies is that our academies are run by coaches

who are qualified in their sport or subject.

BOSS Academies are not only for those students who participate in their sport regularly and must

maintain practise so as to maintain their level and develop, but also for students who simply want to

experience something new.

Please note that BOSS Academies will take place during our onsite activity programme and include

equipment but not kit.

to squeeze in an extra few hours in order to prepare for

an exam or simply to improve and grow in confidence.

Whatever your reason may be, our teachers are standing by

to teach you even more English!

any student who signs up to an academy learns something

new, learns new techniques and learns more about

themselves and their chosen discipline whilst of course

improving.

We see our academies as an opportunity to experience

something new - to ride a horse in a different part of the

world, in a different environment; to play golf on a stunning

course in an area of outstanding natural beauty or to play

football with other players from all over the world.

Please note that our academies are add-ons and will run

alongside our usual activity programme.

Although BOSS is one big family, your house will be your closest family. Your housemates are the people you live with, your team, your brotherhood or sisterhood. We have six houses at BOSS and they are called Kipling, Milne, School House, Rowling, Oaks and Wells. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding students.

While you are at BOSS, your triumphs will earn you house points, while any rule breaking will lose house points. At the end of the week, the house with the most points is awarded with the oh so precious pizza and the right to eat first in the Dining Room for the following week, a great honour. We hope that you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours.

Our House System provides you with a “home-from-home” environment that will help you to learn and grow as individuals and as leaders. Without realising it, everything that you do is a valuable life lesson that will help you to learn and develop under the close mentorship of our House Tutors.

House Tutors will welcome you into your house and provide you with all the care that you need during your

stay. We have a team of up to 30 staff members who all live onsite to provide you with care and attention

but your House Tutors will be your first point of contact and the person you should turn to for advice or

assistance.

The comradeship and sense of belonging that grows within our House System will naturally encourage you to

work together with your housemates, to do your best and to succeed with pride in all that you do.

Key Facts

Accommodation: We have three houses for boys and three houses for girls. All houses are onsite and arranged according

to the following age groups – 8 to 11, 12 to 14 and 15 to 17. Please note that we do not have en suite accommodation for

students aged 8 to 11 however all bathrooms are within a 5 second walk from bedrooms.

Rooms: We offer rooms with two, three or four beds and some singles. All rooms have beds, a desk, a chair, a wardrobe

and drawers.

Room requests: We strongly recommend that all students share a room with someone of the same age who cannot speak

the same language. Any specific room requests will incur an extra charge of £125 per week.

Our TeamA lot of time and effort goes into selecting and recruiting the best people to

work at BOSS. All staff go through a three day training camp that includes

all aspects of working in a school environment as well as working with

children. All of our teachers are very well qualified and experienced, as

are our House Tutors and of course our Management Team. In 2019, 85% of

our team were returning to BOSS for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or even 6th time

and with over 100 years of experience between us, we have experienced

just about everything in a summer school setting and are therefore very

capable of dealing with any eventuality and can guarantee that your kids

are safe with us.

EnvironmentThe BOSS campus is an eco-friendly campus where each student is

encouraged to learn and to understand the importance of the environment

in which they live. We have biomass boilers and solar panels around the

campus which allow us to reduce our carbon footprint and means that

much of Buckswood’s energy comes from the summer sun!

FoodOur chefs cook at Buckswood all year round, serving our meals in our

family style dining room.

Our chefs are always around and can cater for any dietary requirements.

They are part of the ‘Buckswood Family’ so you can talk to them any time

about food, arranging a dinner party or even just to practise your English!

Health and SafetyOur nurse is on call throughout the week in our very own onsite surgery

to arrange any necessary health care for students who may not be feeling

100%.

To add an extra safety blanket, each member of BOSS staff is First Aid and

Child Protection trained and the local hospital is just ten minutes away.

Page 13: Spring and Summer programmes for 8 to 17 year olds...Courses Spring Course: 29th March to 18th April 2020 Summer School: 28th June to 15th August 2020 BOSS courses, for students aged

Over the years we have seen some incredible things at BOSS. Things that have warmed our hearts, things that have

brought a tear to many an eye, things that have made us feel proud and things that have made us realise how lucky we

are to be a part of this multi-cultural, international community. We have had students who have arrived and left a few

weeks later a completely different person, having gone through a transformation from nervous to fearless, from rebellion

to revolution, from shy to social and from unsure to sure. Perceptions are changed, personal discoveries are made. That

feeling on the last day of, ‘I have done it!’ followed by tears when the sudden realisation hits that it is time to go home.

We remind our students at this point not to cry because it is over, but to smile because it has happened. And while their

summer school experience is happening, our students will have experienced 10 things that will culminate in this burst of

emotion when the time to leave finally arrives.

1. They will have grown in confidence

BOSS naturally breeds confidence. We have seen very shy

students arrive who two weeks later are standing alone on a

stage dancing in front of 250 people!

2. They will have learnt the value of teamwork

Our house system encourages all students to work together

with their housemates to be the best, learning that there is no

‘I’ in team, but there is in win!

3. They will have become more aware

Often we see students walk past other people without

acknowledging they’re there. We therefore encourage our

students to be aware of everyone around them.

4. They will have improved their social skills

BOSS gives our students the social skills and confidence to

approach someone that they would like to talk to and to hold

their own in a conversation.

5. They will have spent most of their time in nature

BOSS is like a little island in a huge sea of green. We are

completely surrounded by nature and benefits of being in

nature are endless.

6. They will have become more independent

At BOSS, we encourage our students to be responsible for

themselves in certain aspects of their lives such as waking up

on time and tidying their bedrooms!

7. They will have become more open minded

We encourage our students to give everything and everyone

a chance and over time, we see students let down their guard

and lose their inhibitions.

8. They will have learnt the value of internationalism

In a world where the media tells us that we’re all different

because of lines on a map, we want our students to realise

that we are all the same.

9. They will improve their English language skills

According to research, speaking a second language can mean

that you have a better attention span and can multi-task better

than monolinguals.

10. They will have benefitted from physical activity

Our timetable is packed with physical activity and research

shows that physical activity can boost self-esteem, mood,

sleep quality and energy.

Correct Information and Administration Charges

It is the responsibility of the parent, guardian or agency to inform us of any mistakes in the spelling of names during the registration

Once confirmation documents have been received, you have 48 hours to check them and inform us of any mistakes or issues with the

Buckswood Overseas Summer School is not responsible for any incurred charges when making a payment via bank transfer, credit card

or any other means. All costs and/or charges must be covered by the payee to ensure that we receive the full amount payable.

Refund Policy

All refunds will be sent to the account of the Buckswood Overseas Summer School representative to whom the fees were originally paid

or to the individual from whom Buckswood Overseas Summer School has received the original payment. If a student’s visa application is

rejected after payment has been received all fees, excluding any cancellation fees detailed in the Cancellation Policy below, will be

refunded within 28 days, provided we receive a visa refusal letter at least two working days before the course is due to start and the

student has fulfilled all requirements for a visa application. No refund will be made if a visa rejection is based on a student’s failure to

meet the necessary criteria for their chosen visa category.

Cancellation Policy

Buckswood Overseas Summer School defines cancellation as the period prior to the start of the course. All cancellations must be made in

writing to the Summer School Administrator. The following refund policy applies:

Where cancellations are received in writing more than 14 days before the course start date, any fees minus the deposit and airport

transfers will be refunded. Where cancellations are received in writing 14 days or less prior to the start of the course, 30% of the fees,

the deposit and airport transfers will not be refunded.

Withdrawal Policy

Buckswood Overseas Summer School defines withdrawal as termination of the course after the course has started. Any withdrawal must

be made in writing to the Summer School Administrator. No refund will be given if a decision is made to withdraw from the course after

the course start date.

Visas

Some students require a student visa or a tourist visa. Students should contact their local Embassy, Consulate or High Commission to

ensure that they are allowed to enter and study in their chosen country. Arranging the correct visa is the sole responsibility of the

student or agent. No visa support documentation will be provided until all fees have been received.

Accident and Medical Insurance

Student travel insurance is NOT included in our package price. We therefore recommend that individual travel insurance policies are

taken out by parents or the agency with who the student is booking.

Medication Policy

There are an increasing number of students bringing their own medication to Buckswood Overseas Summer School. Unless the

medication is for a specific ailment that we are informed of on the booking form, this is completely unacceptable and can be extremely

dangerous. No medication, unless prescribed for a diagnosed illness or ailment and stated clearly on the booking form may be brought

onto the Buckswood School premises. This includes Group Leaders. Any medication that is brought onto the school premises must be

declared and handed to the Summer School Director for safekeeping.

Liability

Buckswood Overseas Summer School, its staff and representatives will not be liable for loss, damage or injury to persons or property

howsoever caused except where liability is expressly imposed by the law. Buckswood Overseas Summer School will not be liable in the

event that any service contracted to be supplied by Buckswood Overseas Summer School becomes impossible to supply for any reason

or any cause outside of our control.

Arrival and Departure Times

If no transfer is required and a student is using alternative travel methods to arrive at school, i.e. the parent/guardian is bringing the

student to school, please note that check-in time is after 13:00 on the Sunday of arrival. On departure day (Saturday of departure),

parents/guardians may collect students from 10:00 to 13:30.

Specific Accommodation Requests

Where ever possible, Buckswood Overseas Summer School will endeavour to meet specific accommodation requests. However, this may

not always be possible so we recommend that students pre-book accommodation in order to avoid disappointment. Any specific

Page 22: Spring and Summer programmes for 8 to 17 year olds...Courses Spring Course: 29th March to 18th April 2020 Summer School: 28th June to 15th August 2020 BOSS courses, for students aged

accommodation requests, e.g. single or en suite rooms, sharing with friends, etc. will incur a supplementary charge of £125 per week. If

this supplementary charge has not been paid, then we cannot guarantee that specific requests will be met.

No specific accommodation requests are guaranteed unless the £125 specific room request fee has been paid. Typically, students aged 8

to 12 may be housed in rooms with up to 3 other students and students aged 13 to 17 may be accommodated with up to 2 more

students. We also have a limited number of single rooms which may be used. Also, we do not have en suite rooms for students aged 8 to

11 although the nearest bathroom is never more than a 10 second walk from any bedroom.

Suspension and Expulsion

The school reserves the right to suspend and/or expel, without notice, any pupil whose conduct, in the opinion of the Summer School

Director, becomes unacceptable for whatever reason. Fees for the remainder of the course will be forfeited and deposits will only be

returned after the deduction of expenses. The parent/guardian must then cover any expenses incurred in returning a pupil to his/her

place of home.

Drugs and Alcohol Abuse

Buckswood Overseas Summer School has a strict no drugs or alcohol policy and the school reserves the right to undertake random

testing for the use of drugs and alcohol. Any positive result will be assessed at the discretion of the Director or Centre Manager who may

suspend or expel the pupil concerned.

Travel

Buckswood Overseas Summer School is not responsible for any flights, trains or any other means of travel entering the United Kingdom.

All travel must be booked in accordance with availability and availability must be checked with the Summer School Registrar before any

travel commitments are made.

Extra Night

There is a supplementary charge of £140 for any extra nights.

Exams

The minimum length of stay in order to sit an exam is 2 weeks. Please note that it can take up to 8 weeks after the exam for us to receive

the certificates from the exam board.

Lost Property

We cannot be held responsible for items lost by students. Upon arrival, students are offered the opportunity to deposit any valuables

with our staff for safe keeping and can have access to these belongings as and when necessary. Any belongings which students remain in

possession of are their own responsibility and although we will try our best to source any lost property, we cannot be held liable for

these items. Any property that is found once the owner has left the school will incur a postage and packaging charge should the owner

wish for it to be returned and we therefore advise that all property is labelled with the student’s name.

Booking Confirmation

We advise that availability is checked with us directly before any booking process begins. No booking is confirmed until a booking form

has been completed and a £250 non-refundable deposit has been paid.

Semi-Supervised Time

It must be understood that students aged 13 to 17 may be given ‘semi-supervised’ time during some excursions. Semi-supervised time is

when these students are given a set amount of free time to explore a set area, for example, a museum or a shopping area. These

students are only allowed to participate in this free time if they are wearing their wristband which contains our emergency phone

number, we have their phone number and they are in groups of two or more. During this semi-supervised time, a meeting point that is

constantly occupied by a member of staff will be established while other members of staff patrol the set area. Students aged 12 and

under are supervised 100% of the time. If you do not wish for your child to be left unsupervised, please let us know.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact us.
