When I was a kid, I watched Get Smart all the time. The TV show’s hero, Maxwell Smart, was the bumbling secret agent with the cool gadgets of his profession including a shoe phone. Having wearable tech was hilarious at the time, now it has arrived. Each one of us can shop, text, track our fitness, and experience virtual reality and we don’t have to talk into our shoe to do it. But learning how to use all this technology can be overwhelming. We can help with that.

This spring, say hello to Lynda!

With your Idea Exchange membership card you can now access this collection of 3500+ online courses for free. Learn how to create designs for a 3D printer, make a podcast, develop software and so much more. You can access over 140,000 top quality video tutorials in business, technology and creative skills taught by industry experts. Thanks to the Lynda.com e-learning library, none of us will ever again have to say, “Missed it by that much”.

One of the most fascinating features of the Old Post Office is the historic clock which has been keeping watch over Galt’s core for the past 100 years. Designed and manufactured by J. Smith and Sons, the stately clock was installed in 1915. Over the years, the building has seen many changes and renovations, but the clock has remained untouched. As the City of Cambridge works to renovate the building, restoring the clock has been a top priority.

Achim Klaas, owner of Klaas Design, is a local artist and designer of international reputation, who has run his business just outside of Cambridge for the past 35 years. His passion is in capturing the history and story of projects, and he works diligently to create art that will resonate with young and old alike. Achim’s primary work has been in religious commissions, but his keen interest in the technical aspects of restoration work made him the perfect choice to restore the clock’s faces.

However, this project was not for the faint of heart. The clock has four faces that were all in various states of disrepair. Each face is about 6.5 feet in diameter, and made up of 24 separate

PUTTING OUR BEST FACE FORWARD

pieces of glass. Some faces had salvageable but tarnished glass, while others needed their glass completely replaced. Achim and his team numbered each piece as they removed it from the cast iron frame, in order to ensure they put everything back in the correct spot. Wonderfully enough the cast iron frame, while weathered, was completely unbroken. Achim did not need to do repair work, instead focusing on restoring the iron by sandblasting, and then repainting each individual section with historical accuracy.

The clock is only one piece of the amazing Old Post Office restoration. Thank you to Achim and his team for their wonderful work restoring the faces of the clock!

Lynda.com is a leading online learning platform that offers courses in technology, software, business, and creative skills, allowing anyone to further their learning in order to achieve personal or professional goals. Instead of paying for a subscription, Idea Exchange members can now take any courses they’d like for free, just by using their membership card to subscribe.

Chris Martin has been using Lynda.com for over five years, for both personal and professional learning opportunities. While employed at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Chris used

Lynda.com as part of the staff training for the college’s IT Department. He found the platform incredibly helpful. Since the world of information technology is constantly changing, effective employees must work to keep up with new software and infrastructure. Chris shared, “in an ever-changing industry, Lynda.com has dynamic training material,” which allows professionals to continually upgrade their skills, and retain a broad overview of their industry and important developments that may be taking place.

Idea Exchange is thrilled that Chris is now using his skills in our own Digital Services Department, and it’s inspiring to hear how he has found success with Lynda.com. Personally, he has used the platform to sharpen his skills in photo and sound editing, and particularly enjoyed the “Learning Studio One” course.

“Volunteering at Idea Exchange makes me feel useful to my community and empowers me to be more confident in life.” – Maria Bolhuis

Whether we were born here or chose to make Canada our home, we all need to feel a sense of belonging, and belonging starts with knowing our neighbours. For newcomers, making these connections can be difficult. Between cultural and language barriers and the unfamiliarity of our systems, resources and opportunities to participate, getting settled can be an uphill battle.

Who better to help welcome those new to our community than the folks that have already made that climb and come out on top? With that in mind we’ve reached out to some of the more settled newcomers from Idea Exchange’s volunteer team and asked them, “How can we help? What can we do to empower our new neighbours and welcome them to town? Do you want to be involved?” As expected, this strong and adventurous group has responded – and then some!

Introducing our Newcomer Focus Group. This committee of dedicated volunteers will work together to discover ways of helping newcomers to Cambridge get to know their new home, meet their neighbours, and build the kind of bonds that make our community stronger.

Are you a newcomer interested in joining our Newcomer Focus Group? Contact [email protected]

The title is both a nod to our upcoming project Transformed Through Touch and a reference to the single most important component of our work – trust.

Whether we are curating and mounting exhibitions, carrying out the work of grant applications, developing projects with seniors facing physical and social challenges, sharing issues of Indigenous rights and cultures, or working with the deaf/blind community to change our understanding of the arts as a single-sense visual medium, the success of each and every one of these efforts is measured by the kinds of relationships we can build and the level of trust we can earn.

Last November we made an unprecedented move, placing our entire fibre art collection in a single gallery space for public feedback and debate. In a show of trust, we offered our community the chance to tell us what they think about the collection and to more deeply explore the challenges and opportunities of public art collecting. This enriched our staff, enabled our public, and was key to providing us with the

March Break Hours:Monday, March 12 - Friday, March 16: 10:00am - 12:00pm, 1:00 - 3:00pm, 5:00 - 7:00pm.

Transformed Through Touch is a collaborative project between the deaf/blind community and artists Gareth Lichty, Gary Kirkham, and Meghan Sims. Inspired by a series of creative experiences with artists from the W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind and the Canadian Deafblind Association Ontario Chapter, this project has culminated in an immersive, multisensory public art installation.

impetus for transforming our goals in the future.

In January this year we completed a remarkable film, The Legacy Project, through our collaboration with artists Gary Kirkham and Dwight Storring and partners Chartwell Queens Square Retirement Residence, Stirling Heights Long Term Care Home, and The Gleaners. The film follows seniors as they share in the rituals and acts of harvesting, cooking, and drum-making. This documentary film not only changed the lives of seniors involved in it, but it changed us. It sensitized us, ignited new conversations, and transformed perceptions of what it means to be a senior.

Learning and earning trust. These are at the heart of our mission as we look ahead to ambitious projects and exhibitions in spring 2018 and it is with pride and determination that we reflect on the ways that we have been, and will continue to be, transformed by trust.

PROJECTS REVIEW 2018April 16 – June 2, 2018Design at Riverside GalleryOpening: Monday, April 16, 6:30pm

An annual exhibition featuring graduate and undergraduate projects from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. The exhibition showcases the creativity, craft and commitment to architectural excellence reflecting the internationally recognized qualities of the school. Undergraduate projects are immersed in a full range of contemporary issues that span from the poetics of building to the sustainability of urban precincts. Graduate projects are distinguished by self-directed thesis work that examines the ever-changing cultural, digital, poetic, and political conditions confronting architectural practice in the 21st century.

April 20 – June 30, 2018 Queen’s Square Gallery Opening: Friday, April 20, 7:00pm

The raft is like a theatrical stage, the life of an individual, coming apart as the great serpent that was holding it together finally lets go of his own tail, untying its knotted body as he leaves. The monster is the lifeline as it comes undone, the stage of life dissolving as the birds of Paradise depart.

DaveandJenn, also sometimes, maybe, known as David John Foy and Jennifer Saleik, have been working together since 2004. Based in Calgary, their varied practice weaves a long view of both human and natural histories together with the more closed off realms of private spectacles and inner landscapes. In their sculptural works animals, or rather animal hybrids, take up centre stage. This ill-formed paradise is not a natural one. It is set against a background of uncertainties, wonderment and confusion that comes from living in the real world.

XVK (or 三喜), is an Asian-pop-girl-band-artist-trio of members Xuan Ye, Véronique Sunatori and Sara Kay Maston.

On June 13, 2017, the group premiered with their single “Cute Cute Manifesto Manifesto”, which peaked inside the top ten on the pineapple charts. After releasing their first single, XVK made its major debut on July 22, 2017 delighting hundreds when they showed up on stage at Toronto’s Big On Bloor festival to perform a surprise concert.

For their first television debut, XVK appeared on the Y+XVK=<3 talk show hosted by Tiffany Schofield at renowned Y+ Contemporary, just north east of Toronto.

The stars of the pop group recently released a new range of cheeky stickers, buttons, and jewelry as part of their online collection. Though it’s still early days for XVK’s merch line, the sell-out ‘Triple Happiness’ Necklaces have seen their estimated net worth double since last year prompting the band to venture into cryptocurrency -- XVKcoin!

Their new single ╰(*8:8:8*)╯♡ , in correspondence with their upcoming touring debut in Cambridge, Ontario, is set for release on May 11, 2018.
