Thank you to the almost 400 donors who made a gift in 2016! Your gifts have enhanced the hospital and have positively impacted those we serve. If you haven’t visited the hospital lately, you will be surprised at how much we’ve changed. Your generous gifts helped underwrite the costs for the beautifully renovated patient and family waiting areas; complete with big screen TV’s, ample comfortable seating and relaxing spaces for families to gather.

In addition, the new registration rooms are private, the lab is state-of-the art and the rooms in the Emergency Department, Urgent Care and Day Surgery are all private with individual bathrooms. The rooms also all have new televisions. The Emergency Department had a new call light system installed. All of these improvements enhance both the patient and family experience. I encourage you to visit soon for a first-hand look at these and many other enhancements.

I hope you will join us on Thursday, May 11th as we celebrate the “official” opening of our newly renovated areas.

New Donor WallWhat else is new? Stoughton Hospital has a new Circle of

Friends Donor Wall. Donors to the LIFE.GIVING.CARE. The Donor Wall will include a video featuring several donors and volunteers who share their stories (see the video on our website at www.stoughtonhospital.com). Donors will be acknowledged by their cumulative lifetime giving.

My Stoughton Hospital Experience …by Dave VanDerHaegen

From pre surgery to post surgery the Stoughton Hospital Staff went above and beyond all expectations. Dr. Richard Rilling, Tara Shaw PAC and the rest of the medical team during my four hour surgery were awesome!

For three years of my life I endured congenital hip pain from a slight pain at first to full hip lock and high levels of pain at the end of the third year. The stress from the pain was slowly consuming me and limiting me in my life and from activities with my children, it was time I had to get my hip taken care of. Through the great personal care and guidance from the Stoughton Hospital staff I had a safe and healthy recovery.

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Rilling please call SSM Health Dean Medical Group - Stoughton (608) 877-2777.Insurances Accepted: DeanHealth Plan products, various commercialhealth insurances, Medicare Part B,Wisconsin Medicaid and others.

Please check with your individual health plan regarding covered services.

Stoughton Hospital made environmental changes and trained its staff to become a dementia friendly hospital. The hospital’s goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals affected by dementia. Individuals with dementia can become overwhelmed or agitated by the hospital environment of bright lights, unfamiliar areas, and strangers approaching them.

According to Heather Kleinbrook, Geriatric Psychiatry Manager, “we believe that people with dementia have the right to live well and engage in society to the best of their ability,” shares Kleinbrook. “By educating our staff, we can create a safe and supportive environment for those with dementia.”

Kleinbrook and her staff were inspired by the Dementia Capable Wisconsin initiative which acknowledges Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias are already straining Wisconsin’s long- term care system, and the number of people affected is expected to increase dramatically as the baby boom generation ages. The Dementia Capable Wisconsin mission is to provide appropriate, safe and cost-effective care throughout the course of the disease. One aspect of the initiative is to build dementia friendly communities and Kleinbrook shares, “hospitals are small communities in themselves similar to any small city or town and can be dementia friendly.”

Stoughton Dementia Friendly CoalitionOnce the hospital was dementia friendly, Kleinbrook took the

training to the Stoughton Community. From those efforts, the Stoughton Dementia Friendly Coalition was formed. The Coalition’s goal is to meet the unique needs of people in our community with dementia by increasing awareness and understanding, sharing information about local resources, offering educational opportunities, and training businesses and organizations to respond appropriately to the needs of those with dementia and their caregivers. As part of those efforts, the Coalition is organizing monthly talks to take place at both the hospital and library.

Dementia Friendly Coalition Community Classes All of these classes are free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
