+GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT

+Why did you choose KU for your degree? I heard great things about Keiser and I really loved the structure of one class a month. +Did you belong to any organizations as a student at Keiser? Member of the Keiser Ambassador program, Vice President Student Government Association, and Phi Theta Kappa. +Why do you feel it's important to be involved in extracurricular activities on campus? It’s important to be a part of the team and family of Keiser. I like to help others and teach. Coming in as a new student I had many questions for what to expect and I like to contribute to other new and current students with any knowledge that helps. Myself and many other students at Keiser participated in the breast cancer awareness walk promoting Keiser University.

+What strengths did you bring to classrooms? The school? Having some familiarization in the medical field I was able to have a stronger grasp on my studies and always eager to share stories and experiences with my fellow classmates. +What are you long term career goals? I plan to continue my education at Keiser in bachelors' program and possibly one day return to Keiser as a Radiologic Technologist instructor. +What did you like most about being a student at Keiser U? Keiser has been a great school with all friendly staff and faculty. Every morning Jon at the front desk greeted me with a friendly “good morning.” Patricia Velasquez was amazing in helping with financial aid and of course Jen was awesome to have in student services dropping at a dime to help with any needs. I could not have asked for better instructors in my program. Hands down the best instructors and molded me into a successful student and future tech. Abby in the library is always eager to assist and help. +What advice do you have to current and incoming students? Advice to current and incoming students would be don’t hesitate to ask questions to your instructors and classmates and don’t be afraid to answer questions in class, even if you’re wrong it’s the best way to learn.

Dr. Doire is a recent online Doctorial graduate, and instructor in our Nursing Program. With her knowledge as an online student herself, and now

as an instructor teaching online here are some tips she has found to be beneficial!

+1 – Daily check your emailsand Blackboard for any updatedmessages from your teachersand Student Services!+2 - Any question is importantso ASK your instructor toclarify!+3 – Find a “calendar” systemthat works for you.

Desktop/ laptop calendars are great. Enter when assignments are due, and you will be notified by a pop-up. I always set them a week ahead, then changed it to 3 days ahead, then 1 day to finish for example.

Phone calendar apps! Schedule your classes and assignments with alerts.

Paper calendars on your desk at home. Hint: mark your classes in different colors and highlight assignment due dates!

+ Find a system or two thatworks for you. Every night writedown what needs to beaccomplished the following day.Don’t forget to schedule breaksto avoid being overwhelmed.

+Your instructors are alwaysthere for you and utilize theircommunication systems byemail, ZOOM, web links andtexts.

+What’s Been Happening On Campus?

What +EASE Means to Me + In February, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, students attending private universities across Florida headed to the Tallahassee to let their voices be heard regarding the Effective Access to Student Education (EASE) grant being cut. This grant provides students like me that are resident of Florida attending a non-profit college or university tuition assistance of $2,841 which the state wanted to decrease. It was both a humbling and gratifying experience to date.

Students of the Sarasota campus met up at 6 am on Wednesday, February 26. 2020, to ride on a bus for the over five-hour journey to our capitol. There were four classmates of mine in the cohort T3 of the traditional BSN program on this journey. However, I found it to be meaningful that there were other cohorts of the Nursing program, Radiology program, along with other students getting their degrees in Psychology. The point is during this ride I was able to meet and talk with other students from other programs within our university that otherwise I would never had talk to, and I have made lasting friendships with some. At the capitol we met not only students from other Keiser campuses, but students from other colleges and universities across Florida. We met Belinda Keiser, Vice Chancellor of Community Relations and Student Advancement for Keiser University. Dr. Morgan, our Campus President introduced us to a few representatives, and I was in awe of how fired up other students like myself were. We had placards voicing to save the grant and we chanted to save the grant intermittently. It was a sight to behold and hear. After several representatives spoke, and we were told the grant was not being cut, a chorus of voices shouted in unison. What an experience to know the system works. I am proud to be affiliated with an institution that has my interest at heart. To have senior faculty, staff as well as fellow students taking the time from their regular schedule to attend a process such as this was inspiring.

Later we got to see our government at work passing bills, three to be exact in the House of Representatives. The Senate was closed and was scheduled to open at 3 pm. Dr. Morgan knew many representatives and I asked her why, which she stated simply “it was her job to work for her students.” I am sure the students represented Keiser University well and I was proud to be there. If ever there were another rally, KU can count on me.

+ For those that do not know what is an Esports team?An Esports team is simply, a team that competes in competitivegaming. Our Keiser Esports team competes at the collegiatelevel against other varsity programs across the nation such asFSU, Perdue, and University of California Irvine. However, anesports team is more than just it's players, it’s also contentproducers, broadcast talent, and steamers who work hard tomake sure the team is as visible and successful as possible.+ How did you get involved with Esports?I originally started playing amateur tournaments, on thePlaystation 3 all the way back in my sophomore year of highschool. By the time I was a Junior at UCF, I had been playingLeague of Legends for years and played on the University ofCentral Florida esports club team. After graduating I realizedthat my skills and experience, I garnered over the years couldland me a career position in the burgeoning esports scene. Atthat point I began to try out for various professional teams as acoach, and eventually become the head coach of a pro amorganization recruiting the top players in League of Legends.+What made you want to start the team in Sarasota? When I began looking to take the next step in my coaching career, I noticed that some universities had begun to build their own varsity programs and needed esports professionals to lead their programs. Seeing as how my first foray into competitive esports was during my own time at University, it made sense to look into a leadership role in the collegiate scene, and I’m very happy that I did. I'm am very lucky to have a President and Director of Admissions that aim highly for their athletics team and support my endeavors for this team to the fullest. +What should interested students do to prepare for tryouts?

If your game has a ranked queue, play it as much as possible. Once you've placed somewhere on the ladder, we'll have a good startingpoint to see where your skills are and what you can bring to the team.If you're passionate about esports or gaming in general, the best thing you can do is connect with me.+What are your goals for the team?My goal will always be for Keiser Sarasota to become the number one esports program, first in Florida, then nationwide. To do that, wehave to dominate the esports scene in both our tournament placing and in our content creation. My other major goal is to create a system that encourages growth and player development, not just among our esports student athletes, but also for high school esports athletes who aspire to take the next step in their player careers.+When can we expect tryout information?Reach out to me via email: [email protected], also come join our schools discord server;https://discord.gg/RcM5HTB to connect with myself and your fellow esports players.+Anything else you would like campus to know? The esports scene is not just made of the players, it’s also the support staff that broadcast the games, the vloggers and socialmedia correspondents who produce content around games and their results, and of course the fans and fellow Seahawks whocheer on our team.

Keiser University Sarasota Nursing Department donated masks, gowns, and gloves (PPE) to some of our community partners in an effort to help those on the front lines of the covid-19 pandemic.

“My volunteer organization the Manasota Reserve Corp is a joint effort of Sarasota and Manatee counties under the direction of the Health Department. The Health Department did drive-thru testing at the Manatee Convention center for 4 days and I helped out on Saturday. They had about 50 patients coming through each of those days, by appointment only with heavy police presence to keep things orderly. The event was a success, we were pretty safe with use of full PPE (proximity gown, gloves, face shield, and N95 masks).”

+ What made you want to become a nurse?I knew I wanted to be a nurse since I was 10 years oldafter sustaining a minor laceration to my leg and then avisit to an ER, I had to be an ER nurse and I did.

+ Favorite part about working at KU?The people I work with, flexibility of my schedule, andsupport from Leaders.

+What is your favorite thing about our students? The passion for wanting to be a nurse and readiness tolearn.

+What are some of the alternative ways you are teachingyour students remotely –and how did you come up withthem?Engaging each student is a must because they can joinyou and walk away from the computer. So, I choose toinvolve them, I often call upon various students toparticipate in a team. I think out of the box and not onlydo I come up with ideas, I read what Dean Brewer sendsout and read what the National Council of the State Boardof Nursing and National League for Nursing suggests.

+What suggestions/advice do you have for fellow facultyabout keeping your students engaged remotely?Involve them, place them into group sessions. Keep itlively, make it fun and make it a learning experience.Show them you are happy, when faculty are happy, theymore likely than not will follow you. It is infectious.Students watch us, we are on stage, be the best you can.Pretend you are running for an Academy award, becompetitive, expect more.

Quick Facts + Department: Associate Nursing Program+ Years at KU: 4+ Years in the Healthcare Industry: 39

+ What suggestions/advice do you have for students tostay engaged while learning remotely?

In order to collect all the eggs in your basket, you must participate. If you do not participate, you get no eggs. Just remember, there is the NCLEX exam waiting for you, and you need this information to pass. Participation is non-negotiable.

+ What are you most looking forward to upon our returnto campus?Normalcy, fun, my colleagues, all the things that perhaps Idid not appreciate before, I do now.

+ FUN FACTWhen I was 13, my girlfriend talked me into sneaking into the Astor Towers Hotel in Chicago. That’s because I wanted to see The Monkeys, and she wanted to see, Paul Revere and the Raiders. We got into the elevator and we were riding up to the Penthouse with Mick Jagar, I had a red leather autograph book and my Polaroid swinger camera, and I got his autograph and a picture, plus one of Johnny Rivers in his bathrobe. We left and I never got to see the Monkeys and was terribly disappointed. At that time, I could have cared less for Mick Jagar, because he had such big red lips. Wished I had that picture and my autograph book today.

First time seeking therapy? Use this summary of provider titles

“Therapist” is an umbrella term for licensed mental health professionals such as counselors, social workers, and psychoanalysts. Each licensed therapist has a degree from an accredited institution.

On META, you’re likely to find licensed therapists with titles below.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental illness. He or she is licensed to write prescriptions. Psychiatrists have M.D. in their title.

Psychologists can provide counseling and psychotherapy, psychological testing, and can provide treatment for mental disorders. Psychologists may have PhD or PsyD in their title.

Social Workers are able to evaluate and treat mental illnesses through psychotherapy. They can also provide case management and hospital discharge planning. Licensed social workers will have acronyms with “SW” in their titles such as LCSW, LMSW, and LICSW depending on the state where they received their certification.

Professional Counselors are qualified to evaluate and treat mental problems by providing counseling or psychotherapy. Licensed professional counselors will have acronyms with “C” in their titles such as LMHC, MHC, LPC, LCPC depending on the state certification.

The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced many people to seek therapy for the first time. While META allows users to choose their own provider, it can be confusing with such a variety of licensed professionals on the platform. META uses the terms "counselor" and "provider" interchangeably. They are both a catchall term for people who have been professionally trained to listen and treat people.

Sometimes called “therapists," there are multiple types of providers available on META with different degrees. All of whom are trained to help you cope with the stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues brought on by the shelter-at-home order.

Other types of licenses may appear; the list above is not comprehensive. However, all therapists on META are licensed to help you.
