Tuesday, February 14 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Larry Downing MY CAREER WITH THE WHITE HOUSE PRESS CORPSRetired news photographer Larry Downing spent 38 years living in the Washington, D.C. area and was assigned to the White House Press Corps nearly all of that time. He started his career photographing

President Jimmy Carter in 1977 and finished up in 2015 assigned to coverage of President Barack Obama. He was a staff photographer with United Press International, Newsweek Magazine and Reuters. The White House News Photographers Association awarded him with a Lifetime Achievement Award during its annual gala in May 2015._____________________________________________Tuesday, February 21 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Dr. Nancy DukeFLORIDA: A STATE HISTORY BUILT ON SLAVERY Florida, one of the founding members of the Confederacy, had one of the largest slave populations among the southern states. Slavery in Florida began soon after the arrival of the Spanish in 1513, and played a far greater role in Florida’s history than anyone could ever imagine. From warriors and talented artisans to builders of cities, Africans played vital roles in shaping history.

WISE ProgramTuesday, February 28 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Prof. Samantha SternCREATIVE IMPROVISATIONPresented by the Daytona State Theatre Department, we will discuss this form of live theatre in which the plot, characters and dialogue of a game, scene or story are made up in the moment. Often improvisers will take a suggestion from the audience, or draw on some other source of inspiration, to get started. The “rules” of improv are applicable to real-life and real-world situations, encouraging team-building, leadership, quick thinking, risk-taking and creative freedom. Join us for a discussion and performance. You may even volunteer to try it yourself!_____________________________________________Tuesday, March 7 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Kim E. DolceINTRODUCTION TO GENEAOLOGYLearn tips on how to start climbing your family tree from the genealogy reference librarian for the Daytona Beach Regional Library. _____________________________________________Tuesday, March 21 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Dr. Thomas LoBasso DSC: STATE OF THE COLLEGE 2017 Dr. LoBasso, president of Daytona State College, will discuss his vision for the future of our local college and provide updates on various milestones, including construction projects such as the new soccer stadium and student center, as well as new programs and other initiatives to foster student success._____________________________________________Tuesday, March 28 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Prof. Timothy PintelloDRONES Drones are certainly in the news, but have you wondered exactly what they can do? Why are they the hottest electronic gadgets that you can get your hands on? Recent advances in technology have seen an increase in drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), in both military and civilian spheres. The technology used in drones is constantly evolving and we are seeing the use of these unmanned vehicles in wider areas.

Tuesday, April 4 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Prof. Emily D. Moore, MS, RDN, LD/NMEALS FOR THE MIND Join us as we discuss the latest research on the connection between the diet and the brain. Learn about the most beneficial foods and how to incorporate them into meaningful meals for the mind. Prof. Moore teaches Nutrition, Health and Wellness at Daytona State College._____________________________________________Tuesday, April 11 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Prof. Timothy PintelloCYBERSECURITY Do you have a smart phone? Do you use the Internet? Are you protected? Do you use technology? If your answer is yes to these questions, then you may be vulnerable to a cyber-attack. Network outages, hacking and computer viruses affect our lives in ways ranging from inconvenience to life-threatening. As we see an increased use of smartphones, digital applications and networks, we also see increased opportunities for exploitation. Know more about cybersecurity and learn how to protect yourself from the invisible. _____________________________________________Tuesday, April 18 - Bldg. 150, UCF Theater Dr. Nancy Duke WORLD WAR I: THE WAR TO END ALL WARS What was supposed to last four months and be over by Christmas dragged on for four years until 1918. This was the war that changed the world. It spawned two of the most significant events in the 20th century, events that would affect millions and change everyone’s life forever. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entrance into World War I, Florida has always paid tribute to and honored our country’s participation in that war. _____________________________________________Tuesday, April 25 - Bldg. 1200, Café 101 Chef Costa Magoulas IT’S ALMOST SUMMERTIME AGAIN.
