MD 113 Weekend Postponed

The weekend originally scheduled for April 19 thru 22 at the Claggett Center near Buckeystown, MD has been postponed. MD 113 will now be held on November 8 – 11, 2018. David Richardson will be the Rector of the rescheduled MD-113.

The postponement gives people more time to submit applications, so please pray on serving or sponsoring new Curisstas.

WINTER RELIEF

We are pleased to announce that the Coordinator team for Winter Relief 2018 will be Jim Backoff, Terry McLean and Danny Prince. Please give them your help and cooperation for this vital mission. A coordinating meeting for the 2018 session is planned for April 24th. A brief meal will be shared at 6:30 followed by the meeting at 7:00 pm.

This class will be repeated on those same Wednesday evenings at 7:00 P.M. for those who prefer that time. Thursday May 10th Ascension of Christ

What is the meaning of Ascension Day? Ascension Day is the 40th day of Easter. It occurs 39 days after Easter Sunday. It is a Christian holiday that commemorates Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven according to Christian belief. Ascension Day marks the 40th day after Jesus Christ's resurrection according to Christian belief. Why is Ascension Day on a Thursday? It is believed that on the 40th day he took them to the Mount of Olives, where they watched as he ascended to heaven. Ascension Day marks the end of the Easter season and occurs ten days before Pentecost. Depending upon the phases of the Moon in a particular year, Ascension Day is usually celebrated on a Thursday. What does the Bible say about the ascension of Christ? The Bible describes the ascension of Christ in a scene told both by Luke and by Mark. The scene portrays meaning to the believer and is supported by other Scripture, as well. It is really a very poignant picture when you think upon its meanings. The ascension communicates Christ's glorification. Jesus' work here was done. Mark says, "After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God" (Mark 16:19). The scene communicates that He was leaving earth in His bodily form and that He was going to His former place of glory, having won victory over death (John 17:5). Jesus' ascension brought to an end the time of His ministry as God in man. And it began the time of His ministry as God in man, the church. God would minister through His Word and His ministers in the church. The church is Christ's body in the earth (Ephesians 5:30; 4:15-16). The ascension forms the point of continuity between "all that He began to do and to teach (Acts 1:1), and what the apostles and the church continued to do and to teach after His departure.

Another essential truth concerning Christ's ascension is that He ascended on High with His own blood to make atonement for the sins of men (Hebrews 2:17). As High Priest forever, He went before the eternal mercy seat - as the Old Testament High Priest went into the Holy of Holies once a year to make atonement for the sins of Israel - Jesus made atonement once and for all in the tabernacle not man-made (Hebrews 9:11-12). Having obtained eternal redemption for all who would believe in Him, He sat down in His glory. He took His place as supreme authority, whose throne we may now approach "with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and grace to help in our time of need" (Hebrews 4:16). A new covenant has been ratified between God and man, sealed by the blood of a righteous man, God's own Lamb. His ascension meant that He would send the Holy Spirit to dwell in believers, taking the place of His bodily presence, and continuing what He had done while here (John 14:16-17; 16:5-7). "All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you" (John 14:25-26). And, "He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you" (John 16:14). Jesus lives in believers by God's Spirit and continues His work in them and through them. His disappearance into the clouds bore also the promise of Christ's return. Luke reports in Acts1:11: "'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.'" Paul explains in I Thessalonians 4:16-17 that "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever."


This prophesied event, commonly known as the rapture, lets us know that our bodies, also, will be changed to be "like His glorious body" (Philippians 3:21). Meanwhile, we look for His appearing conforming our lives to His example, so that, "we shall be like Him" at His coming. "Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure" (1 John 3:3). He intercedes for believers in His present ministry as High Priest and is able to save us completely (Hebrews 7:25). He is the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him (Hebrews 5:9). The ascension assures of His return because He said: "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am" (John 14:3).

MARTYRS OF THE SUDANS

The Christian bishops, chiefs, commanders, clergy and people of Sudan declared, on May 16, 1983, that they would not abandon God as God had revealed himself to them under threat of Shariah Law imposed by the fundamentalist Islamic government in Khartoum. Until a peace treaty was signed on January 9, 2005, the Episcopal Church of the Province of the Sudan suffered from persecution and devastation through twenty-two years of civil war. Two and a half million people were killed, half of whom were members of this church. Many clergy and lay leaders were singled out because of their religious leadership in their communities. No buildings, including churches and schools, are left standing in an area the size of Alaska. Four million people are internally displaced, and a million are scattered around Africa and beyond in the Sudanese Diaspora. Twenty-two of the twenty-four dioceses exist in exile in Uganda or Kenya, and the majority of the clergy are unpaid. Only 5% of the population of Southern Sudan was Christian in 1983. Today over 85% of that region of six million is now mostly Episcopalian or Roman Catholic. A faith rooted deeply in the mercy of God has renewed their spirits through out the years of strife and sorrow.

PRAYER - O God, steadfast in the midst of persecution, by your providence the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church: As the martyrs of the Sudan refused to abandon Christ even in the face of torture and death, and so by their sacrifice brought forth a plentiful harvest, may we, too, be steadfast in our faith in Jesus Christ; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

ENMEGAHBOWH PRIEST AND MISSIONARY

12 JUNE

Enmegabowh was the first Native American ordained in the Episcopal Church. He was born on the north shore of Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada, and was a member of the Chippewa (Ojibwe) Nation. His name means "one-who-stands-before-his-people." After he was baptized by a Methodist preacher he took the name John Johnson. Some time before 1850 he was given a Prayer Book. Through the influence of James Lloyd Breck he became a candidate for ordination in the Episcopal Church. He was ordained deacon on July 3, 1859, and priest on June 2, 1867. Enmegahbowh and Bishop Henry Benjamin Whipple of Minnesota worked together among the Indians until Enmegahbowh's death at White Earth, Minnesota.

PRAYER - Almighty God, you led your pilgrim people of old with fire and cloud; grant that the ministers of your church, following the example of blessed Enmegahbowh, may stand before your holy people, leading them with fiery zeal and gentle humility. This we ask through Jesus, the Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.

Notes From Our Senior Warden

Each week we pray that the Lord may bring us a shepherd to guild us in the coming years. Our Vestry is working diligently to bring that shepherd to St. Andrew’s. They have, through no fault of their own, been unsuccessful. But you know, sometimes doors close because we are not supposed to go through them. St. Andrew’s requires a special person to watch over us; the Bishop knows this and is working with the vestry to achieve that end. A recent candidate, who felt they were not a good fit for St. Andrew’s, offered the following words:

“I came away from our conversation earlier this month with several things that impressed me about St. Andrew's: respect for the honesty, integrity and genuineness that I experienced from You and Every member of the Vestry; a deep sense of your love for each other, your sense of being a community and family, and your commitment as the Body of Christ. I heard a strong devotion to Episcopal identity and liturgy and a desire to flourish in every possible way in the seasons ahead. I loved the worship space and hearing about the rich ministries currently in place as well as those from the past. I think the physical plant is also a strength in its attractiveness and in functionality. I salute the many virtues and blessings that I experienced in our time together and I also appreciated the illumination of our varied and contrasting faith principles and stories.”

People recognize the nature of our family and eventually there will be someone who is the right good shepherd; until then we will remain patient and faithful and continue to pray for our shepherd.
