ZACK BARRETT APPEAL LIBRARY AWARD LOW FOLD DECISION this issue YOUR Village needs YOUR views! NEWS Your FREE MAGAZINE for Kirkheaton, Upper Heaton, Gawthorpe, Bog Green, Briggate, Houses Hill, Wellhouse & Lascelles Hall ISSUE 17 SPRING 2017 A message from Kirkheaton Future - the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group: By now many of you* will have completed a questionnaire which will provide the evidence needed to prepare the Kirkheaton Neighbourhood Plan [due to be presented to Kirklees Council later in the year]. Please complete it if you haven’t already done so. Kirkheaton Future has already conducted a number of consultations, including two workshops at the Community Centre and an excellent one with pupils at the primary school. We have also made a detailed land use survey of the Plan area, mapping housing, businesses, open spaces, etc In order to produce a plan approved by Kirklees Council and the Government, we must demonstrate that it represents the wishes of the majority of Kirkheaton residents and businesses. This is why we need as many people as possible to express their views through a completed questionnaire, either on-line at elesurvey.co.uk/f/614077/1588/ or via a paper copy. The deadline for on- line completion is Monday 6th March. Why do we need a Neighbourhood Plan? The draft Kirklees Local Development Plan proposes to allocate an additional 298 homes to be built in Kirkheaton over the next 20 years. The Neighbourhood Plan is essential as it will allow us to help shape the future of our village: how many new houses, the type of houses, where they are located and when they are to be built. It will also deal with other important topics such as traffic management, service provision [schools, health facilities and shops] and the improvement of the natural and built environment. By producing a Neighbourhood Plan we can attract the sort of development we want rather than having unwanted development imposed on us, and the Plan will be a legal document that cannot be ignored. Most importantly, the Neighbourhood Plan will provide a detailed strategy for our village that aims at making Kirkheaton a place in which we and our children want to live, now and in the future. This aim is worth fighting for, and the Neighbourhood Plan is the best way of achieving what we want. Please help to secure our collective future. *The questionnaire has only been delivered to the 1600 houses and businesses in the neighbourhood Plan area agreed by Kirklees Council in 2016.

We are sad to report that there has been a number of incidents of vandalism in the village. Over the last few months planters have been either overturned or plants pulled out mainly

around the Community Centre or along New Road. Please be alert and inform our community support officer Bryan Clarkson if you can help in any way. [email protected] or call 101.

Freda Trigg 1931-2016One of the stalwarts of Kirkheaton, Freda Trigg, nee Hirst, died in late 2016 after a relatively short illness. Freda spent most of her life in the village. She went to ‘the big school’- now demolished, and started work at the local blacksmith‘s (on the site of Kirkheaton Engineering) as a 14 year old. Later she went into the WRAC where she met her husband, John. They spent a number of years abroad with the army and then returned to Kirkheaton.Freda was well known by many people. Some more senior villagers will have known her as a child - she lived at the Post Office owned and run by her parents, and told many a tale of life there. How her Mum had to sit under the stairs to answer the telephone to write down telegram messages and how the local boys used to queue up after school in the hope of earning sixpence [2½p] by delivering the same telegrams to far flung places such as Lascelles Hall and Upper Heaton!Other people will remember her as an insurance agent collecting her weekly dues and more recently as an indefatigable supporter of Kirkwood Hospice. She was secretary of the local support group for many years and gave her time and energy to the Hospice after her husband died there. She also was an amazing source of local history knowledge about life in the mid twentieth century in Kirkheaton. She had stories to tell of the fierce lady who oversaw the drapery department of Field Head Coop, of the goings on in the Anderson shelter in the rectory grounds during school air raid practice in WW2 and many more. She will be greatly missed by many of us.

In the early part of the 19th century the local population had lived through dark times. The price of food and other necessities for hand loom weavers was very high. Child labour was extensive and poverty prevailed. Workers started to band together to try to help themselves. From 1824 to 1840 there was much activity and many co-operative societies were set up in the Huddersfield area. Most failed but four still existed in 1910 including those set up in Kirkheaton.Fieldhead on Bankfield Lane was the first of the two societies formed in this village. It was established in 1834, (ten years before The Rochdale Pioneers) by co-founders David Dawson and Joseph Roebuck with capital raised by ten local weavers. In the early days the store went under the name David Dawson & Co but later changed its name to “Fieldhead Co-operative Society Ltd.”. By 1912 it was known as Kirkheaton Co-operative & Industrial Society Ltd. The rules of the society were very simple - to distribute profits to members. It was well

known for producing a good “divi” or dividend. In 1839 Percival Senior (the 2 great-great-grandfather of David Senior) was appointed store manager, a position he held for 26 years. At the centenary in 1934 all members were given a pewter tea pot and a commemorative plaque was displayed in the store. The society’s fortunes later changed due to supermarket competition and it amalgamated with Heckmondwike before finally closing. The property is now owned by “Select and Save”. In spite of major alterations over the years it still retains many of the original 18th century features.

Bluebell WalkWe do live in a lovely area and soon [April/May] it is even more attractive with all the bluebells and wood anemones in flower. To enjoy these sights try one of these walks. There are two to choose from (on the maps the green triangle indicates the start, and the red triangle indicates the end, of the walk).Choice of less than 1 mile or 2 milesStart at Houses HillAt the bottom of Houses Hill on the bend in the road is a track going up left. Access to the track is through a kissing gate. Follow the track through the woods and at this time of year the ground is covered with a profusion of bluebells and white wood anemones. Continue up the track to a T junction. Here you can just turn around and retrace your footsteps [approx. 1 mile].If you would like a longer, circular walk [2 miles] continue readingAt the path junction turn right and walk along the track until it bends left. Here turn down right [sp] Continue down a much improved grassy track to Rod’s Beck. Lots of bluebells here among the trees. Cross the beck and go over a stile. Go diagonally left up the hill past a tree to a stile. Continue alongside a wall onto the road at Botany Bay. Here turn right and walk along the road until it bends left. Here take the footpath [sp] right and follow the signs through the fields to the farmhouse below. Continue along the track to the road and turn right to go back to the start. There is a longer circular walk [5½ miles] starting at the Beaumont Arms on the web site. Go to yettontogether.org and put ‘bluebell walk’ in the search box. Sp - signpost

Library Volunteers winners!Well done to Kirkheaton Library volunteers and Yetton Together at Kirklees Libraries Awards 2016 night held at Huddersfield Library in November.Lesley Finnegan was nominated for the Ambassador Award for all her hard work as a volunteer, children’s craft group organiser and much else. Jim, her husband was nominated for ‘The Unsung Hero’ Award for all his work behind the scenes keeping the library going. Trish Mellor, as representative of Yetton

Together, was nominated for the Community Award and Sue Bowyer was nominated for ‘The Pioneer’ award for establishing a number of activities in the library including the Lego club and Book group. Sadly none of them were winners but as Carol Stump, Head of Library Services, said at the ceremony - all the nominees are winners for all their outstanding work in the community to retain the library service despite the cuts. However, Kirkheaton Volunteers Group fought off stiff opposition from 9 other groups including Denby Dale, Kirkburton, Golcar and Marsden to win the Team Spirit award for all their hard work in establishing the library in its new home and running it. (there is only 5 hours of paid staff - the rest of the time the volunteers run the library) So CONGRATULATIONS to them all!

Over the last three years the Knit n Natter group based at Kirkheaton Community Centre, has been sending parcels of colourful knitted blankets and children’s jumpers etc to the island of Samos in Greece. Samos is in the front line of receiving desperate refugees fleeing from the ravages of war in Syria, who arrive with little more than what they stand up in. The parcels have been eagerly anticipated. As one British helper reports, ‘The parcels always seem to come when we most need

them - I recall one of their first packages came on the day when we were searching for blankets and warm clothes for the children who had arrived that afternoon.’One refugee, Sara, said that it wasn’t just that it was a beautiful jumper for her child, Evine [see photo] that made her happy but that it had been made with love by women she had never met but who cared what is happening to refugees like herself.

Zack’s appeal fund

Up to press, over £28000 has been raised to support the family of Kirkheaton youngster, Zack Barrett. Zack, 5 years old and identical twin to Leo, was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of brain tumour known as Diffuse Pontine Glioma in November and has only months to live. The community has rallied round to support them.Zack’s mum commented “Everyone has been so amazing in their support and fundraising so we can create wonderful memories and ease the financial pressure so we can spend our last moments with him.”

As trials to treat this form of cancer are in their earliest stages and aren’t yet available on the NHS, some of the money raised will be used to pay for him to take part in, and to support, research into this form of the disease. To donate go to gofundme.com/zack-barrett or support some of the many local fund raising events and activities.

Star Dome PlanetariumProfessional astronomer Martin Lunn MBE enthralled over 90 people from Kirkheaton with an exploration of the night sky, on a magical journey through the stars that can be seen throughout the year, and stories from the myths and legends of Ancient Greece. The special community event, organised by Yetton Together with grant funding support from Huddersfield Education Trust, was a sell-out, with tickets snapped up quickly. Also on hand was Kirkheaton’s own Robert Williams, Director of the Huddersfield Observatory, who will be familiar to the ‘Stargazers’ who have enjoyed previous events by YT.When the groups of excited adults (and children!) entered Kirkheaton Primary School on the evening of 31 January,

they were faced with a huge inflatable tent, the ‘Star Dome Planetarium’, filling a large space in the hall. Inside, once our eyes had got used to the dark, we could make out the projected specs of light representing the stars. During each 30 minute presentation, Martin spoke about the wonders of the night sky through the seasons, and told of the mythology behind the constellations, including stories about Orion, Andromeda and Perseus.

Low Fold footpath decisionAfter years of legal proceedings, the dispute regarding the blocked footpath between Stead Lane and Bankfield Lane has been resolved. An inquiry was held by the Planning Inspectorate in December 2016 and the decision was made that the footpath at Low Fold (see map) should be formally added to the records as a public right of way (PROW)Visit yettontogether.org to see the Inspector’s report.
