Trans group support network

The trans group continues to meet on a monthly basis offering friendship and support to those identifying as trans gender. We meet in a discreet and safe location for an informal discussion about issues important to the community. Please get in touch if you feel we can help in any way. It is also a supportive environment to explore the more personal side of feelings.

Care for the Carers (supporting Carers in East Sussex) have introduced a new LGBT carers group to help support members of the LGBT community in their caring role.

If you provide unpaid support to a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems, you are a carer. Our LGBT carers group meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month between 2-3.30. It’s a chance for you to spend time with other carers and share common interests and experiences and to receive information and advice. If you are interested in attending this group, please contact Sam Earwaker on 01323 738390 or just drop in. Address: Southwater Communi-ty Centre, 1 Stainsby Street, St Leonards on Sea, TN37 6LA . Starts 4th January 2017.

Our HRRA History Project collects LGBT life histories.

We are looking for volunteers to take part in this very important work.

Could you share some of your memories and experienc-es? Or could you help us with interviews and organising the project?

HRRA takes part in International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on 17th May by distributing information leaflets to help combat hate crime. Rother Council and Hastings Council fly the rainbow flag over their Town Halls for IDAHOBIT. The rainbow flag has been the symbol of LGBT pride since the 1970s. The colours reflect the diversity of the LGBT community.

Matt West, police hate crime co-ordinator

for East Sussex, spoke at HRRA’s AGM. He

urged LGBT people to come forward and

report hate crimes and he outlined some of

the initiatives that are being introduced

locally to encourage people to report hate

crimes. People are often reluctant to report

hate crimes for a variety of reasons. Matt

said that many people do not realise that

hate crimes include name-calling or graffiti

and he said that if an offender gets away

with these they may go on to commit other

crimes such as assault.

Another reason why people often do not want to report hate crime is because they do not want to go to court. Matt explained that hate crime victims do not have to give evidence in court. Sometimes people do not want to report hate crimes to the police and so Matt has provided training for Citizens Advice Offices and Rother Customer Services so that people can report there instead of to the police. There is also a smart phone app available where the victim can photograph the offender and give self-evidence. Marc, the hate crime co-ordinator at Hastings Voluntary Action, can provide support to victims of hate crime.

HRRA encourages all those experiencing hate

crime to report it. Those reporting can choose

whether they want the matter taken further or

noted to get a bigger picture. To report a hate

crime contact the police on 101, or contact

HRRA.

New HRRA ‘under the rainbow’ Facebook Group

HRRA have had a Facebook page (search for Hastings and Rother Rainbow Alliance on Facebook or find a link on the main website) for some time. We have now also set up a private Facebook Group, which is a private social space for HRRA members to chat, make new friends and get to know one another. We hope that members will use this space to socialise, talk about local events, collaborate in arranging new ones, chat about local issues (and not so local) as well as all other things LGBT. See the main HRRA Facebook page for the link to join.
